First there is infancy, when growth is so startling because of the newly-developed powers of mobility and communica- tion. Then comes childhood, when growth is at a steadier pace. Soon, however, the city is an adolescent sprawling in all directions. Thus has it been with Seattle, hurrying through these periods in less than a hundred years. Ahead lies the opportunity for each of us to share in the enrichment of the life and culture of our city in its finest age-its adulthood. ll

From these advantages we detract, or to them we add through high ideals and purposes. just as Pericles declared in explaining the merit of beloved Athens two thousand years ago, A spirit of reverence pervades our public acts . . . an Athenian citizen does not neglect the State because he takes care of his own household, so today through pride and high integrity the citizens accomplish the greatness of our city. lo
