Following the precedent set in 1968. activities were spread out over three days, October 1-3. The slogan was Volts are Penny Cheap , and the Teddies proved it by beating Vocational 33-0. The Coronation was held for the first time in the new gym with the entire student body present. Lissa Newberg and Steve Dahlen were crowned King and Queen amid hugging, handshakes, and applause. A street dance at the Airloha Drive-In on Wednesday night was rained out, although many people showed up anyway to stand in the rain. An auditorium on Thursday provided entertainment by the Emeralds, the Rockettes, magician Gary Tolle, and also an original skit performed by select members of the faculty. 10 MJ5, LOGAC£ Three Days of Festivities Mark 1969 Homecoming ll Breakfast, Game, Dance End Homecoming ’69 Seniors were up before the sun on Friday morning for the annual Homecoming Breakfast served in the Hiawatha Room at the Parkway Motel. Afterwards, a pep fest held on Gowans field featured the flag raising, the cheerleaders, the coaches, and a powderpuff football game complete with lovely boy cheerleaders. The football game after school was a big victory as a large crowd watched the Teds jolt the Volts 33-0. During half-time, the royalty circled the field in convertib'es. and the band and the Rockettes performed. The dance Friday night with music by Showtime I and II culminated the Homecoming activities. Thanks to co-chairman Cathy Born and Bill Brenner for the long hours and hard work they put into making Homecoming '69 successful. 12 Sa fy VanderSinden and OBi f Pftorn( er j Pam yCy ery and.Jerry Pi Ira Pont .Jones and Dave TJar tof Pa! Girls spent the day catering to their guys—driving them to school, opening doors, and carrying books. On Saturday, November 8th, Benton Hall at the downtown YWCA was transformed into Dogpatch for a night of square dancing. Senior Blue Tri members provided vegetable corsages to adorn their dates' overalls and treated them to dinner after the dance. Marryin' Sams, Gary Lewis and Freeman Mclnroy, were kept busy joining Dogpatch couples in unholy matrimony. The choosing of Daisy Mae and Lil' Abner, Roberta Holbrook and Dan Hall, completed the hillbilly festivities. 19 RHS Becomes “Crystal Carousel” For WSD 1970 Sub-zero temperatures ushered in Roosevelt's 1970 Winter Sports Day celebrations. Various sports events were scheduled throughout the three days. The hardy seniors won the annual broomball match against the juniors and sophomores by default. The seniors were also judged most competent as all three classes braved the elements to make snow sculptures on Gowans Field. At the auditorium program on Friday. January 22. Dan Hall was crowned 1970 WSD King. Entertainment for the King and his attendants followed the coronation. That night the traditional dance ended Winter Sports Day celebrations for another year. Steve Dahlen and Diane Peterson combined their efforts to make WSD a success. Elegant Couples Grace Sno-Ball The annual Blue-Tri sponsored Sno-Ball is a highlight of the school year, long anticipated by Roosevelt girls. Co-chairmen Lissa Newberg and Lynn Nyman began planning months in advance to insure the night's success. On the morning of February 21 several girls were up bright and early to transform Coffman ballroom into an appropriate setting for the formally dressed couples. Coketails started off the evening and put everyone in the proper mood. Couples then moved to Coffman Memorial Union to dance to tne music of the Infinite Set, who played mostly slow songs with a few fast numbers to liven things up. Also there was the customary long line of people waiting to have pictures taken. Later most couples dined at one of the Twin Cities' restaurants, went bowling, or attended house parties to end a memorable night. 24 25 Seniors Present “Up the Down Staircase Cast members of Up and Down Staircase discovered that playing school is hard work. The play is a comedy depicting the trying experiences that a new teacher encounters in a city high school. While rehearsing for the play, many cast members found striking similarities between Roosevelt and Calvin Coolidge High School in New York where the play takes place. The play, under the direction of Miss Sampson and student-director Jill Aldrich was presented on March 19 and 20 after many hours of memorization and rehearsal. His dog piddled on his homework! Several months of practice paid off in a thoroughly professional performance that was attended by students, faculty, and the community. The show was given twice, on February 18 and 19. and was also taped. The music centered around the theme Smile on Your Brother which was taken from the song Get Together. Many of the more popular songs of the times were presented, especially those concerning love, brotherhood, and understanding. Individual talents were spotlighted in solo performances, as well as numbers involving the whole cast. A colorful backdrop and imaginative choreography added to the impact of the show. The cast was comprised of Janet Acker, Greg Lee, Becky Arendt, Gay Grimm, Jeni Brown, Pat Thompson, Pam Thompson, Garry Anderson, Ginnie Buck, Becky Reilly. Roosevelt started the season with three relatively easy wins over South, West, and Marshall-U, but faced a tougher foe in Southwest whom they beat by one point thanks to a fine Ted defense. On Homecoming the Teddies jolted the Volts 33-0. Two key games followed, against Henry and Central, in which the team reached its peak. The showdov n came in the Washburn game. The Teddies fell in the first half before a brilliant Miller offense which scored 42 points. Roosevelt