Onward . . . '‘Onward is more than the first word in the Roosevelt School Song—it means more than cheering Teddies and waving banners. It means forward motion and progress—the continual growth and development of individuals, cities, and nations. High school students are a part of this constant growth and development. They are changing and maturing, both physically and mentally. These changes prepare the individual for responsible adult living in an ever-changing world. Yes, “onward means change, both inescapable change and purposeful change; and never in life are these changes more rapid than during the high school years. Memories of these dynamic years arc many. They can’t be relived, but photography captures many of the highlights of high school life. The following two hundred twenty pages attempt to capture the onward spirit of Roosevelt High School, Minneapolis, Minnesota, during the 1959-1960 school year. In that spirit, this Sagamore represents another forward step in the tradition of fine yearbooks at Roosevelt. It contains more pages, more pictures, a different organization, a different layout, and a FABULOUS FIRST for Roosevelt . . . COLORED PICTURES. Another claim to fame is the new Introductory Section. It divides school life into four areas: individual goals, fun and festivity, achievement and success, and guidance and planning. Use of Roosevelt’s school song as a theme for the 1960 Sagamore dictates the organization of this yearbook. All sections are introduced by consecutive lines of the Roosevelt song. The beginning word “Onward , the new Introductory Section, and the use of the school song as the theme of this book combine with the events of another school year to provide a worthy record of shared memories for all persons who were a part of Roosevelt High School —1959-1960. The word “onward”, as ii applies to individual goals, signifies the growth and development of an individual. Through past centuries, it has been characteristic for people to set goals and to aim toward them throughout life. This is true also of the present generation, and will continue to be true in the future. From early childhood to adulthood there is the desire and the opportunity to set and work toward goals. Attainment of these goals will help to build successful individuals.
