Quick movements and great style helped them to win their Teddy victory. That’s not all; our Swim team, with much smoothness ond finesse, took the groce of first place. Wrestling looked super as the Teds grappled their way to the top. That’s the Ticket! Sports wasn't the only thing Teddy's showed their spirit in. Among the many things, there was great pride token in the Internationiol Boccalaureate Program, making it possible for Teds to compete with students from all over the world. Another great opportunity that many students took advantage of was the new program called the Academy of Finance, This Program enabled many Teds to get the jump on the business world. Irene Dossier, who shared her activities between English and French, taught three sections in the fall, then switched to two ninth grode sections in winter. Marilyn Christian-Pieper ran a daily marathon, teoching one class at Washburn and the rest at RHS, but that changed winter tri when she became a full time Teddie. Jean Johnstad became the coordinator of the International Baccalaureate program but continued to teach two sections of English. Gene Lohman tought the IB course offered to juniors. Whether it was Lyle Abeln's intervention doss to help students poss the benchmark test or John Jennings' IB math course designed to challenge the brightest to compete internationally, math helped students think logically. Noncy Quint came to RHS late lost year, too late for yearbook coverage, and Michelle Marty joined the foculty last fall shortly after school opened. Quint taught the CBS science courses and Marty taught biology. The rest of the foculty remained the same with students offered both required courses such as science and biology and electives like chemistry ond physics as well os floriculture, horticulture ond greenhouse management. Because the Auto Magnet was part of the department, students from all over the city could register for courses offered. Both one and two-hour blocks of classes gave students the chance to engage in introductory as well as advanced training in industrial subjects. While it was common in the past for students to enroll in such dosses as o termination in their formal education, today industrial arts students are more frequently just beginning what will be many years of post high school courses. Herb Chambers was able to return after originally being cut due to seniority. The courses that were always in demand were the conditioning classes os well as the aerobics course. Eleven of the teachers worked with the Level IV program, sometimes called the Emerson program because of its affiliation with Emerson School. The rest of the teochers either worked directly with special ed. students or tracked their progress as they were mainstreamed into regular dosses. The ultimate goal was to provide as normal an education os possible for all students with special needs. In oddition to its regular staff, special ed. enlisted the support of poraprofessionols. There were three languages that were offered at Roosevelt: Spanish, French, and German. Drawing, painting, studio, sculpture and print making were art classes offered by Judith Leino and Lawerence Converse. New texts were a part of art. Not only did they do drawings in these dosses but they also learned about art’s history. From the first band performance at a pepfest to the finol choir performance at commencement, the purpose of the music progrom was to please. Day after day William Scripps and Elwood Johnson rehearsed and tuned, honed and perfected to attempt just the sound they wonted for their music. Students hod a large variety of choices for their talents: wind ensemble, concert choir, vorsity choir, even IB music for those really serious. There was more, depending on the trimester. Offering beginning courses in typing for students wanting some help in study skills and odvanced office practice to those seeking a secure job right after high school, the business department met the needs of those who selected its courses. Fully aware of the dependence of the 1980's upon computers, the department purchased new IBM systems that promised to provide a chance for students to learn the skills to be needed in the Twenty-first Century. Most students went to school three hours per day, then proceeded to work. Credits students got depended on how many hours they worked eoch week. It was usually two credits for working, and one credit for the program. The classes included sales and marketing, and work experience. Advisers were Gerald Springer, Ed Lue and Richard Dick. International Baccalaureate was introduced as a course which would be recognized in all countries. At Roosevelt, and three other high schools in the Minneapolis area I.B. courses began. Under the coordination of Jeon Johnstod R.H.S. gave courses in Spanish, World Studies, Biology, Math Analysis, Musical Theory, and English. The course of study was structured for 11 and 12 graders but pre-I.B. courses will be offered in grades 7-10. “Everything is just getting started so the program isn’t in full bloom, said Johnstod. In the Auto Body classes students could fix crinkled fenders ond crunched rear ends. The biggest problem is trying to fit in all the cars,” stated Brian (B.B.) Johnson. At presstime, some auto body students were trying to restore o 1962 Triumph Spitfire, which looked to be a two-year project. In the Auto Mechanics classes, students learned how to fix their vehicles under the tutelage of James Moody and William Elmquist. “The biggest problem is the difficulty students were having trying to schedule a two hour block ’ said Moody. The different hour shifts for the cooks meant that eoch had to work to