At daybreak, carloads of seniors arrived at Viking Village to enjoy their breakfast and then returned to school to witness the senior girls defeat the junior girls 77-0, in the annual Powder-Puff football game. Chairpersons Sharon Ny lander and Dean Dahlgren began die auditorium by introducing die candidates - Patty Brown, Joey Freidlund, Usa Zeller, Danny Anderson, Jackie Doble, Rick Luftman, Jennifer Sevlie, Brian Anderson, Teresa Deutsch, and Reid Quamme. Drums rolled and screams of delight echoed as crowns were placed on a sobbing Teresa and an exuberant Reid. Once upon their thrones, die King, Queen and their court enjoyed the royal entertainment liefitang them. Homecoming II 976-77 Corrali in IS It is the Senior year in which one begins to realize that the distant far-in-to- the -future day when one must leave the high-school playground and take on the responsibilities of an adult is not quite so far-into-the-future . In fact, it is fast approaching. For this reason, the student, in his senior year, decides to make it his one last fling , his Best Year before venturing into the cold cruel world awaiting him. For most the years spent at Roosevelt will bring pleasant memories, though for some it well be a relief to be out of the little circus of high school . (And, alas, into a bigger one.) Oi that fateful day, as he stands, adorned in cap and gown, clinging to his diploma, he may be remembering when he first walked the halls of Roosevelt in search of his homeroom. Fresh, green, a little shakey - a sophomore. He recalls his junior year, when the novelty of high school had worn off and status of being a senior was yet to come... then his senior year, filled with special events, apprehension of what was to come AFTER high school, and the warmth of familiar faces and surroundings. All of this has gone too quickly, it seems, and each of us must go our sep-erate way. But with us we will take the memories of die happy times we shared with friends in our three years at Roosevelt. Talent, time, ambition, imagination, dedication, and an ability to enjoy some fun are all qualities of a great yearbook staff. This year's staff combined to record the 1976 - '77 school year into an annual which best portrays all the activities at Roosevelt. It's no secret that Roosevelt has the largest school in Minneapolis and consistently produces one of the best yearbooks every year. This year's Sagamore is no exception and continues the fine tradition of Being and Becoming a Ted. Since an annual is a book of pictures, the staff works with about 15,000 pictures during a year. Our photographers try to secure pictures of every activity at Roosevelt or involving our students outside the building, but on school business. The yearbook staff is assigned its own room in this building and also has a storage area adapted to be used as a darkroom. The H. Larson Studio personnel assist our staff in all phases of the photography for the yearbook, including taking group and activity pictures at Roosevelt, training our staff photographers, and supplying complete darkroom supplies. When there is a problem regarding publication details, Chuck Robinson is on 24-hour a day call and the staff often uses its private telephone for emergency assistance from Chuck. Even with all of this expert assistance and all the time invested in assembling the yearbook, deadlines are an earth-shaking experience. The staff is delighted when a deadline party is celebrated and another step forward has been taken in the great march to spring and the BIG day of our year, distribution of 1,400 copies of our yearbook. Informing the public is the biggest and foremost responsibility of being a journalist. The readers depend upon him her to relate to them what has, is, or is about to happen. They want the story to be interesting enough to hold their attention yet at the same time accurate enough that they can rely upon it. While performing his duties the journalist is actually serving the public by gathering and compiling all this information for them. He saves all his readers both time and effort. Through the experience of serving the school as a reporter one leams to communicate better with others. During personal interviews you are placed in close contact with many people and given the Job of 'finding out the facts. You lcam to be polite, tactful and concise yet always obtaining all the necessary information. You lcam to respect others and to appreciate the time and the answers they arc so willing to give. Reporters also become more observant and aware of their sunoundings. After a short time they realize they must keep their ears and eyes open or they could miss an opportunity for a story. Between papers the staff may read novels, view movies and attend press conferences. The staff normally takes a trip in the spring and ends the year with a farewell party at Mrs. Anderson's home. They decide on the lighting and help with the sound. All the special effects and heavy carrying are done by this brave team. They consider themselves brave just for being on the crew. Heavy criticism by ignorant students does not show the crew down. Such people often say, They blew it instead of, 1 can do that better. The audio visual team is headed by advisor Mr. Iverson. They are the brains behind the classroom slides, movies, and other productions. They