CLASSES n Perhaps you have discovered by now that the theme of our 58 Sagamore is dedicated to the Minnesota Centennial. To carry this out, we have asked our famous Roosevelt Teddy Bear to lead the Minnesota Gopher through our pages. However, we have also another dedication. It is to a man who has guided 19 staffs through the process of creating a senior annual. We hope you will join with the staff in our tribute to Harvey Wagner. Mr. Wells, Dr. M. Nelson Principals Graduation Day.” This familiar phrase will always bring back memories of our high school days and the people within its walls. Two of the most important people we will always remember are our principal. Mr. Wells, and our assistant principal, Dr. Nelson. Besides supervising and managing Roosevelt they also represent the spirit and leadership that has made our school a very reputable one. For this we are very thankful and hope that by deeds, rather than words, we can show our appreciation by becoming worthy citizens and leaders in the future. D. Pommer. A. Palmquist. E. Paleen Counselors Room I I I is the magic word. In this room preside the three people, our counselors, who help us throughout our years at Roosevelt. They advise us on what course of study to follow, help us plan our vocation, give aid when seeking scholarships, and escort the Senior Honor students on an annual educational tour to Washington, D. C., and other points of interest. Besides these formal duties they also help us with our own personal problems. They represent tradition, loyalty, and friendliness at Roosevelt. To them we extend our gratitude. Faculty Co-ordinating Council Sitting left to right: M M. Holmquiit M. Erickson. J. Dahl. Chairman: M. McGrath Dr. M. Nelson. Standing left to right: O. This book is the 1958 Sagamore. There were many problems that we as a staff had to solve, as well as those each individual section had to meet. The first one. and probably the most important was the choosing of our theme. This took us about two and a half months. During this time many suggestions ranging from Sputniks to Fairy Tales were voiced. However, there always seemed to be one good reason or another for not using them. Finally we got the idea of using our Minnesota Centennial as a theme. It then took two more weeks before we could decide on all the details. After this, every section had pictures to plan and take, layouts to make, pictures to caption and stories to write so that we could turn the book over to the printer by May I. This is the product of our labors. This is a product? Well, we the 1958 Sagamore Staff think so and we hope, that in years to come, it will remind you of many happy memories. C. This is a highlight of the year for the society. Qualifications for membership are a scholastic average of 2.3 and outstanding personal qualities. The majority are initiated into the society at the beginning of the year or a ceremony where they are given their pin by an old member. The keystone and the flaming torch on the pin symbolize service, character, scholarship, and leadership. They also have activities of a social nature which include a picture party, an initiation tea, a spring supper, in addition to the trip. The members are privileged to wear a gold cord at graduation. As the name implies, the club is related to both school and the YMCA. Its purpose is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school, and community high standards of Christian character. Membership in Hi-Y is open to anyone regardless of race, color, and creed as long as he subscribes to the stated purpose. Besides regular weekly meetings, Hi-Y members participate in social activities and service projects. Club members help raise funds for school projects by operating the concession stands at home football games. During the past year, Hi-Y members participated in other service projects. C211 Blue Tri Blue Tri is an organization open to any senior girl who wishes to join. As members the girls' aims are to be better friends, better citizens, to help those in need, and have loyalty towards their school. The club consists of four chapters. Each individual chapter meets in the evening at one of the girls' homes, usually once every other week. The regular meetings with all the individual chapters are held the first and third Wednesdays of each month. The Blue Tri is the high school branch of the y.W.C.A. The organization was first organized in England in 1855. It was such a great success in England that the organization spread to New York in 1858. The first event of the Blue Tri this year was a Recognition Dinner held in the downtown building of the Y.W.C.A. The banquet was very impressive to all who attended. The Sock Hop was another of the school socials put on by the Blue Tri girls. At the dance a contest was held for the girl and boy wearing the cutest pair of socks. The girls carry on good will projects as well as their social events. The Cambridge project this year collected magazines, toys, and Pl«y hockey w,th brooms much? puzzles from the students at Roosevelt. These gifts were to be used by the children at the Cambridge Hospital. A trip to the hospital was also taken by the Blue Tri girls. On Winter Sports Day, Blue Tri challenged Silver Tri to a hockey game. The girls were dressed in the boys’ hockey uniforms. On-the-Job Training Club In February 1944. Roosevelt High School began part-time training programs in Distributive, Office, and Miscellaneous Trades. Students in Distributive training work in the distribution of merchandise such as selling and stock. The students in Miscellaneous Trades are offered an opportunity to get on-the-job training in various trades. Students in the Office program work in offices during the afternoon in the loop area. All students in the part-time training programs must take a course in Occupational Relations. Students also get one credit for working in the afternoons in addition to receiving wages for their work. Swedish This is the 29th year of the Swedish Club at