Members of the orchestra brought their music to our classrooms in a variety of ways in order to familiarize students with the role of professional musicians. This project was valued at around $13,000 which was funded by the Urban Arts program and by the Minnesota Orchestra at no cost to Roosevelt. In October the orchestra presented a concert for the entire student body. During the year, individuals and ensembles from the orchestra performed in various classes such as. Journalism. Art. English and Social Studies. They have assisted in the music department with lecture demonstrations and by playing original compositions in the music theory class. Mr. Henry Charles Smith. Associate Conductor, has been the leading figure in the program within the school and has lectured in many classes on music. With his help, the orchestra has provided tickets for Roosevelt students and faculty for every Wednesday concert at the new Orchestra Hall during the year. This fine association with the Minnesota Orchestra has greatly enriched the cultural and educational program at Roosevelt this year. Mr. Henry Charles Smith. The band was awarded a trophy for excellence. The trip also included sightseeing and concerts in Munich and Berlin, West Germany as well as Austria. Nearly a year of preparation and fund-raising went into the trip. The band parents and students worked very hard to raise the S52.000 necessary to make the trip. The answer was a resounding “Yes! . Under the watchful eyes of advisors. Mr. Tilbury and Mr. Engstrom. this year’s council has been extremely active. Student Council concentrated on improving student-community relations. This included a campaign on litter and the popular Operation Christmas Basket drive. Over 80 baskets of food were delivered to needy families throughout the area with the help of Student Council under the direction of Mr. Mclnroy. An exchange program began with other city and suburban schools enabling Roosevelt students to compare various curriculums and school activities. One of the popular activities was the first annual Dress Up Day when students dressed in costumes the last day of each trimester. Thanks to President Jeff Gipner and Vice President Dave Dahl-gren there seemed to be a renewed interest in student government. 36 Student Senate Student senate works with the student council to plan school activities. The senate meets at 8:00 every Tuesday. This year the group has been involved on projects which included Mac's Christmas baskets. Winter Sports Day and Clean-up day. Student senate also assists students who are in problems over their student rights. Jeff Gipner and David Dahlgren were the senate officers and Mr. William Tilbury served as advisor from the faculty. The standing committees were: Education, Pat Lynn. Chairperson; Extra-Curricular Activities Committee, Julie Swanson. Chairperson; Community Relations. Rose Fcdt. Chairperson. Standing [ Midthun. D. Anderson Staff Working? Is The Standard Dving? The “Standard” began the year with a major problem. Due to action by our state Legislature, fees for student activities were eliminated, this including the traditional collection of student fees for our school newspaper, the “Standard . As a result the new “Standard advisor. Ms. Cindy Anderson, plunged into two overw helming responsibilities. First, constructing and publishing the paper, and second, financing the paper. The staff followed close behind Ms. Anderson's leadership in both areas. The challenge began with subscriptions, followed by a mistletoe sale (which had a tremendous effect on human relations, here at R.H. S.), a supposedly morbid funeral march, and many genorous contributions were given to help. Therefore, with a lot of effort and a little bit of luck, we were able to enjoy our biweekly editions of the Standard”. Down to business! Dag Hammurskjold 102 The Senior year is one of panic. What to do after graduation, where to go. what must I do. and so on. There is one especially good thing and that is there arc only two required classes Social Studies and English, of course. The first centers on three modern problems: Government, where you learn of your rights and how our system w orks: Sociology, w here you are told how society is molding you to fit itself: and Economics, where you arc told of impending doom and find that we really are going to hell in a hand basket”. English, however, docs not change from last year. After these courses arc taken care of. one finds a lot of time to expand one's know ledge and sills in many areas. These courses are open to all Roosevelt students, but Seniors have more time to give to them. You can go into Home Economics where you can make your ow n clothes, fill the halls with the aroma of a master chef in Foods, or learn of life's two certainties death and taxes with muny other goodies in Nome and Family. Others find themselves absorbed into Roosevelt's excellent music program. There arc several bands and choirs to fit all talents and specializations. We also have a great Industrial Arts program with