are seldom heard and often needed. They keep all the equipment in top condition. This means doing good work in all of their classes, whether the topic is particularly appealing or not. It means taking notes and learning through class lectures, textbooks, discussions, films, term papers, guest speakers and so forth. It means getting home work done in spite of involvement in activities, such as, dramatics, athletics, cheerleading or Rock-ettes, band, choir, a part-time job, romance, river parties, television, Howard Johnson's or a car. Magnuson academics While eyes are usually pointed towards a book or a classroom lecture, one should take time to look elsewhere. Diverted eyes may find that academics is not embodied simply in words graphs and formulas. A broadened gaze will find that academics is not only read, heard and thought, but seen and felt as well. Although the program itself ran smoothly, with an Introduction of the girls volleyball team and the cheerleaders, a demonstration by the boy's gymnastic team and a dance by the Rockettes. Many faculty members were upset because of the short notice of the pepfest, and because the proper procedures were not used in preparation of it. However, the girls volleyball team was, at the time, a strong contender for participation in the state tournament and it was decided that an all-school pepfest in recognition of the girls efforts was in order. The girls went on to place third in the state tournament. The spirit of the Roosevelt student body was lively and proved to be well deserving of the long awaited pepfest. 65 «• Beginnin’ the festivities couples made ther way to coketail shindigs fer assorted delights. Involved With The Community Operation Christmas Basket celebrated its sixth year of delivering well-rounded Christmas dinners to needy families in the community. The operation collected over $97S from individual donations, along with generous contributions from Blue Tri and Student Council. All of this made possible a grand total of eighty-six baskets. The students and the faculty worked together to collect the money, sort the food, and deliver the baskets. The majority of the food went to Roosevelt families. Mr. Freeman Mclnroy, who has been the chief instagator of the operation since it began, said as far as I'm concerned, It's one of the greatest unifying factors in the school. It shows that everyone really cares. Mr. Mclnroy led yet another bcncfical project for Roosevelt student Rick Miller, who was seriously injured in a accident last summer. Raffle tickets, a pie eating contest, along with a very successful benefit dance, all went together to raise $5400. Entertainment for the dance was provided by 'CENTRE STAGE', and Brad Vat-sas, who played guitar and sang during a break. Near the latter part of the dance, the many wonderful prizes which were donated by several community companies, were raffled off. The pie eating contest was held in the auditorium. A twentyfive cent admission was the price to watch participants — Barb Baxter, Cindy Bendik, Karin Sch-luck, Mark Brady, Jose Luciano, and Ross Anderson, get smothered with whip cream. These very successful benefit projects genuinely reflect the attitudes of the Roosevelt student body. 68 Dear Roosevelt Students and Faculty: Thank you so much for everything you've done for me this past year. You don't know how lucky 1 feel, to have so many people backing me and to have so many people I can truly call my friends. Thank you again. RICK MILLER 1977 69 “Crystal Reflections” Sno-Daze 1977 70 Crystal Reflections was the theme for this years winter Sno Daze program. Co-chairpersons Linda Dreyer and Mark Rivers introduced King candidates: Randy Lathrop, Rich Miller, Jim Turner, Perry' Bjorkstrand, and Mike Bloomquist. Pop syngers sang Hey Look Me Over before King Mike Bloomquist was crowned. The Rockettes danced to The Can Can , The Chickadees bawked to In The Mood and the very Robust Flakes were swinging as they sang and danced to I Should Have Known Better . Teachers Woody Johnson and Cindy Anderson found each other in Indian Love Call and then a movie which high-lighted the program, flashed very typical, and memorable scenes of Roosevelt ... Randy Wescott presented the broomball tournament awards to the Gearheads and Knutson's Killers . Although, because of the severe cold, the traditional Sno Daze dance and basketball game had to be postponed. Crystal Reflections of Sno Daze 1977 was indeed a crystal clear success. It takes time, determination and coordination. It's the heart breakers as well as the tie breakers. It's sometimes beating yourself instead of your opponent. These demanding, tiring daily workouts are dull and tedious, but essential for good performance. When the snow flies, the team hits the slopes. Meets and practices continue through March at Hyland Hills in Bloomington. This year Captain Wade Arms ranked as number one slalom skier in the city and among the top three in the state. His young brother. Ward, only a 7th grader has been our number two racer most of the season. Skiers at Roosevelt have a fine, winning tradition which the team continued this year. The girls' ski team was strengthened by 9th grader, Mary Brown. She was the first team member to place among the top ten racers in the city this year. These hardy women skiers continued their runs down