School spirit started out a little bit slow this year, but as the year progressed it became better and better. 18 — Pepfests —4.H IIS TMA S CASKET We have reached our goal at last. A procession of students head for the YMCA. Hey! Somebody give us a hand! Every year at Christmastime students collect money and canned goods to prepare Christmas baskets for needy families in the area. Every year there is television coverage of Operation Christmas Basket. This year students gave $1,470 and 1,450 items. Ninety-three baskets were prepared. It is a nice way to say Merry Christmas. Operation Christmas Basket — 19 SAIDIE Chairperson Sherry Johnson. K. Pants tucked into boots seem to be the rage in the winter of 1978. Almost everywhere you look, you see high-heeled, knee-high boots. Another favorite is gauchos which reach down to your boot tops. Everyone who is in style has to have a sweater tied around their neck and pinned. Cowl neck and turtleneck sweaters are also very popular. That is partially because the school buildings are so cold. Events — 83 Senior Memories It seems as though it was just yesterday when we were in elementary school. We found ourselves waiting for the year to come when we would be in the sixth grade. We knew then that we were the oldest in the school and we shared the pleasures and responsibilities of being the oldest. Then it was on to junior High School where we started out at the bottom but only to find within a couple of years we were ready to share that familiar feeling of seniority once again. That summer seemed to be the longest ever as we waited for our sophomore year. New school, new friends, and getting lost on our way to class. But it wasn't long before we learned the ropes about teachers and classes here at Roosevelt. Before we knew it we were Juniors and halfway through. Things were easier and less new, but we were still looking forward to that day when we could be on top and have all the privileges the seniors had. Finally that day came. Starting in the end of August we became seniors and we were the leaders of the school. The year went by too fast. Homecoming with King Jay and Queen Mary, pepfests and the class nobody nose. Sadie Hawkins with Lil' Abner Marc and Daisy Mae Loriann and of course Operation X-mas Basket, Sno-ball, Sno-days, King Jim and vacation. Back to school only to be gone again for energy week, then spring break. How quickly everything moved. Ordering our graduation announcements and getting measured for caps and gowns made that important day closer than we realized. Then the last of our important high school events. Senior Banquet, Mayday and Prom. Where did the year go? We made it and it hardly seemed possible. So much so fast. The day was finally here. We are no longer Seniors at Roosevelt High but the graduates! B. Hester C. Sagamore Staff — 91 Pictured left to right: News Editor .........................Suzi Schultz Editorial Editor ...........Diane Pearson Managing Editor .........Diane Davidson Feature Editor ..........Jeff Godfredson Sports Editors Viva Connel, Tony Hedges The Standard is the school's official newspaper, published once a month. The staff consists of reporters, editors, photographers, business managers and a cartoonist, each with an important job to do. The editors are responsible for the layout of their pages. They have to see that all the stories are in on the deadlines and determine how long they will be. The reporters have to do the interviews, find out the facts and write the stories. When the deadline comes around, the reporters may be seen pounding away at the typewriters and asking things like: Hey Jeff, how long is this story suppose to be? SIX INCHES? Ohoh (could be trouble) I must have at least TEN! Do I get a byline on my story? The photographers have to take all the pictures. One of their jobs is the photo symposium. The business managers have to get all the ads lined up and let the editors know which ads go on their pages. The cartoonist sketches the editorial cartoon seen in every issue and may occasionally render his talents for other artwork, such as caricatures. A trip to Winnipeg in May and a farewell party at Cynthia Anderson's house winds up the year for the staff. 92 — Standard Adviser Cynthia Anderson. The class levels go from beginners to four or five-year students. The classes enjoy doing projects that help them to learn about the culture and country of their language. These projects include, making dishes from the various countries, learning some of the dances of the country and making some of the things that kids in the country would enjoy making. Hilda Karakash, French Berta Vijard, Ingrid Stojan, German Lars Kindem, Norwegian Nancy Glenn, Spanish 94 — Languages INTERNATIONAL STUDENT INTEREST CLUB Foreign exchange students at Roosevelt this year included: Liliana Silva from Chile, Richard Cockhill from England, Hans van der Valk from Belgium and Lili Machado from Brazil. Amity aides who helped out the language teachers with class as well as taking classes themselves were: Aline Berdah from France, Guillermo Moreno from Chile, and Ingrid Stojan from Germany. International