They put aside official duties to decorate and furnish new headquarters. Along with the newness of the ASR office came a campaign in Roosevelt- encouraging school spirit through roll room participation. Competition between roll rooms ran high and resulted in larger student rep- resentation at school productions. A mock election, outside traffic control, and Back-to-School Night were several of the activities handled by roll rooms. The ASR olticers and the entire student body make up the Associated Students of Roosevelt. The diagram at the right shows the formation of this organization. The ASR is proud of its democratic form of school gov- ernment. Students and teachers working together to make better citizens characterize the ideals set forth in the little red school house. And the purpose of this organization shall be the encouragement and reward of high attainment on the part of students in the matters ot scholarship, leadership, service, and character development. Il In these few words taken from the constitution of the Roosevelt High School Honor Society is the spirit of Torch. Headed by Jim Roller, president, Christine Nelson, vice-president, Suzanne Trimble, secretary, and Ann Nilsson, treasurer, the members of Torch were back of every school activity at Roosevelt, socially and in service to others. As Miss Anna Steendahl, Torch adviser says, You can't put your finger on Torch as a single group. Everywhere you turn they are there, doing things for others and the school at every opportunity. Every year, many entering sophomores try to attain the honor of belonging to Torch in their first semester at Roosevelt. This year many were successful. Nearly forty per cent of the more than nine hundred entering sophomores made Torch. web! gif a meclaf or a goal' Adkisson, Sandra Armstrong, Margaret Arnold, Anne Backman, David Bakeman, Jim Barrett, Sulanne Bedford, Audrey Bentley, Barbara Boyd, Bob Brotnov, Warren Brown, Ellen Brown, Sally Bryon, Bert Bryant, Fred Bryant, Nancy Bunker, Russ Bursett, Beverly Bursett, Frances Busch, Eva June Carlgren, Virginia Chapman, Carol Chichester, Jerry Church, Frances Clow, Lynn Cross, Carroll Culbertson, Richard Cummins, David Cunningham, John Dailey, Janet Dark, Duane Decker, Jay Doepke, Martha Dotson, Marylyn Edensword, Jon Erickson, Ed Faull, Beverly Feldt, Evelyn enior Filigno, Toni Foord, Marilyn French, Alice Gill, Betty Gill, James Givens, John Green, Ann Greggerson, Beverly Halverson, Marit Hanley, Virginia Hanson, Alice Hartman, Hugh Hecht, Harry Hendrickson, Tom Hesse, Margaret Hill, Georgia Ann Holmkvist, Eric Houk, Ted Hovey, Richard Howard, Richard Hutchinson, Harriet lmpett, Jim Irving, Eldon Jacobs, Barbara Jenks, David Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson, George Jordan, Trudy Juergens, Charles Keys, Susan Kiaer, Sonia Knappe, Robert Langely, Ernestine Lantow, Sharon Layson, William Leech, Richard l.ince,William Qui! an CZFCL Logan, Joon Mackenzie, Mary Manley, Laurine Marston, Joan Martin, Arthur Martin, Dorothy Lea Mather, Judith Matter, Marilyn McAllister, Betty McGee, Maureen McNamara, Jack McNeal, Linda Meisner, Adele Metz, Shirley Michaelson, Charles Miller, Jack Mullen, Joyce Mullins, Kathleen Nilsson, Ann Odell, Rollin Olsen, Adele Pearce, Jillian Pearce, John Pearson, Jean Pearson, Lois Pence, Peter Peringer, Mike Perkins, luann Peters, Doug Peterson, Barbara Peterson, Janice Potter, Tom Putnam, David Quickstad, Karen Reddick, Robert Robbins, Nancy Roller, James J .Simff Roop, Madeleine Rosenquist, Rowena Rushing, Robert Sachs, Marie Savage, Rosemary Savage, Sharry Schnatterly, Ann Scott, Delight Scott, Heather Shaw, Leonard Simpson, Don Sipherd, David Siolseth, Jack Stixrude, David