A lot of credit goes to the winning team, but actually the bulk of it belongs to the coaches. For it is these men who day after day drill the fundamentals into their players. In this case Lou Hull and Don Harney were the cogs behind this year’s championship team. Hats Off to the fensive patterns and inserting subs are some of the duties of a football coach. Rain, wind or snow couldn't keep these two sport enthusiasts from turning out ballclubs and it’s good to know that they’ll be around for years to come. Also much credit is due to Doug Vickory, ex-grad, who lent his time and talents in assisting Lou to whip the varsity into shape. State Champs State Champs?!! For the first time in the history of Seattle high school football, Roosevelt collected enough votes to place them at the head of the list in state competition. As a result of their convincing 18-12 victory over John Rogers of Spo- kane, sports writers from around the state tabbed the Teds, “mythical state champions.” The record looks easy in black and white print, but from the opening gun to the end of every game, the boys who donned the pads and cleats played their hearts out to bring the honors home. The scoreboard lights spelled wins” in eight out of a possible nine outings. The only dark cloud on the Teddy schedule was Ballard, who halted the Teds’ offensive at- tack and gained a 0-0 tie. Franklin ... 6 Starting the campaign with the colorful Jamboree, Ted followers sensed a successful year of football when the Green and Gold soundly waxed arch-rival Lincoln 6-0 in their stanza of play. Ironing out the mistakes shown in the Jamboree, the Teddies put on a one-gang show, as they picked up win number one in league play with a 19-6 triumph over the Purple and Gold of Garfield. Again the Roughriders found the Lynx to their liking, and when forty-eight minutes of playing time were up. the score read 26-14. During the game, Mike Monroe established himself as truly one of the all-time greats of Roosevelt. He personally accounted for one touchdown and passed for two others. His rush- ing total for the evening was 175 yards, or an average of 1 1.5 every time he packed the ball. After West Seattle and Queen Anne had fallen victims to the Hull aggregation, Ballard pulled the plug and held the Roughriders scoreless. Although this setback lowered their spirit, their morale was high when they clashed with the luckless Cleveland Eagles. Held to a 0-0 tie at inter- mission, and realizing that they must win if they expected to stay in contention for the crown, they chalked up two touchdowns and added a try-for-point to make the record- book stand 13-0. 21