have the lunches ready for the first lunch and each one that followed. The number of kids in the lunch room seemed to be the same as in past years, but the staff tried to tempt kids bock to the lunch room with the new types of shrimp and chef salads, and the new onion chips. Rooms and balls were the work areas for engineers to keep clean. Under the supervision of Jim Seeling, left at different hours of the day, and also had other jobs which needed to be done like cleaning up the auditoriun after programs, and cleaning up the gym after volleyball games and wrestling matches. Besides all the things that need to be done inside there was plenty of work outside for the school engineers. Many teachers used aides to help them keep track of student work and to record text book numbers, not to mention absence and tardy letters. The Media Center employed the help of students to process circulation information and to notify students of overdue materials. Since the Media Center is also an A.V. Center, students handled equipment and software. Office aides helped in the attendance office and the counselor's office. The bell has sounded its gong at Teddie football gomes for the past two years, but got a new address as a result of Roosevelt’s Homecoming loss to Edison’s Tommies. Started as a floating trophy in 1959, it made infrequent stops at RHS in the early years, won in 1964 and 1968 when Woshburn dominated Minneapolis conference football. In the 70’s Roosevelt took the lead and has been the conference leader more than any other school in the lost decade. BIG BAND ERA Short and sweet described the season for Roosevelt’s Marching Band. Even though the group met only fall trimester, when people thought of an RHS band, they thought of the sharp maroon and gold uniforms and the high stepping drum major. The flogline, too, was primarily a foil group, but the enthusiasm of the girls who populated it carried through the whole year. In early October, the band traveled to Door County, Wisconsin to march in a fall parade and relax in in the popular recreation areo. William Scripps taught the doss during the lunch hour so the band could practice their formations. That time slot allowed the marchers to practice without waking up neighbors and to split the period with physical education classes using the field. The traditional Masterworks concert had to be scrapped because by Sagamore presstime no money hod been allocated by the Fine Arts Department. The choir still planned a trip to Datona Beach, Florida, to visit Walt Disney properties, Sea World and Wet 'n Wild. All dressed up ond no pkxe to go was not the cose for the Madrigals. With the guys in their block tuxes, and the girls in their dusty rose formals, the singing elite started the year out serenading the parents ond focufty at Open House on October 6. Next they performed at the Homecoming coronation and the Senior Breakfast as well as numerous other school functions, neighborhood events and, of course, choir concerts. With only three returning singers, many were skeptical about how strong the group would be. However, under the supervision of Elwood Johnson, the 87 — '88 Madrigals came through singing a happy tune. BroSey White. 108 Block Culture Black culture meets Attempting to enhance a sense of value in students and to permit interested majority students t� learn about black contributions, Block Culture met regularly throughout the school year. The faculty adviser was John Bell, but the meetings were usually led by YMCA liaison Kelly Day. Generally the group met during the sixth period. One of the major purposes of the organization was to stress the importance of education to members. Because minority students are often termed “at risk, due to attendance and motivation problems, students were cautioned to take their dosswork seriously and work toward definite goals. Although membership was open to oil students, nearly all those who attended regular meetings were black. Block Cohort 109 Oil Quiz Bowl '88 Quiz Bowl got off to a slow start with four straight losses to Roseville, Spring Lake Park, Blake and St. Thomas Academy. For the third straight year RHS started the season on television, without any warmup matches. Because recruiting continued to be a problem, both television losses had at least half a team of contestants facing the camera for the first time. Only Glenn Williams and Bill Ekblod, who shared captain duties, retuned from last year. Karl Purcell joined at the beginning of the season, but hod to drop when swimming started. Joel Rova joined at the start of the season, and juniors Karen Beckett ond Laura Ehrlich were added in time for January meets, giving the team an alternate for the first time. Meets were held at North High ond telecast on cable TV. John Jennings and Daniel Krueger again coached the team. On February 4 the team rallied to win both matches against Roseville and Shaftuck to give the Teds a 2-4 seoson. Although the team devastated competition in the meet hosted by RHS, problem solvers hod to settle for a rather disappointing tenth place finish out of thirteen teams. Debbie Sayre and Jason Hite shared captain duties with Gunderson, and all three worked under the coaching of Fred Pearson. According to Sayre most practices were highlighted by quarrels between Gunderson and Senior Marcus Thrall. Gunderson and Tracy Schlotterbeck were listed as leoding teammates. The biggest tasks in choir were sight reading, learning parts, taking singing tests and practicing to be able to become independent singers. Unless a singer could hold a part while hearing others singing different parts, no real growth could result. Bel Canto Singers offered