metals, drafting, wood, graphic arts, and an uuto shop where students can wreak havoc on their favorite teacher's car. Many try the language program which consists of French, Spanish. German and Norse, with each one taking a trip to their respective countries. Last but not least, you can take the mind-boggling courses of Algebra Trigonometry, Math Analysis. Physics. Human Biology and Chemistry. As we look at our Senior year, we find that it is indeed the best of the three, but there arc many different attitudes toward it. Some dread graduation with its threat of responsibility and loss of friends, and others wish it to come as soon as possible. To all the parting Seniors we say, We hope you enjoyed your stay at good of Rose) Tech, and good luck. J. Once again you're required to take Social Studies. Here you study U.S. History, and a subject which at long last is relevant to life Psychology. English is also required and there’s finally variety. You can find just the course to fit your educational needs, from Sandbox for Pleasure to Grammar, with many in-betweens like Newswriting, Creative Writing, the Growing Bible as a Source, and Speech w here you can hear speeches, naturally, from your ow n obituary, to evolution, and little green men. Gym is required for the last time this year, centering on individual sports and leadership. This time its counterpart is Health where you can hear things like Fooling around can get you in trouble and “Watch out for V.D. . while seeing things like people fainting during first aid and childbirth films. While walking down the halls one can’t help hearing the echoes w hich exist in the back of every Junior’s mind that say There's only one more year to go. J. Breedlove Sophomores .. . You are required to take three classes, with up to four electives each trimester. Social Studies is required although some students don’t know why. Here you study World History which is chock full of exciting things such as contracts, outlines, world conquest games and let’s not forget a few of those dynamic lectures. English also holds a title spot in the required classes. It has poetry and drama within its bounds w ith the highlights being the writing of your own autobiography, and everyone’s favorite, the research paper. Gym and Driver's Ed. arc also required centering on team sports like volleyball, floor hockey and gymnastics with individual strength and coordination. And who can forget our buddy, Mr. Hughes, with his “driver beware films and bedside manner? It is during this year that students usually get rid of the requirement of one year of either math or science, the two most popular being Geometry and Biology. Who can forget the thrill of completing his first proof in math, or the finding of his first amoeba under a microscope? All in all. it proves to be an interesting transition from Junior High toward graduation. 133 Me: I wonder if she'll be ready. A Night Out She: That sounds great. He: Mow about 8:00 Friday? The team was led by 4 all-city players, 2 seniors, B. Smith and G. Christianson and 2 juniors, K. Poe and S. Yeazle. The highlights of the season was our victory over Henry for the first Homecoming win in 5 years and an explosive 22 point 4th quarter to beat West on the final game. From Row: C. Schuvillcr. At the beginning it looked even worse, but with the arrival of two new varsity runners, including the team's number one runner E. Quoting one runner: The season was a real let down.” Mr. Tilbury, who has coached the team for six years, stressed the fact that it’s not that the team lacked talent but that they did not run enough during the summer. Cross country is an off-season sport with preparation as the key. That's not to say they did not work, however. They ran seven days a week, often at 6:00 in the morning. The highlights of the season were that they did work hard and improved with every meet: and Sophomore P. Another thing which took its toll, was the team's inexperience. There were only two seniors on the squad with twelve juniors, which made the '74-'75 season one of building for next year. The team which was led by coach Pat Fccly did not have a totally disheartening season, however, for they did play up to their full potential long enough to beat Wash burn which proved to be a very joyful upset for the Teds. This year's audio visual crew was kept busy ‘round the clock repairing and delivering equipment when it was needed. Besides their usual duties, they listen to the stereo. Audio visual is a class and members arc assigned to one hour of A V a day. Among their many experiences with fauty equipment, the high point of the year was when the TV broke down during ‘Father Knows Best’, and they missed it. Actually, where could we be without our loyal AV Crew - think about it! It may confuse everyone else but the Stage Crew knows how to jell lights and construct sccns for plays. They, the Stage Crew have to know the difference between a fre-suil. clipsoidal, scoop and par. The Stage Crew takes care of all lighting during our auditoriums and plays.
