SINCE THEN, WE HAVE LEARNED TO RESPECT THE GUIDANCE THEY HAVE GIVEN TO US, AND TO APPRECIATE THE DOORS OF FRIEND- SHIP THEY HOLD OPEN FOR US. THE STRENUOUS LIFE STAFF DEDICATES TO REED FULTON AND ED HASSELBLAD THIS 1954 ANNUAL. Reed Fulton, Pnhcdaal OPENING DOORS to opportun- ity. These words might well por- tray the work of our principal, Mr. Reed Fulton, who, in a very real sense opens doors of learning to countless students. His reassurance and intelligent interest enable us all to appreciate him as a 'friend and guide. Mr. Fulton's training began in small Washington schools, culmin- ating in a degree from Washing- ton State College. He began opening doors for others at Sno- homish, where he founded the first high school newspaper in the Northwest. Following posi- tions held at Broadway and Bal- lard High Schools, Washington State and the University, he be- came principal of West Seattle High. Seventeen years later, in 1951, he came to Roosevelt as our principal. As evidence of his creativeness, Mr. Fulton will publish his eighth book shortly. He takes time, also, for family recreation with his wife and two married daughters. For all of us, he offers an invi- tation to a way of happiness as we enter the doors opened by this educator and friend. if-'ff T' .4 F- 'Q f,,, , , warg M., , -9 I T4 4 . mx ya V491 Q' -3 'P- fi vl '53 , .T 'g ' K 3 g ' ' T .J m I T 2 P r ,fwg f. , 5,1 is , Vw? Stu- dents continuously pass through faculty doors at Roosevelt with hopes of fulfilling their dreams. Many, who sought vocational guidance, have been inspired by teachers, others, who needed scholastic strength, have found it, and still others have been encouraged by friendliness. The faculty endorses student government and has tried to help build this phase of student life. Roosevelt teachers have inspired and encouraged many students in the business of daily living. Sit still, smile, and . . . nextl the photoman chants. Janet Kirby's pass picture is completed for l953, but Beverly Tratnik and Pat Munro must still grin and bear it. Seated at long tables on Octo- ber 'l4, eight of our student leaders and four faculty mem- bers were hosts at the all-city Leadership Conference in the Northeast YMCA. All the roll rooms deserved hon- orable mention on color day, but Miss Hawkins' room won the contest. Green and gold trimmings made this October 27 a real birthday treat for Theodore Roosevelt. Through roll room proiects, stu- dents were given the opportunity to become active in ASR. Some of these were: a Hi-way in the front hall, decorated rooms for Color Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day gift boxes for needy families, and drives for better conduct at games and assemblies. All-school activities included regaining the Golden Axe from Lincoln by winning the Pass Sales contest, and serving as host at a leadership conference attended by ofhcers of the eight Seattle high schools. Representatives were sent to a Traffic-Safety Con- ference. One of the last events of the year was traditional Cam- pus Day with its cottons, asseme bly, and baseball game. A democratic student govern- ment served as leader and co- ordinator of ASR. The ASR Cabi- net and Student Council worked to improve scholarship standards, roll proiects, student conduct, and teen-age driving, and tried to get every interested student into acti- vities. There's much hard practice be- hind the peppy songleading routines, as Roberta Hagist, Karen Ryning, Valerie Henning, and Sharon Lihou can tell you. Could it be that a student is actually leaving the study hall unnoticed, or is this the super- visor dutifully closing the door to prevent such an escape? The stairways and halls of Roos- evelt, lightened by windows and filled with students, form an indispensible part of our school life. Coached by Don Harney, the second team obtained fourth place by winning three games in ci row, one of which was a victory over Lincoln, our traditional rival. One untimely loss to Ballard spoiled the third team's bid for the champion- ship, but Coach Bob Lindh's boys captured second place, indicating their com- petflive strength. The Teds displayed early power in the Basketball Jamboree by beating Queen Anne and being high pointer for the East. The season openers proved discouraging, however, as the Teds lost to Frank- lin and Garfield. The Roughriders then came back to win their next four games with Cleveland, Queen Anne, Franklin, and West Seattle. Ballard finally ended the wfnning streak 58-57. Showing they still had fight, the Teds trounced Garfield, but were defeated the following week by Lincoln. Repeating their early season record, the Teds won their next three games, again over Cleveland, West Seattle, and Queen Anne. Snow cancelled earlier games with Ballard and Lincoln, so these were played last. The Teds downed both teams to put Roosevelt in a second place tie with Garfield and a chance to go to the State Tournament. A special playoff was held which Garfield won in a final three-minute overtime. 