recovered in the second half, preventing further Washburn scoring, but it was too late. The Bell was lost. The coaches were well satisfied with the season and were pleased with the squad's hard work and dedicated effort, under the leadership of co-captains Steve Reiter and Mike Ramerth. Jane Fredrickson, Editor. Roberto Holbrook. Editor-in-chief. Kevin Bluml. Deboroh Griffin. Claudio Larsen. Terry Albrecht. Mr. Krueger. Lissa Newberg. We're going to have the best Sagamore ever! This is the boast most staffs make at the beginning of the year, but the 1970 staff actually hoped to achieve this goal. Starting out with $600, a new adviser in Dan Krueger, and visions of mosaic lay-outs, they hoped to turn out a Sagamore the class of 70 would remember. The small, messy room across from 227. affectionately known as the Sag Room was the scene of activity during fourth hour. There were few idle moments with pictures to schedule. rough drafts and triplicates to draw up. copy and headlines to write, and pictures to crop. In the hectic weeks before deadlines, staff members worked after school into the night, sustained by pop from the Y. Each contributed creative ideas, hard work, and long hours to produce the yearbook. When March 15th, the final deadline was over, everyone breathed a sigh of relief yet felt it was worth every minute of work to preserve some memories of the school year. 161 Standard Keeps Student Body Informed Mr. Jambeck reads over a story. Under the supervision of Mr. Toi Jambeck, the Standard staff has made quite a few changes in the school paper. The format of the second page was changed just to .get out of a rut. The Council Comments changed its name to What's Happening ... and any member of the student council could submit an articlo instead of having the Student Council president writing it every issue. In each issue a play or movie was reviewed and any student could voice his opinion in Viewpoint. Of course, there was still Personality. spotlighting an interesting student at Roosevelt. Reporters interviewed varied people during the year ranging from Hubert Humphrey and Roosevelt Alumnus Mayor Charles Stenvig to WDGY disc jockey. Scott Burton. The Standard tried to fill the role of a newspaper informing students on activities at Roosevelt while at the same time commenting on important issues and events in the world. Roosevelt's resident group of Francophiles, the French Club, is for those students who have taken or are taking French and have an interest in the French people and their culture. Through activities which are both fun and educational, members gain a better understanding of the French way of life. The annual picnic held in October by the Mississippi River featured the American fare of campfire-roasted hot dogs. Members were introduced to French cuisine at a pot-luck dinner. The Christmas party included a play, The Three Bears, French carols, and of course the club's favorite activity, eating. The banquet at the end of the year was held at the elegant Chateau de Paris at the Dykman Hotel. Germany Slides Highlight Year The German book has a lot of interesting things in it. Barb glances over today's lesson. This year the German Club has acquainted its members with the customs of the German people. Instrumentalists Show Real Talent The instrumental music department, under the direction of Mr. Johnson and Mr. Paulson, provided musical entertainment during auditoriums and athletic events. The repertoire ranged from the band’s stirring rendition of The Stripper to the mild mannered orchestra's classical music performances. The Band was a familiar sight at games and made half-time lively. Band members will remember the O-hour practices on the field on chilly autumn mornings. Both the Band and the Orchestra give several concerts throughout the year which are attended by students and others, in the Roosevelt community. The choral music department, once again under the direction of Mrs. Pauline Kolsrud, continued its fine performance this year. The choir was first heard at a Thanksgiving auditorium program, and later on in a Christmas program. The program entitled Winter Celebrations included traditional as well as modern carols. They also entertained by caroling in the halls of Roosevelt and on the Nicollet Mall. Early in the year they sang for a church service at Fort Snelling and left singing for a while to enjoy a hayride. The annual Spring Concert is a traditional highlight of the year. We have encountered disappointments and disillusionment, but also have experienced joy, and satisfaction in accomplishing something worthwhile. High school is a time of growth and learning, but it is only one of the many brief stopovers in life. The Class of 70 has spent three years at Roosevelt and will start the new decade by sayinq good bye to high school and beginning adult life. The juniors and sophomores still have time at Roosevelt but they will find this passing all too swiftly. The 1970 Sagamore is a record of the school year, and although it cannot include everything, we hope that it will preserve some memories for everyone. both the graduating class and returning students. The Sagamore Staff would like to thank the Standard Staff for their help, Jill Aldrich for the cover design, and the Roosevelt faculty and students for their co-operation and assistance. Special thanks goes to Zintsmas-ter Studios without whose help this book would not have been possible. Roberta Holbrook Editor-in-Chief Time it was, And what a time it was, It was . . . A time of innocence, A time of confidences. Long ago ... it must be I have a photograph.