Stritmotter, Violet Stuckey, Don Swedlund, Elaine Swenson, Arnell Tagg, Sherry Teach, Gary Thomas, John Thorn, Rodney Thorssen, Eunice Torrence, Clarice Trofter, Carol Tryon, Lianne Van Buskirk, Marci Vaughn, Jack Wahl, Karen Wakefield, Carol Wonomaker, Jim Watkins, Sue Wernli, Lou Ann Wettleson, Ann Wharton, Sidney Williams, Gary Wilson, Paul Balch, Foord, Beverly Marilyn Carlgren, French, Virginia Alice Cranage, Gillanders, Mary Lou Kathy Hannafin, Jenks, Marilyn Dave Hanson, Miller, Alice Sally Impett, Morrison, Jim Jean Ol' g0f6!Ql'l t0l'lgU,8 CUT, ,060 Patton, Peters, Joanne Doug Peer, Rushing, Carolyn Bob Perkins, Scott, Luanne Heather Smith, Teach, Lynda Gary Stixrude, Wahl, Dave Karen Stone, Williams, Delores Gary ,xv 1 4 .ini -i,' Q 33' we f '..?-3 X X51 ,W-uqal! One high point in Roosevelt athletics is its fine intra- mural program. Under the direction of Howard Bel- lows, our intramurals offer sporting fun tor both boys and girls. This year's program had a great start with such activities as: the fishing derby, intramural out- ings, archery, fencing, wrestling, and a new idea ot tilms on athletics shown every Thursday morning. An organization that always attracts many boys, who are enthusiastic about the track season, is the One Hundred Mile Club, which offers an opportunity tor all to participate in school sports, and to make new friends at the same time. , 1 SWIM TEAM . A. Milne satire, a Southern lynching, and a melodrama in which the audience participated, the Senior Play class presented its annual 3 in l production this year. The satire, The Ugly Duckling, was a study in mistaken identity. lt featured a tradi- tional prince and princess who managed to become romantic despite the confusing cir- cumstances. Judge Lynch, the psychological drama, showed the tenseness in the Southern part of our country concerning racial differences. The melodrama, Ported on Her Wedding Mom, was alive with meaningful gestures and visible emotions-a perfect example of the Delsartean period of emoting. SPRING COMEDY Roosevelt's Spring Comedy this year was an adaptation of Booth Tarkington's book, The Fighting Littles. The Little family is a typical one, dissention among the ranks of the children topped by parental intervention. we 5,00 8 OU! ifled gl Cl6!ll,6Lfi0l'l Cty EQQWWVQW JUNIOR CHOIR Back row-Clyde Hackworth, Roger Kelly, Bob Ames, Doug Benedict, Paul Carlson, Dale Marcott, Albert Bransteller, Shirley Peters, Barbara Lovell, Evelyn Patisonp third row-Barbara Strain, Colleen Sloan, Darlene Walker, Roberta Scott, Barbara Killian, second row--Barbara l.aVasseur, Eleanor Noble, Sally Pontios, Colleen Dennis, Sarah Roblee, Carole Benson, Elaine Swedlund, front row--Shirley Arncson, Janet Duerteldt, Cheryl Stern, Jean Scott, Karen Kilclahl, Jim Merrell, Carrie Oosterwyk, Marcia Turnbaugh SENIOR CHOIR Back row-Gordon Ritchie, Jack Monnie, Charles Falconer, Dick Havey, Fritz Hull, Tom Taylor, Judd Pack, Arnie Young, Jim Relf, John Darnitio, third row-'Joyce Hitt, Karen Harvey, Clyde Hackworth, Jake Bergslien, Gerry Pond, Carl Jackson, Dick Williams, Jerry Scansen, Carol Wakefield, Carole Wilkins, Ann Nilsson, Arnell Swenson, second row-Ginny Hanley, Jeannie Durham, Shelby Collard, Martha Jean Crain, Karen Moe, Sonia Kiaer, Martha Sue Doepke, Ellen Brown, Lynn Clow, Janet Dobbs, Marilyn Anderson, Ernestine Langley, front row-Sylvia Davids, Audrey Morton, Marylyn Dotsin, Joan Marston, Toni Filigno, Dorothy Clark, Nancy Sunde, Trudy Jordan, Nancy Stone, Carol Sutch, Nancy Bryant. These youngest Teddies elected as their officers: Dixie Thompson, president, Pat Wellman, vice-president, .lune Huckle, secretary, and Pat Miller, treasurer. Ron Trumble served as sophomore