Texas celebrated its sesquicentennial anniversary, the 150th year with special license plates. Also the mascot was Texadillo who will make promotional hospitals and schools. His name is R. N . 5 Vrvv i f K Michael Drummond, a 24-year-old from Phoenix, made history as the youngest recipient of an artiiical heart. Drummond used the pump un- til a human heart could be donated. ,ff South Africa became a concern of most people when riots became the norm there. The 24 million blacks protested to the apartheid govern- ment in which they have no say. To date, some 675 South Africans have been killed in protests, only four of which were white. Reagan underwent surgery successfully and quickly resumed his presidential duties. His story was an inspiration to cancer victims and gave us a new awareness to the disease. a .. Grades became imply pass or fail. This created a pro- lem for some students. TR saw a new face on campus, John Vells, the new principal. The absences and tardies were cut down to 12 absences and to every 3 tar- dies there was recorded an absent. The telephone and after school tutoring system was still in full swing and used even more since you had to have at least three days of homework a week from each of your classes. This also put a strain on the teachers. This meant that they had more papers to grade and more pressure was applied to help the students with dealing with this academic alter. as The Statue of Liberty got a face lift this year. She stands 151 feet and weighs 280 tons, and is visible for 42 miles on a clear day. Quite impressive! U l . l ' t ' Q This past year has been one significant event after another in politics, sports, medicine, science, weather and history. Both victories and defeats, smiles and tears, were experienced like never before. Airplanes made the headlines repeatedly. TWA Flight 847 was a world-wide concern when Lebanonese terrorists held thirty-nine hostages for seventeen days. There were also many crashes including a Delta flight in Dallas due to an unpredictable, yet dangerous, wind-shear. With fatalities and injuries due to plane crashes on the rise, engines became a concern for all. Weathewvise, Hurricane Elena tormented the southeast United States for ' days before striking Louisiana and Mississippi. Also, in September, three earthquakes hit Mexico City within one week, the first one measured an 8.2 on the Richter Scales, with aftershocks being felt in Houston. It cost 4,000 people their lives. Texans pitched in and donated food, clothing, medical ' supplies and money to the survivors. Mrs. Reagan presented the city a check for 31,000,000 on behalf of the United States. Lance Singletary, f 4 junior, said 'sltls been rough. Z5 3 .Q if Locally, many San Antonians were evacuated from their homes when a gh V train derailment occurred and sulfuric acid was spilled into the Medina ' i r e 4 River. Lime had to be used to de-neutralize the acid. . -if F On the lighter side of the news, especially exciting events took place. i Halley's Comet upuncuated history like an explanation point in the sky CNigel Calder, The Comer is C0ming.O Since the comet can only be viewed every 76 years or ' so, catching a glimpse of it was reason enough to '6Count your lucky stars!', at And still another exciting event was when Pete Rose ofthe A Cincinnati Reds broke Ty Cobb's record of4, 192 hits. Cincinnati even named a street after their hero! This past year has been a definite heartbreaking and recordbreaking year!