girls on opportunity to sing in a treble choir that tackled challenging music. Girls were chosen by audition and selected matching dresses to give their group a look os classy as its performance. Like Madrigals, they performed at all concerts as well as at special events. That is when Marching Band is dismantled and Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Dixieland Bond ond Jazz Band begin rehearsing for the concerts of spring. Jazz Band and the Dixieland players provided major portions of the entertainment at Winter Festival '88, where the King of Ice ond Queen of Snow were crowned. The most prestigious band wos Wind Ensemble, selected from the best musicians at RHS. Concert Band, as well as performing at concerts ond other functions, served as a training ground for Wind Ensemble. A source of excitement among bond members was the planning of a spring cruise to the Bohamos. One of their more noble civic efforts eoch year is their coordination of Operation Christmas Basket, a community food drive for disodvantaged families. Kelly Day, A YMCA employee, worked with Teddies os a leader in Black Culture, a group that met during school hours. The YAC Board, officers of the larger group, met together to plan sites of dances and parties held for students of RHS. Because the organization worked so closely with the school on so many projects, there were undoubtedly many who did not know that the Y rather than the school was the sponsor of a popular event. Trent Tremar was the loioson person who had to handle such heodaches os finding affordable sites and coordinating dates with other school and YMCA events. The cheerleaders of RHS attended most of the sports events to get the crowd cheering and show their school spirit. Cheerleoding is not as easy as it may seem, said Junior Debbie Daayk. “First you have to try out ogainst many other girts. If you make it, then there are many long hours of practice involved. Many of the practices for cheerleading started early in July. Money was involved, too. The cheerleaders had to buy their own uniforms, at about an average cost of $250.00. Marching with pom pons at the Minnesota State Fair the girls switched to flogs for the RHS football season. After herolding in the royalty at Homecoming and performing with the Marching Band at games, the line demonstrated that flogs are here to stay. The Rockettes consisted of thirty members. They competed in dance competitions such os the U of M Danceline Competition and other state wide contests. The Rockettes also marched in parades at Northfield, Pine City, ond Mora. Finishing first in competitions allowed them to march in the Aquotenniol parode. The Rockettes also got their picture printed in the St. Paul City Pages. Captains of the Rockettes were Vonessa Torres and Pam Shafranski. The Rockettes worked very hard last year getting up every morning in the summer and working out for about an hour and a half perfecting kicks and dance movements. Roosevelt scored 37, with their nearest opponent, South, posting a score of 62. The team also advanced to the Region 5 Championship held October 29 at Lake Nokomis where they finished third. Donold Jackson coached the team with the help of co-captain Katie Becker and Jenny Hanson. Hanson finished sixth just one place from qualifying for State. 128 Girts' Cross Coontry Ws' Cross Counlry 129 Competition tough Manoging to reoch o 3-3 conference record, the volleyball team beat both Edison and Washburn, but the Edison game did not go into their conference record. Even though they finished lost in both the Armstrong and Apple Valley tournaments, they knew that the competition was tough, and they felt that they put out a good effort. Co-captains of the '87 team were Penny Schmit and Lisa Dickey. Cooch Joan McNaughton was encouraged by the fact that the junior varsity team won the city title with promising younger players. The football team had won the City Conference three years in a row and this year seemed it would be another City Championship yeor because the same team had won the City Championship as sophomores. Captains Dana Krohn and Doug Voegle were strengths of the team olong with Che Whitside, Brion Oslund and Jim Storr. To the surprise of everyone Roosevelt lost the Conference opener to South 21-19. Following the finol game of the season, Coach Lowell Peterson announced his resignation from cooching. He taught at Hamilton on the Northside of Minneapdis. Penny Tollefson in freestyle and Michelle Whale in breast stroke and butterfly, competed on November 20 in State finals. Cooched by Moggie and Dave Hurley, the team earned a 2-3 record and finished first in the city in the 200 medley relay with Michelle and Tanya Whale, Jenny Bosshardt and Tollefson making up the team. Other highpoints of the season were the victories over North and Edison combined. This was our strongest seoson ever, having a participant in all but two events at Region finals. Along with their victory over nonconference St. Paul Acodemy, their 5-1 conference record earned the girls a berth in the tournaments, held too late for yearbook coverage. Both captains, Peggy Larson and Kristen Nelson, were juniors, so Hultgren, who was assisted by Jeni Thompson and Leslie Kruse, can hope for even better things to come. Injuries to key gymnasts perhaps kept the team from winning the city title outright rather than sharing it with Washburn and Southwest. They then went on to humble Humbolt to become Twin City champs again for the third straight year. The decisive 38-18 victory over runner-up Edison on February 5 settled the matter for the season. Coached by Jim Dotseth and his assistant Larry Brockel, saw victories in