Roosevelt. The members of this organization, headed by Mr. Benson, must have taken Swedish at some time during their three years in Roosevelt. This year, as in past years, the club had a skating party and met afterwards at the president's home for refreshments. Since Mr. Benson's return from Sweden, the club has taken a greater interest in the Club culture of the country. And, as a result, he hopes that this year he might make it possible for some Swedish student to study for a few months in Sweden as one student did last year. In April the club visited the American-Swedish Institute. There they saw many old paintings and antiques. After the tour, they had a smorgasbord in the basement of the building. [27] French Club One of the largest clubs at Roosevelt is the newly formed French Club. It is affiliated with the Latin Club. Under the supervision of Mr. Swadner. it was started two years ago in September of 1956. Any student who is a member of the French class or who has completed the French course may join the Society of Frenchmen. The second Wednesday of every month will find the combined Latin and French Club meeting in the auditorium. At this meeting plans are usually made for the month's social event. German Club Die Deutsche Gesellschaft is one of the oldest clubs at Roosevelt. Previously the club was open only to students with a B or better average. This year the club voted to eliminate the scholastic barrier. The first activity in the fall is the initiation of new members. Usually this takes pace at the Roosevelt y.M.C.A. The first part of the initiation is a candlelight ceremony. During this part the new initiates make a pledge in German. Afterwards there is a stunt time and refreshments. The club helps decorate the stage for homecoming and sometimes at other programs. At Christmas there is a party in the library. Someone reads the Christmas story out of the German Bible. A foreign student tells about Christmas in his land. Also there are gifts, games, and refreshments. Bottom Row: Wocstehoff, Schaak. Quist. Christianson, Clark. Neshe m, Tumma. He has accomplished the task quite well. During his first year he has conducted and planned the Christmas Concert. Spring Concert, and special school day programs. The choir has also sung for numerous church and civic programs. The A Cappella Choir practices every fourth hour. The members have a sincere desire to sing. Being chosen from Choristers, and Girls’ Choir, they must maintain high standards to remain in choir. The members as well as the school are equally proud of the choir. There are no special awards, trophies, or pins, but the real thrill comes from actually singing in the special events the Choristers participate in. Among these are the Christmas Concert. Spring Concert, whose theme this year was the Centennial, some P.T.S.A. meetings, and a few school auditoriums. A sincere desire to sing , says ’’Hutch , is the only real qualification to join. Of course, you should also be able to read notes and carry a tune ”. This mixed group of boys and girls are all competing for a chair in the A Cappella Choir. The staff is made up of students who have taken newswriting in their junior year. The best students are selected to be on the paper during their senior year. The Standard, being the only high school paper in the city to be published weekly, requires two staffs who alternate every week. This gives editors more time to plan. Up-coming school events and other recent news are covered on page one. The second page has feature stories, editorials, and other original work done by the students. Past news and activities of the various clubs are written up on the third page. All Roosevelt sports of the past, present, and the future fill the sports page. This year, however, we had to share the honors with Central and North. All three top teams finished with records of 8 and 2. Roosevelt's losses were to North and Central, both by one point margins. In district play co-captain Gary Weikle was playing with a severe back injury. In the first game of the playoffs the Teddies defeated Henry 47 to 44. Next came North. and the Teddies got revenge by beating the Polars 53 to 50. In the finals we lost to a strong Edison five, 67 to 51. Ken Erickson, Bud Bjerken, and Jerry Bergstrom were nominated to the All-City team. Erickson, Bjerken, and Reiter were the three top scorers in the city. In non-conference competition our record was 6 and I. The loss was to a hot St. Paul Johnson team. We were victorious over Warroad, Hallock, Anoka, St. Paul Harding and the Alumni. Vic Quale was sidelined during all of the regular season due to ineligibility, but was allowed to play in the state tournament. Upon entering the state tourney, our state championship hopes were crushed in the first game when we lost to South St. Paul, 3 to 2 in overtime. In the next game the Teddies defeated defending state champion International Falls, 2 to I. Miss Price said that the athletic programs in the English schools are very much like our own; except that the girls have outside field and track events much like the boys have here. The girls are very athletic minded and practically all of their extra-curricular activities revolve around athletics. Tennis is by far the most popular sport in England. Most all of the sports in which we participate in here are also enjoyed in England; although they are called by different names and have slightly different rules. This year Miss Price coached the girls' swimming and tennis teams. The golf and badminton teams were coached by Miss Wilbur. The girls on the teams find it a lot of fun participating in the sport, and this also gives them a wonderful chance to get to know a lot of girls from other schools. A very exciting girls’ volleyball tournament was held this year. The girls make up their own teams consisting of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The champs played the champions from other schools. The second semester this year a special gym class was formed for any senior girls who wished to be in it, and who had third period free. They had their choice of what they wanted to do. The girls have always had a very good variety of activities in the 9ym. Football, volleyball, baseball, basketball and deck tennis are among the team sports. There are round-robin contests in each grade. After each grade champion is known, there is a playoff between the grades to determine a school champion. This year, however, the comple- tion of the games had to be called off as the basketball team needed the gym for practicing. The finalists in each grade were as follows: IOth grade, 206 and 320; I Ith grade, 103 and I 13. 