Returning to Roosevelt, I find that the students have a unique respect for these areas of endeavor. Certainly our faculty and students are- keeping pace with our rapidly changing world and it is an inspiration to be a part of that effort. These words by Vice-Principal Frank Hana- walt clearly express his views of Roosevelt. Several years ago, he was a social studies teacher here, having received his degrees from the College of Puget Sound and the University of Washington. EecH F.BuHnck Returning to Roosevelt as principal and Seattle chairman of the committee investi- gating enriched classes, Mr. Cecil F. Bullock is encouraging high scholastic standards. National recognition was given to Roosevelt when it became one of the thirty-eight secondary schools with a large percentage of finalists in the National Merit Scholarship examinations. Mr. Bullock summarizes Roosevelt's growth: After six years' absence, I find Roosevelt healthy and thriving.- The search for knowledge, the respect for scholarship, and the development of responsible student leadership which brought distinction to our earlier years have all risen to new levels of achievement. It is characteristic of our Roosevelt way of life- 'The Strenuous Lifel' ff William Clyde Cameron Cooper lames Corlett Mathematics Science Mathematics james Erickson Lee Folsom John Fuller Mathematics Mathematics Mathematics A Charles Henderson Ivan jones Ora Krienke Sci f Science Science 1 Elmo Little Science Elizabeth Moser I g Science Doris Mullen Mary Simeon Mathematics Anna Steendahl Mathematics Phillip Stucky Mathematics Dean Walter Mathematics Science Oscar Rosenquist Science Iohn Rushing lifuthemutics David Scott Science fkr is Sciences Increase In Importance Science and mathematics have skyrocketed in importance in the nation's security, Roosevelt's Science Department is keeping pace with the future. Enriched courses in Chemistry ll, Physics ll, and accelerated Trigonometry, have been added to the curriculum. ln after-school hours, the teachers in these departments lead full lives. A favorite hobby of Mr. Cameron Cooper and Mr. Oscar Rosenquist is to capture the beauty of their trips with their cameras. Others of the department have interests which are related to the subject which they teach. For example, Mr. Lee Folsom's leisure time interest is electronics. This last summer, Mr. Charles Henderson and Mr. David Scott matriculated at the University, the former as a student, the latter as a teacher of Physics. Mr. William Clyde spent the summer as Lieutenant Commander of a Navy submarine. Mrs. Norman also co-authored a Spanish text book which was published this fall. Trying to give us a better understanding of other countries, Social Studies teachers spend their vacations taking refresher courses and traveling. Miss Helen Anderson's last trip took her to such places as Australia and the Suez Canal. The Language Arts department endeavors to improve all communication. Recent activities of this group of teachers include: Mr. Gordon Mauer- mannis publishment of a playg Mr. Virgil Anderson's tour of Europe last summerg and Mr. Ivard Strauss's book on the art of stage direction which is in its final stages. Four new teachers were added to Roosevelt's faculty for the second semester. They are: Mr. Leonard Thrapp, Mrs. Helen Chess, Mrs. Agnes Arnold, and Mrs. julia Metz. Sophs Sample Education To build, one must start at the bottom, is a saying which Sophomores can apply to themselves. As the new underclassmen of Roosevelt, they must orientate them- selves by locating their classrooms, choosing extracurricular activities, and acquainting themselves with the traditions of Teddyville. Sophomores are required to take Language Arts 10a and 10b to earn a certificate or a diploma. World History, Geometry, and a foreign language are college requirements which often form tenth grade curriculum. The courses for the Sophomore year are selected during the preceding spring. A variety of electives is available. These include: Photography, Typing, Band, Jewelry, Electricity, Boat Building, Foods, and Navigation. Students in a Speech Arts class learn how to speak and act in front of an audience. Demonstrating are: Pat Wen- zlaff, jerry Walton, Craig Iohnston, Sandra Wood. This year an inside view of an up-todate Business Education Department which offers four courses, bookkeeping, clerical, retailing, and secre- tarial, is presented. Often students have found in one of these a foundation for their future careers. The school is indebted each year to this department for the mimeographing of the Sophomore handbook, the Compass, the Teddy Echo, Big Stick, and also the typing of most of the tests and bulletins. The classes in this department are very popular with the students, as can be seen by this year's enrollment, which totals 1,126. The big event for the com- mittee chairmen was the annual potluck dinner which afforded them a chance to become better acquainted. Yenom Ssap was a familiar quote seen throughout the halls of Roosevelt. This quote, literally Pass Money, aided in the sale of passes which enable the stu- dents to attend school activities. The Finance Committee has enlarged its functionsg the transfer of the Ground Improvement Committee to Mr. Rosenquist as a roll room project sparked additional student par- ticipation. The Inter-School Traffic Safety committee replaced the Health and Safety committee and shows signs of great activity. Besides producing the Senior play and the annual Rhytlwz and Riot Revue, members of the drama department participated in school functions including the orientation and tradition assemblies held in September and Cctobcr, respectively. The department presented HThe Dust of the Road, a one-act play, during the Christmas assembly in December. The Spring drama festival, a collection of fourteen one-act plays presented each year in April, is one of the departments major activities. The plays are entirely student-produced, and awards are given for best acting, directing, and scene design. Preceding the drama festival each year is the Pacific Lutheran College one-act play competition held in March. For the third consecutive year Roosevelt took top honors in this competition for its production, The Marriage Proposal, including first place play, first and second place actor, and first place actress. The stage force, make-up corps, and costume corps, pictured on the opposite page, work closely with the drama department each year, helping to insure the success of productions such as these.
