RHS Becomes “Crystal Carousel” For WSD 1970 Sub-zero temperatures ushered in Roosevelt's 1970 Winter Sports Day celebrations. Various sports events were scheduled throughout the three days. The hardy seniors won the annual broomball match against the juniors and sophomores by default. The seniors were also judged most competent as all three classes braved the elements to make snow sculptures on Gowans Field. At the auditorium program on Friday. January 22. Dan Hall was crowned 1970 WSD King. Entertainment for the King and his attendants followed the coronation. That night the traditional dance ended Winter Sports Day celebrations for another year. Co-chairmen Linda Niece and Elaine Elder began the annual Blue Tri Sadie Hawkins celebration with Backwards Day on Friday, November 7th. Girls spent the day catering to their guys—driving them to school, opening doors, and carrying books. On Saturday, November 8th, Benton Hall at the downtown YWCA was transformed into Dogpatch for a night of square dancing. Senior Blue Tri members provided vegetable corsages to adorn their dates' overalls and treated them to dinner after the dance. Marryin' Sams, Gary Lewis and Freeman Mclnroy, were kept busy joining Dogpatch couples in unholy matrimony. The choosing of Daisy Mae and Lil' Abner, Roberta Holbrook and Dan Hall, completed the hillbilly festivities. 19