5l 'L if 'ull C Q f 4, . sf an XL My -IWW 7 mtuhg For Var hy COACHES JOHN FULLER and Bob Lindh sow their boys perform well this year. SINCE STRENUOUS LIFE went to press in April, we are not able to give any 'Fac- tual material for this season. This year, with Rod Faurot and Don Hopen, the only two returning Iettermen many new faces were seen on the diamond. Also a new screen backstop was in- stalled, and the field was given a good overhauling for the coming season. 1 57 Golfe s WM All-My olhfs THIS SEASON'S DIVOT diggers were out again to uphold the record of past Roosevelt golf teams. The Teddies have never finished out of the first division, and finished fourth only once. Teddyville has a larger golf turnout than any school in the city, and forty dulfers are vying for a position on the team. Last year's team, led by captain Larry Vann who won the Ernest Worth Trophy, finished in second place. With eight returning lettermen, this summer's team should be among the toughest in the city. Boys turning out for golf this year are: Richard Archer, Jack Bernard, Harold Chambard, Hugh Cook, Lee Copeland, Chuck Coyne, Bob Crosetto, Warren Dawes, Ray Dawson, Vic Ensz, Gary Flohr, Victor Gould, John Hays, Jim Howard, Donn Huey, Don Iverson, Don Jacobson, Kendall Kerr lmanagerl, Jim Lone, Kurt Moss, Eddie Needle, Ronald Paulson, Dave Richards, George Ricketts, Dick Robinson, Brud Russell, Richard Sackerson, Bob Saunders, Jimmy Shapiro, Dick Smelser, Don Webster, Tommy Wilson, Tom Wolthausen. 58 H EAD SHOTS. For the past fifteen years, the Roosevelt racquet squad has finished in either first, second, or third place. The Tennis Team has always helped accumulate points for the All-City Trophy, which we have won several times in past years. Coached by Mr. Mel Dranga, who has won three national tennis titles, last year's team finished in third place. This year, with two regulars and several lettermen back from last season, and several promising players coming up, we can say that the tennis team will carry out the good record this year and in 'future years. Those who turned out to defend our record were: Don Smetheram, Wright Smith, Bob Mehus, Jerry Evich, Gordon Winship, Kim Proctor, Lee Marshall, Bob Corning, Bob Lind, Dave Mehus, John Higbie, Les Eldridge, Rocky Bauer, and Bob Cross. 59 l wt' -, .. . 7'ea s Fleer feel THE TEDDY TRACK squad will be out again this year to retain the honors won by last year's Cinder burners. The l953 team won the All-City and Relay Carnival titles for the second consecutive year, in addition to winning all its meets. Roosevelt's chief threats will be fall-city miler, Mike Johnston, and all-city hurdler, Bill McFadden. Other returning lettermen are: Colin Hermans, Pete Cong- don, Ron Johnson, and Ed Cornell. With Coach John Fuller's talent of developing fine teams, the Teds should have another top track team. 60 FIELD CONTESTANTS. This year, Rho Club sold many pompons to the students. ln the spring, they were hostesses at an all-city brunch. Several playdays were held so that the girls could become better acquainted with each other. Other activities were their annual Mother-Daughter Tea and a luncheon in honor of the new officers. 7ea s .Ypnhg Athletes IN THE SPRING, thoughts turn to sports as Mr. Bob Bell's intramural program swings into eFFect. This increased popularity with Roosevelt students is evidenced by the fact that nearly half of the student body participated in these activities last year. The 100 Mile Clubbers finished their ordeal in the spring after pounding around the outside track 400 times. Hard working intramural managers had their hands full with the large turnout. After bowling all year as members of the roll room teams, John Torwick and Ron Sparks captured second place in the All-City Doubles for Teddyville. Intramural sports are becoming better and more widely accepted. Mr. Bell would like to see every Ted in an intramural activity. BOWLING. Peterson, Sparks, Buckley, Torwick. INTRAMURAL MANAGERS. Pete Scarpello, Marley Anderson, 0scar on Parade ENTERTAINING THE AUDIENCE with its variety of scenes, the l953 Revue, Oscars on Parade, presented on October 30-31, portrayed incidents that led to the awarding of the annual Arts and Sciences' Oscars. The writer-directors, starting early in