Throughout the year of play the team was led by sandy-haired Captain Bob McNamee who on and off the gridiron proved his ability as a leader. “Mac” showed his leadership by di- recting defensive strategy and settling all questions of penalties, using his judgment to call the right move. Each year after the record books have been tucked away, the local papers announce their selection of boys who, in their judgment, performed notably on the gridiron. Selected from Roosevelt were: Karl Benjamin, Larry Frack, Mike Monroe, Bob McNamee, and Bill Hudson. Win number six came at the expense of the Franklin Quakers who were no match for the power-laden Teddies. Smothering their ground attack and blanketing their air game, the Riders easily grabbed the city title, chalking up their sixth win against one tie. As the game ended, loyal fans poured from the stands and jubilantly rocked the white goal posts to the ground. After the city laurels were taken, the Cowen Parkers set their sights for state honors. Over in the rain-soaked Memorial Stadium the Pirates from Spokane put on a great show, but came out on the short end of the score. Defensive and offensive ball- clubs were also chosen by the press. Monroe and Benjamin re- ceived enough votes to earn spots on both units. Gaining honorable mention were such stalwarts as Gary Woodcock, tackle; Andy Espinoza, center; Don Lumley, end; plus Mel Mosteller and Gene Hull in the backfield. Spectators had just settled down for the first regular game of the season when on the initial play from scrimmage, Chuck Lewis of Garfield gathered in a stray Teddy pass and romped 32 yards for the first touchdown of the game.
