enders and the league-leading Quakers. Both teams had bowled over their opponents as wind blows over matchsticks and now were meeting head on. For the winner: the chance to perform in the Turkey Day game. Local papers had considered this tussle a tossup, so when the teams A necktie hold during the Franklin fracas trotted out on the field, the 11,200 odd spectators gathered to witness the game were on the edges of their seats. Franklin elected to receive and the Teds kicked off. From that moment until the final gun, the Roughriders dominated the play completely. The Teddy forward wall opened the holes, and the mail carriers went dancing through. In any game, there are boys who deserve honorable mention, but in this championship game all of the boys performed as a unit. So let’s just say, “Congratulations to the City Cham- pions! As for the final score, it read 20-6. 2?

Cleveland was next to fall beneath the Ted’s oncoming grid machine. In spite of a slippery turf, the local outfit rolled up two touchdowns and kicked an extra point in checking the Southenders 13-0. First-half scoring threats vanished as both teams bogged down when the Oozing to a 0-0 tie with Ballard Hup, tuh, three, four . . . going got rough. Roaring out after intermission, the undaunted Green and Gold drove straight down field for the first T.D. After the try-for-point had split the uprights, the Roughriders again found the scoring circle when the three M’s (McNamee, Mosteller, Monroe) combined their efforts to set the pattern for Gene Hull to pull a quarterback sneak. This drive covered 70 yards, and with the win, the stage was set for the season’s finale with unbeaten Franklin. The scene was Memorial Stadium, time 8:00, as a football could be seen spinning end- over-end toward a Franklin backfield man. This game linked together the once-tied North- 28

Roosevelt’s sensational campaign of football came to a climax when the second and third teams turned in first place ties in their respective leagues. Following in the footsteps of their big brothers, the Harney-coached second team boys walked over all opposition and fell only to Ballard. Like the varsity, they found the going in this one rough, and were beaten by a 93-yard interception in the closing minutes. The score, incidentally, was 7-6. Other wins in their favor were Garfield 19-6, Lincoln 13-6, West Seattle 19-13, Queen Anne 13-7, and Cleveland 7-0. Second Team Left to right: Babcock, Benson, P. Williams, R. Bean, Johnson, R. Williams, Clasen; backfield, left to right: Markey, LaBossiere, Wy- rick, Groesbeck, Newell, Flohr Third Team First row, left to right: Lence, Storer. Foster, Perringer, Leeper, Coach Lindh, Gardner (Mgr.), Barnes, T. Boyd, Richards, Coryell, Decker. Wallock, Young; second row: Slick. Byker, Benton, Cragen, Bown. Caster. Solhaug. Salvason, J. Wilson, Stoll, Lehmann; third row: Pfister, Morgan. Werelius, J. Davis. Machior. P. Wilson, D. Davis, Bergslicn, Nickolson, Potter. B. Boyd. Scanlon; fourth row: Day, Frack, Huckle, Bradley, Knudsen, McDonald, Nisbet, Free- man. Lyons. Denny At the opening gun, spectators saw a line which included Dann Clasen and Frank Babcock, ends; Lonnie Benson and Wendel Wyrick, tackles; Bob Johnston and Don Farra, guards; and hovering over the pigskin, Ron Bean. The backfield combo was made up of Jes Groesbeck, Pete Newell, Harold Olsen, and Bill Reams. After a slow start, in which Garfield laid low the inexperienced Ted yearlings 23-0, they went on to share first place laurels with Lincoln and Garfield with a record of 5 wins and 1 defeat. As the season progressed, the team improved and touchdowns were a dime a dozen. They rolled up 126 counters, or an average of 25 points per game. Holding down starting jobs in the ball-packing department were Mike Perringer, Arnie Young, Jack Wallock, and Jerry Foster. Along the forward wall, plugging their respective holes, were ends—Jim Richards and Bill Lince; tackles—Wayne Coryell and Dennis Barnes; guards—Walt Storer and Hal Leeper; and center—Dave Solhaug. With only four returning letter winners back to bolster the squad in ’52, it’s a sure bet that folks will be seeing some of these boys out on the gridiron come game time next fall. 30