Student Interest Club is a club made up of foreign students that are living and learning abroad. The club also includes students from Roosevelt who are interested in foreign study travel. This year we had students from three various programs, AFS-American Field Service, YFU-Youth For Understanding and Rotary. The club gets together for things like soccer games, picnics or parties. The parties are a lot of fun until it comes time to say good-bye. If you are lucky, good-bye is only until the next get together; but when the school year comes to an end, the students that have become not so foreign, have to go back to their countries and families. The turn-out of band members this year was terrific. Marching Band, which consisted of getting up and being to school by 7:30, had over 90 members. It was more than left-right-left my wife and forty-eight kids on the brink of starvation with nothing to eat but ginger bread. Was I right?-left right. This year was the last for the black-with-gold overlay uniform. In the spring the band received the new uniforms. Money for the uniforms was raised by the pancake brunch, Pops Concert, and selling fruit, candy, Fuller Brush products and popcorn. With rowdy leaders like John Straiton, club membership has boomed. Club was held every Monday night at the Hiawatha Y. Singing in tune to Drew Edwards' and Jeff Arundel's guitars, members boogie with everything from mellow songs to popular folk. With a little bozz truck and clapping even newcomers can get down and boogie. Some of the other rowdy leaders were Jeff O'Crady, Jan Mckenzie, Sue Watkins, Tim Lund, Luann Olson, Karen Wallberg, Mary Ungerman, Becky Gates, Amy Hen-nemann and Peggy Ring, who was also the leader for the girls' Monday night campaigners. Dale Peterson was the leader for the guys' campaigners on Sunday nights. Some of the activities throughout the year were the great Halloween Disco, slide shows, joint clubs with Southwest and the Ro-deo dress up night. To end the great year, during the summer many of the kids went up to Camp Castaway, where they could really get in touch with themselves, others and most important with God. Front: C. Abrahamson, K. It is a way of expressing their inner feelings and thoughts with words. The students spend their time reading students' poems, and deciding which will go into the magazine. A contest was held for the best short story, poem and best drawing of R.H.S. students. Under the advisory of Bea Antholz and the leadership of editor Duane Berkas the staff worked hard. This past year they paired up with the football cheerleaders and together they showed how much Roosevelt spirit they really had. While dodging basketballs and keeping the audience full of life the basketball cheerleaders did a great job. With their frozen fingers and toes the hockey cheerleaders enjoyed cheering the Teds on to all their victories, while keeping the team happy with homemade goodies. All of the cheerleaders were advised by Claude Benson. Basketball, Hockey Cheerleaders — 191 Wrestling, Sophs, Teddy Wrestling ... Early morning practices ... Decorating lockers ... The Sagamore Staff had to do it without experience, with only our adviser Mr. Krueger to help us. We had much to learn in such a short time. But we did it! I admit we did have our share of problems in that never-ending rush to meet a deadline. On more than one occasion the staff had to go over to Mr. Krueger's house the day before to finish a frantic deadline. A yearbook is a book of Top Teds. But mostly it is a memory book. That is why I hope that we have included in the 1978 Sagamore every person or memorable event that you wanted remembered. If the staff, in the great panic of a deadline, or simply not knowing the underclass, misspelled a name, switched a picture or forgot someone, we apologize. Although busy, this has been an exciting year for the staff. Have you ever tried to keep the names of the Top Teds and the cover design of the yearbook a secret? It was not easy (and not too successful either). I am sure the entire staff will never forget the screams from the darkroom. The Sagamore Staff would like to thank the faculty for having patience with us during the year. They have let us out of classes many times so we could take pictures, get names, attend workshops and other Sagamore activities. Special thanks to Ms. Jeffers, the hall monitor, for not climbing the walls every time one of us said Sagamore Staff. We would like to thank H. Larson Studios for their photographic help and patience when we called them to say we had lost the pictures they had just printed for us. Thanks also to the Standard staff for cooperating with the yearbook by lending us pictures and other help. The staff would like to thank Chuck Robinson from the American Yearbook Company for showing us how to put the Sagamore together. Most of all the Sagamore Staff would like to express our appreciation to Mr. Krueger, our adviser, for his enormous help and patience in guiding us nearly single-handedly through the successful production of this book. For next year's Sagamore Staff — good luck! We hope that you have as much fun as we did.
