Like a great magnet My America has drawn from all the world elements both good and bad. Of the good we are peculiarly conscious here at Roosevelt High School. We hum- bly give our thanks that our heritage is great and far-reaching. We honor those who have enriched our school life by their Wide ex- periences .... Arnerica, we sing of Thee. . Gozzfezzfs: ADMINISTRATION, CLASSES, ASSOCIATED STUDENf ACTIVITIES, HONORS AND AWARDS, PUBLICA- TIONS, SPORTS, SCHOOL LIFE eclicafimz To our friend and Miss Alma Ward teacher . MISS ALMA WARD ..... Who faithfully directed the activities of the Strenuous Life for a period of seven years, we dedicate this nineteen hundred and thirty-four MY AMERICA edition. For these years, filled With thoughtful, sympathetic guidance and inspir- ing suggestion, we are very grateful. To Miss Vwfard We express our sincere appreciation for her fine direction of the Strenuous Life. . . Z6 MEQ'lQARIIffX3Ifl By Raymond Royal President of Associated Students DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR of 1933-1 934, it has been our good fortune to have had none of our classmates included in the year's memorial list. lt is appropriate that this year's memorial be dedicated to the living of our school, who have given por- tions of their lives that We might realize the fulfillment of our forefathers' dreams. ln complete fairness We cannot dedicate this progress by a mere memorial. Rather it is for us to show gratitude to our beloved fac- ulty and classmates by devoting the remain- ing.portion of our lives to the betterment of a nation that has given us such an inspiring heritage .... For it is better to live, than to die, for one's God and Country. . . Photo by John J. Yaw Knowledge, the guardian of our school, silently protects its portals, remembering always those who have entered here. gf-xmtreum By George F, Pierrot Managing Editor, The American Bog - Youth's Companion IT IS IN SOME ways not an advantage that America is a young people in a young land, We have not yet had time to develop a cultural tradition of our own .... On the other hand, we are immensely for- tunate in being a mixed people. We are able to draw richly on the tempered cultures of the Old World, and the Old World has been most generous with us ..... Perhaps, in the American test tube, can be fused the sturdy time-tried integrity of the older peoples with the high-hearted ideal- ism of a new race, now being born, . . That is what I hope, for My America. V v, M r X Photo by Ralston Studio Led by the spirit of Liberty and Justice, members of the four races enter Roosevelt to become components of its Whole. My SCI-ICDCDI. By Carol Scholl President of the Girls' Club THE PLACE WHERE I have been taught consideration and unselfishness, due to contacts and associations with my class- mates, is my school. Here I have spent countless hours at studies and activities both of which have brought me an infinite amount of pleasure. The building is a place of beauty, but much more beautiful are the cherished memories of happy days spent within its halls. Cherished also are the memories of our instructors by whose per- sonalities we have been inspired .... The training ground for future citizens who will guide Our America of tomorrow is my school-Roosevelt High School. Photo by John J. Yaw Portals to knowledge ever lighted . . . by day with highest desires for learning, by night with guiding lanterns of hope. My scmootwxtts By Kirk F. Rcmsdell l 934 Senior Class President LAUGI-IING, SERIOUS, determined faces rise before me when I hear the words, My Schoolmatesf' Young, happy facesg yet they reveal the qualities of the man or the Woman to be, As I look about me now, and see strong youth and beauty, still devel- oping, I Wonder what lies beyond the dim mists of the future ....... Many of my schoolmates will realize treas- ured hopes and ambitions. Great careers lie ahead for some. Yet for others there is to be nothing more than a quiet life on very moderate means ....... However each fate is cast, something to be treasured has been receivedg something to keep locked in memory-just being school- f77Ul'eS. .....,. . W WAV Photo by John J. Yaw A spirit of friendliness and goodwill prevails throughout our school, making our high school days most enjoyable ones. iff? ffl Administrotion By Catherine Caraher Editoz'-in-Chief of 1934 Srrenuous Life WHAT A JOY to be an American, with the privilege of sharing the cultural in- fluences of other nations .,.., An unending stream of people came to