representative to the ASR cabinet. With the able help of their advisers, Mrs. Ellen McComb Smith and Miss Dorothy Gibbon, the ofticers led their class through a very successful year. Spring Roundup was the name of the class party held in the lunchroom, on March 5. Refreshments and entertainment were part of the program. Members of the party com- mittee were: Chuck Michener, Pat Michelson, Roberta Scott, Loretta Gustafson, Lee Cope- land, Fred Harris, Donna Fennell, Maralee Brown, Terry Latourette, Hugh Cook, Trina Elggren and Nancy Taylor. Nearly one-third of the class received Torch honorship, and Sophomore Suzanne Trim- ble was elected treasurer of Torch. Some members of the class appeared in the Revue, the Opera and various other productions throughout the year. Other activities that inter- ested the sophomores during the school year were Girls' and Boys' Club committees and ASR committees. Class Advisers: Miss Helen Anderson, Miss Alice Wiley Class Party Committee: Roger Metz, Barbara Bye, Patsy Bailey, Eleanor DeTurk Ten juniors, who fought as hard as the senior Football Heroes , landed in the spotlight this year. Rodney Bown, Truman Cragin, Dave Davis, Colin Hermans, Roger Kelly, Joe McDaniel, Colin Nisbet, Ron Ulvin, Ray Webb, and Art Wiper all received their varsity letters. The juniors also made a good showing in all other school sports. Breaking even last year's record of 158, this year's Junior Torch had T65 members enrolled. With the help of all the juniors who joined and worked in Boys' Club, Girls' Club, A.S.R. and class activities, this year has become the best one ever for student participation. Entertainment, dancing, and refreshments were fea- tured at this year's Junior-Senior Party, Under the Big Top , held October l6, after school in the lunch- room. Carrying out the circus theme was the conces- sion-like refreshment stand, which gave out dixie cups to the hungry crowd. After watching acting, singing, and clowning acts, many of the spectators remained for dancing. With the aid of the advisers, Miss Alice Wiley and Miss Helen Anderson, the iunior officers, Roger Winter, president, Ivaly Jones, treasurer, John Bisset, vice- president, and Sharon Hull, secretary, led the class throughout the year in school activities. Q., Jerry Chichester Ipresidentj, Joan Schaeffer fvice-presidenti, Connie Busigan qsecretaryi, Kerin McAllister ltreasurerj 1953 Standing in line at the graduation ceremonies, mem- bers of the Class of 1953 reviewed their life at Roose- velt: their entrance as freshmen and sophomores . . . first ventures into activities . . . the fall class parties that became traditional, climaxing with the Senior Party, Under the Big Top . . . acquiring the inevit- able books and report cards . . . loyally rooting at the games, cheering the football team to a state cham- pionship, the basketball team to the state tournament . . .consuming enormous quantities of hamburgers and cokes . . . applauding school productions and their class play, George Washington Slept Here . . . daily studying and last minute cramming for finals which gave the Senior Class a high representation on the Torch Honor Society . . . working on clubs and com- mittees . . . and as a last act of friendship, signing their yearbook, the Strenuous Life. All of these activities were overshadowed by Senior Week. Highlighting the picnic was the reading of the Will and Prophecy. Then came that most important of all high school dances, the Prom, and with it, formals swishing to dreamy music. At the close of Commencement, the seniors have their four years of high school in memory only, and their future, planned in dreams. flzem ayzi id gone oreuer. i Aline Ablilt Roll Rep. Thrift Com.