the summer, wrote each scene, these were given continuity through the lnterludes. The writers were: Sally Sourwine, interludes, Paul Wineman, Talkative Twen- ties, Jane Wyman, Tulip Blankhead, Judy Moran, Oscar or Bust, and Steve Riley, The Tale of Prester John. Jack Morgan, a director, avoiding an actor's agent, suddenly encounters Lynda Lane, the leading actress of his current movie, in a park the night before the Oscar presentation. There he does his best to persuade Lynda that they have a good chance for an award. Lynda recalls how wonderful movies were in the Twenties, especially her uncle's scene at Mount Rainier. I6 WONDERING HOW their movie could compete with the wonderful, old-fashioned melodramas, she recalls . . episode six of Tulip BIankhead. After being distracted by two girls who . . couIdn't say 'No' , she talks about the pre- vious year's Oscar winner, Blood on Her Hands, and the trouble they had, especially when the director went mad. Jack does his best to cheer her up and she leaves feeling that The Tale of Prester John, a different kind of color cartoon, has a good chance of winning, His ideas prove right, too, for the next night Jack wins the Oscar for the best movie of the year and Lynda wins the best actress award. Something unusual was added to the Revue. Teddy Oscars were awarded each night. They went to Bonnie Caldwell, Andrea Melang, Tina Bader, Nancy Boyd, Bob Bender, and Dick Martin. v-r:.. -Q TULIP BLANKHEAD Upper left Mary Goss Louie Gel lerman Bob Bender John Basset Barbara Lovell TWENTIES. Miss Dorothy Gibbon Mrs. Ellen Smith. flax: of 1955 BY OPENING ROOSEVELT'S doors in September, the Juniors started a new year of learning and fun. Twenty-seven Junior boys played varsity foot- ball. Four of these won their letters. The boys were: Dave Boyd, Bill Johnson, Marty Jordan, and Tom Orrell. Later, these five Juniors sup- ported our varsity basketball: Dave Boyd, Tom Emery, Tom Orrell, John Sells, Jim Weymouth. ln the scholastic field, Juniors entered new doors to knowledge. The Torch Society honored 213 Juniors with two-bar pins. Helping run Roosevelt's school government were more active Juniors, who, after gaining major offices, used their ability to serve and improve school democracy. ln the Girls' Club, Dixie Thomp- son and Ann Christopherson held secretarial iobs. The Boys' Club had the assistance of Dave Holm- kvist, treasurer, and Bob Houk, secretary. Nancy Smart was elected vice-president of Torch, and Janice Funk was the Junior Representative to the ASR Cabinet. Senior Choir, the Dramatics Department, the News and Annual Staffs claimed the talents of numerous Juniors. Next fall these students will come back to carry their responsibilities as cap- able Seniors. In June the school year ends, but in September, Roosevelt's doors will open again to welcome the class of 1955 as Seniors. ADAMS, JAMES H. They started their activities with a tall party, The Winter Wiggle. The Juniors ioined the fun and helped to make it a big success. A record-breaking number of students signed for Senior committees, which accounts for the strong support shown at all their activities. Although the Varsity Football Team did not lead the league, they were tops in team spirit with Dave Davis receiving the inspirational award. Torch membership was high this year with a total of lol Seniors receiving their pins in an honor assembly. The spring party, picnic, Senior Prom and Com- mencement gave the year an exciting climax as the class of '54 closed behind it the doors of high school, going on well prepared for new adventures. The proiect, inspired by Ome Daiber, a voluntary rescue worker, was sponsored by Roll 218, headed by Bob Wettleson. Over four hundred dol- lars was raised at Roosevelt, and, with the cooperation of radio stations and newspapers, an additional four hun- dred dollars was collected from outside contributors. The fund will be spent on a fourteen-thousand dollar movie to educate the public in mountain safety in an effort to prevent future accidents. Gene participated in many activities, including sports, until his graduation from Roosevelt in 1951. He played baseball and was on the Seattle all-city second team of football. Outdoor adventure always held a strong challenge for Gene, and his close friends, who went with him from Roosevelt to the University of Washington, said Gene was happiest when he was mountain climbing. The committee hopes that the fund will continue to serve as a suitable memorial to Gene Hull, who would have been an ardent supporter of a program of safety in the mountains he loved. 142 Index Activity Recording Com. . . 20 Advisory Council .