our country bringing new ideas and principles. These yellow, red, black, and White people were animated by the Spirit of America, and imbued with a great desire to develop in freedom. For that reason they gave great support to each other, and many of them became our most outstanding leaders. We of Roosevelt have had to pay nothing for the generous contributions of our ancestors to My America. However, to those who sacri- ficed their dearest ties to make My America, I am exceedingly grateful ..... ix K WN er ,lf Up PX yy V kiii, A llll 4444! This was written at a time when ancient Greeks divided the peoples of the world into only two groups, ascribing to themselves the place of supremacy ...... It has been difficult for the world to get away from the Greeks' view, in spite of an occasional sage's broader vision. But in our day progress is evident. The theme of this year's Strenuous Life is a frank 16 acknowledgment of our indebtedness to many nations of the V. K. Fmuza, Principal world. .E . . . It does not detract from an individual's greatness to acknowledge the contribution of others to his own culture. On the contrary, it is a manifestation of a magnanimous spirit as well as a mark of real progress, and progress is the most inspiring fact in history. . . Likewise, people who place their sickle into the ripened fields of world experience to add to their own store of national refinement are destined to greatness ............ The blood of the leading nations courses in our veins, contributing mental agility, moral stamina, and physical strength. Such blending guarantees both progress and permanence ........ V. K. It has gathered together the bountiful fruits of other races to aid in creating an American civilization. . . The English came to America to relieve themselves and their children of the per- secutions and intolerances, which they had suffered in their former homes. America, through these pilgrims, has become a haven for the persecuted peoples of many races. They have passed on to us, their successors, a challenge to incorporate into our lives a desire for enlightenment, democracy, and an appreciation of the opportunities of a free public school system which they have founded in our land ...... To the English we are particularly grateful for the development of our language, law, and literature ........ 26 f 1 fm' V :Q gf V , vliflllffflmll-V Ui LE ' 'fe If Q X E1 X Z 3 XT' -Sggflg imu,45! , t SV f d IW 1' 1 ww XX!! ww 'm nn f HI I I L Q lm I 1 Lf---ff 'f3??if7 ' hath- . va A A 391 MW? if 5 'WF W Wu if wh 2 ' gal 'W 554102 wk 4901 .gg-.ff ,,f' ,Hum my 1:2 :zzz 3:2-1' an Gdensen 41 i1- X444 4-X-444 iiif -xu IIIIIIII 4 44444 4 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Kirk Ransdell Irwin Lauchs Charlotte Wright Max Bice President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Tl-lE SENTOR CLASS OT I934- has shown iTselT To be a leader Throughoulr The school, being ouTsTanding noT only in sTuclenT governn'ienT, clran'iaTics, aThleTics, and debaTe, buT also in scholarship, in which iT won The class award. . . . . . . . THE LIBRARY: CENTER OF Q PUBLICATICDIXIS A MODERN NATION could not long exist without publications. As soon as large countries developed, the science of printing was established. The Gutenberg press was only one of the inventive and scientific dis- coveries, made by the Germans, which ended the Dark Ages, and brought forth the period of Renaissance. Another means of self-expression, other than with words, also found its place in German life-that of music. It was in Germany that musical genius of the finest type dwelt. The pro- gressive spirit has always seemed to have invaded those people, and from their land has come forth the Youth Movement. . To this We have traced the origin of modern jazz which seems to have permeated deeply into the American youths' life. The people of the negro race, whose native songs have become our music, also have influenced our entertainment with their minstrels. The feature section of our book depicts some of the amusing incidents of the year. Though taken at random, they are similar to the Wandering stories of the end-men. The oriental race has given us their arts of pottery, silks, and gem cutting. Along with arts and music, industry has developed to unattained heights, furthered by the combined efforts of all the races. . 128 tiki iiivk tiff i k'k'k tiki ki:,:v5.j: ,:K H N .I A x g????xMsgiW WW lr Eggga Ag ,Wm 5 -Y WW 1' '12 h 7' ' -' - : I ... ... i...ZL,41 ,, MQW 1 1 H Lwfh-a::2L gmif.e gin!