every weight category. Furthermore, Che Whiteside went undefeated at (or near) 167, os did Derek Jones at weights near 155. Dana Krohn lost only one match, a decision in the Osseo tournament. Whiteside and Krohn appropriately were co-captains as well. When Sagamore went to press, the wrestlers were entering the tournaments, hoping to go to State as a team. If not, then team members could qualify in individual categories. Starters Jenny Hanson and Cheryl Kraml suffered back and leg injuries and were sidelined. Senior co-captain Patty severson needed 13 stitches after the North game when she split her tongue. A couple of underclass girls, Angelique Brittain and Cindy Hovet, helped the team with good shooting. Frank Hentges coached the team. They were Rudy Jones, Brandon McLaughlin, Archie Tort and Tim Yurecko. Head coach was Eric Magdanz, who wos assisted by Dennis Stockmo and John Greenquist. As of February 12 when the Sagamore went to press, the team hod a 5-10 overoll record. In city play they were 2-3. Teammates ogreed that the highpoint of the season came in what turned out to be a losing effort, their 74-66 loss to Number 1 North. The Teds led for much of the game, only to see their lead fade in the closing moments. Starters on the team were Tart, Alvin Green, Eric Thomson, John Rose and Jason Wenschlag. The worst moment of the season came in a loss to South that could only be described os a blowout. Victories over Henry (65-64) and Edison (66-48) helped the Teds to a fourth place in the standings. Boyl Bcsketbal 151 Snow, not wins plentiful Although the first three meets were canceled for lock of snow, the snow finally fell, abundantly enough to cancel school. The cross country ski team did not fare well, however. They finally ended up with a 4-1 record. Composed of only six boys and three girls, the team, cooched by Lars Kindem, struggled, needing more depth. In the Washburn meet, for example, the girls could not score because four teammates were needed for scoring to be allowed. Both teams manage to beat North, the boys 12-0. the girls 6-3. Double wins over the North Henry combined team provided the rest of the victories in the 4-3 season. An unexpected loss (77-88) to Edison put the swimmers in a lower finish position than had been hoped. Coached by David and Maggie Hurley, the team had no single outstanding swimmer. In order to win a meet, everyone on the team hod to perform well, said Co-captain Dirk Rettig. He shared captain position with Jason James and Chris Bares (for diving). Disqualifications led to a disappointing 52-114 loss. Without the disqualifications, the score wouldn't have been so lopsided, said Rettig. Nonconference wins, though, produced the biggest thrills for fans and team alike as the Teds won two tournaments: Minnehaha and Redwing. Beating Rosemount 4-2 was another of the team's memorable victories. Coached again by Brian McKinley in his second year as head coach, the team racked up a more impressive 5-2 record in nonconference play for an overall record of 8-8-1 at presstime. Justin Jensen shared captain duties with Jeff Bosshardt, who with Brian Oslund was one of the team’s outstanding players. Bosshardt was leod scorer and Oslund lead defenseman. Losing to Henry, a team they were supposed to beat, and losing a number of one-goal games contributed to the downside of the season on ice. Hockey 157 Shaping up Whether it wos to stay in shape for a specific sport or just to maintain a healthy body, Teds took their conditioning seriously, sometimes using the equipment outside their regular class periods. While conditioning was not a varsity sport at RHS, one would never guess that from the enthusiasm shown by students. Four sections of the class were offered each trimester. Bodminton Tennis nets fourth Despite a 3-5 conference record, the Boys' Tennis team finished the 1987 season in fourth place. They completed the season with a 6-1 victory against North. Captain Bob Polak, Mike Thompson and Erik won singles motches. Their other previous victory was 4-3 against Edison. Both Paul Fudally ond David Nygoard were successful in singles play while doubles sets were taken by Dean Bornes-Steve Ocel and Adan Quaale-Pat Galvin. Although the team would continue into playoffs, their last two matches resulted in two shutouts against Washburn and Southwest. Some positions were overloaded while others were too thin. Amy Carlson, Lisa Dickey and Cathy Duffy were nomed to the All City Team. The team ended up tying Washburn for the City Title. The lack of seniors is very unusual, said Baseball coach Bob Anderson. Captains were Sophomore Jim Starr and Senior Dave Thompson. The Teds improved their seoson from 6-6 in 1986 to 8-4 giving them a second place finish. The team agreed that Junior Jim Custer was the most achieved player playing first base and leading the team in hitting. It is encouraging in that the young part of the team hos been running well. Where the disappointing part is, that a lot of seniors chose not to run, said Coach Freeman Mdnroy about the track team. The Teddies placed first in three meets: Henry Sibley Co-Ed Invitational; Apple Valley Sophomore Meet; Roosevelt Invitational. They were sophomore city champs. Hopwood, who finished first in shot put and second ploce in discus at the Region meet, went to State in both events. I'm very pleased with the results of the team. The team ended the season much stronger thon I expected, said Coach Karl Pedersen, who wos ossisted by Don Jackson. Out of the six girls that went to State, two were freshman, Gina Telle and Carita Goines. Roosevelt was represented in five events in State finals where they broke four school records.