the slopes every week all winter. Sometimes the unusual frigid temperatures, the driving snows, and the gusty winds almost conquered the team, but they held out to complete the season. Debbie O'Grady shows everyone how to ski. His devotion to it was natural, for it was filled with associations of the past, with his own childhood, and with his family life, which he cherished. During the summers when he was President, it became the nation's White House. It had twenty-three rooms which had to house six spirited children and the energetic Roosevelt. He once said about life: “Life is a long campaign, where every victory merely leaves the ground free for another battle.” Theodore Roosevelt was a statesman, explorer, author, scientist and 26th president of the United Sates. His name was a synonym with honesty and reform. He had boundless physical and mental energy and was a lover of the strenous life. He was an idealist. His participation and interest in activities remained constant throughout his life. As President, he went on expeditions during his vacations. One particular bear hunt expedition became famous. He had refused to shoot a small bear that someone had captured and insisted on letting it go. An article was written about it and the Washington Post drew a cartoon. Toy makers all across the country seized the idea and the Teddy Bear was created. Theodore Roosevelt's thoughs are important to compare and apply. Such a leader in truth, a lover of live, and an enjoyer of courage, should be an example for us all. Our school upholds his name, our mascot - his love, and our yearbook - his memories. SENIOR MEMORIES Roosevelt High! When we first came as Sophomores, it seemed so big. Being lost in the halls, and getting put down by Juniors and Seniors was something everyone could understand. Our first homecoming and we did Hang Henry High . Everyone learned from, and of course enjoyed, the driving simulator. Then as we moved on up to our Junior year, we were proud that we could now put down the Sophomores. Another homecoming, and again we won, Pushing the Polars North . The Bicenntenial year we were all surrounded by Red, White and Blue. Our wrestling team took away the six year city championship from Edison and by a large margin. No one could ever forget all the wonderful things we learned in health, from changing a band-aid, to delivering a baby. And with all this behind us, we then looked forward with anticipation to our Senior year. Hurrah! Now we were on the top, the leaders of the school. We were the class president. Senior Executive Board, chairpersons for all events. Homecoming, Winter Sports Day, and May Day kings and queens. And as the days sped by so did the months, leaving us with the memory of Corraling die Cowboys , Sadie Hawkins, L'll Abner Reid and Daisy Mae Linda, and the girls volleyball team taking third in state. Then, along came Christmas, with our last two week vacation. Upon returning to school, we were brought to the realization that graduation day was steadily sneaking up on us, with the ordering of Senior announcements and the measuring for caps and gowns. As winter turned to spring, our thoughts turned toward our final days. They went by fast, taking with them May Day, Prom, and Senior Banquet. As the last few days sped by, we reluctantly turned toward graduation, overlooking the fact that along with the tears and goodbyes, we were leaving the security of one life to start another. Soon, thirteen years of school will be but a memory. A memory that will stay with us the rest of our lives. W. Nelson M. The qualities of integrity, sincerety, and efficiency were all incorpaorted to emphasize the superiority of this staff to most. The staff was hand picked by Mrs. Henningsgard and teh 1976 staff from some five hundred and fifty juniors. The experience of Mrs. Henningsgard quickly bro brought these students into a tightly knit staff who recorded the events of the 1976-1977 school year into the annual. I would like to personally congratulate the 1977 Sagamore Staffers who all served an integral part in putting together the yearbook. Each and everyone of them plunged into all sorts of unfamiliar situations to make this book one of the very finest. Thankyou for all the kindness, consideration, and cooperation shown to our staff by the faculty and students who make up Rosey Tech , H. Larson Studio, and Chuck Robinson. For with you none of this would have been possible. Mrs. Henningsgard has given us seniors, as well as the underclass many a year to remember through her classes, the Rockettes, and the Sagamore. It will surely be a proud pleasure in the future to gaze back upon our beloved high school days and see that we graduated under the never say die motto of Helen Henningsgard. It is not too often that we dedicate the Sagamore but it is much less often that an adviser with as much knowledge and respect as Mrs. Henningsgard draws, retires from the yearbook advisor position. For this reason it is with affectionate appreciation that we the Sagamore Staff of 1977 dedicate this annual to Mrs. Helen Henningsgard. Although our thoughts will soon turn to our duties as we take our positions in society, there will always be a spot in our hearts for Helen Henningsgard who made her last year as yearbook Advisor so memorable. 1977 Sagamore Staff RON STRABALA, EDITOR
