Dave Matheson put over the clincher in the third quarter. Ending a 57-yard drive Matty' scored from the one-yard line. Bob Johnston s kick was good making the score T3 to O. The purpose of such a club is to lead girls toward higher standards, self control and a democratic way of life, and to provide a helping hand to new girls in acquainting them with the school and students. Girls secure a better sense of responsibility and a spirit of friendliness because this is an organization in which all may actively participate with no partiality shown. Following the creed of the Girls' Club, a good club member tries to be joyous, courageous and courteous, truthful, considerate and iust, loyal and sincere in friendship, too noble to speak ill of others, willing to forgive and forget, prompt and gracious in obedi- ence, respectful to her elders, ready to do all possible service, and quick to appreciate what is done for her, so that she may become a fine and worthy woman. Highlights of the past year were: the creed drive, the Mother-Daughter Tea Brigadoon under the chairmanship of Jill Pearce, the Father-Daughter Des- sert Party Acorns and Oaks planned by Nancy Silli- man and her committee, and the Mother-Daughter Banquet held in May. Years will pass rapidly after graduation, but Roose- velt girls will forever look back on the Girls' Club with appreciation for teaching them leadership, under- standing, tolerance, the ambition to strive for a definite goal, and for its part in making their high school years happy ones. To the staff member it means that an- other week's work has come to a successful finish. To the student it means that once again he may read about his friends, teachers, and school activities, as well as enioy the jokes, poems, and amusing articles which are traditional with the Roosevelt News. This year the fumbling footsteps of the green ad and news staffs were guided by a new adviser, Mr. William Hall. During the fall semester he and the staff members published twelve papers. The two staffs are chosen from the Newswriting I classes. Applicants for positions submit their qualifica- tions to Mr. Hall and the editors. From these the crew is chosen by the old staffs, editors, managers, and the adviser. Each news staff member is assigned a beat which he must cover every week. A certain area is assigned to each ad staff member in which he solicits for adver- tisements. The new editors and managers are selected by the old editors and managers with Mr. Hall's assistance. The editors plan the papers, while the managers han- dle the business side of the News. Through the cooperation of all these groups each issue of the paper is written, sent to press, and finally distributed to the eager students. The pitching staff will most likely be headed by Doug Peters and Dick Werelius, while, catching behind the home plate, Jim Coshow and Marvin Behar look like promising material. These boys, who start their circle running in the early spring, are out to capture the crown for '52, and all Teds are along with them on this wish. One of our maior sports, track, is drawing a large crowd this year and Coach John Fuller is expecting a record year to follow up his very successful basketball season. ln looking at our lineup for this year, we class the cinder boys in two groups, the runners and the field contestants. Both groups have impres- sive rosters, with lettermen returning to give some experience to the squad. This year running the track will be John Meyers, Tom Winters, Warren Petersen, Pete Arrivey, Art Martin, Doug Clarke, and many more, while in the field, these boys will be working for Roosevelt: Jake Bergslien, .lim Richards, Harlan Thomas, Walt Storer, Bob Bradner, and Mike Monroe.