219 and I 18. The seniors had not yet reached the finals. [68] Baseball 1957 Weak hitting and a weak defensive infield kept the Teddies from going very far in the 1957 baseball season. They ended up with 3 wins and 5 losses in the Southern Conference. Four of the five losses were by only one run. In non-conference games we won 4. lost 3, and tied 2. The highlights of the season were our two games against Washburn, who became city champion. In our first meeting, Ron Johnson pitched a one-hitter in eight innings to win I to 0. The second contest, however, Ron lost 3 to 2 in fifteen innings. Throughout the season our pitching by Johnson and Weikle was outstanding. But it seemed as though Jerry Bergstrom was the only hitter who had his eye. He finished with an average of about .500. Hank Gallagher was captain last year. Jerry Bergstrom will inherit Hank's duties for the 1958 baseball season. Prospects for the 1958 season are bright. In pitching we have returning letterman Weikle and Keith Armstrong, a junior. Bergstrom and Standing will complete the battery. The infield should be strong, commented Coach Dale Mielke. Central took the city championship. Tennis has two doubles teams and three singles players. One point is given for the player who wins his match. Then the team with the most points wins. Mr. Skaurud will have a very young team this year although there are three returning lettermen. Dave Ehlen will play number one singles spot with the rest of the positions filled by underclassmen. Equipment Managers Each year thousands of dollars worth of equipment is used by our athletic teams. It is the job of the equipment managers to see that it is issued and that it is returned again at the end of the season. If at any time repairs are necessary, the managers must do it or see that it gets done. All the teams here at Roosevelt owe Mr. Riemcnschneider and the equipment managers a vote of thanks. If any boy is interested in being an equipment manager, he may see Mr. Riemen-schneider in Room 223 and see if he can qualify. 1958 Equipment Managers J. Olson. G. Johnson. L. All our matches were played at Hiawatha Golf Course. The matches are for 18 holes and are scored on a hole by hole basis. In the 1957 state matches Rolf Deming, defending state champion, went on to capture the state title a second time. Rolf was only a junior, so he is back for the 1958 season. This year's team will lose only one letterman to graduation. Rolf Deming is the 1958 Captain. Courtney helpt Grenier line up putt si Pctcrtcn holdi the flag. Front Row: b M Johnton, L. Grant R. Although Roosevelt failed to Spill the Millers , the day was one of festivity beginning at 7:50 a.m. with the traditional flag raising ceremony on the football field. The schedule for the day featured many new and different ideas including two auditorium programs. The big homecoming dance was held from 10:00 to 11:45 p.m. following the Roosevelt-Washburn game, and for the first time here at Roosevelt a sunlight dance, which attracted many Roosevelt fans, was held after school in the gaily decorated lunchroom. Several alumni cheerleaders were on hand for the afternoon pep fest, featuring numbers by the dance band, Rockettes. an acrobatic dance by Dawn Lembecker. and a ballet dance by Lorraine Holscher. Robin Hood hats and maroon and gold pom-pons populated the Parade Stadium in the evening as the Teds clashed with the traditional rival, Washburn. THc Dance Band plays at the Homecoming Dance. Winter Sports Day Winter Sports Day is, according to tradition, one of fun and excitement for all. This year was no exception. The festivities officially opened with a bonfire held the night before. On hand to light the huge pile of Christmas trees were the five king candidates. The students standing in a circle around the fire sang winter songs and with the leadership of the cheerleaders and the Teddie Bear did cheers. The king candidates were also interviewed and they all agreed that this year's Winter Sports Day would be remembered as one of the best in a long time. As school was dismissed on January 17 at 1:15 p.m., the students and teachers lined up behind the One of the Vulcans watching the launching of the locket. The Rockhcadi thow their form on the ice. Once at Sibley, the Rockheads, a senior boys' skating line, soon appeared and with them the four Vulcans whose identity is kept secret. Adding variety to the program was the launching of the rocket the X-WSD. The rocket was new this year and although it did not head for outer space it added to the fun of the day. Finally, the moment everyone had been waiting for arrived—the crowning of the king. Pat Wilson, the 1958 Aquatennial Queen of the Lakes was the celebrity who had this honor. Slowly she walked back and forth in front of the five candidates: Mike Eng, Jim Gillian, Bennett Melin, Chuck Pollock and Dave Schreiner. As she placed the crown on the head of Chuck Pollock the clapping and cheering of the crowd showed everyone agreed with the choice. King Chuck reigned over the Blue Tri-Silver Tri hockey game which the Blue Tri won and also the Alumni-Varsity hockey game which the Varsity won 7-6. We look forward to the fun of starting out on our own, yet we hate to leave Roosevelt and all the wonderful friends we have made. Pictured here are the Top Teds picked to represent the senior class. The job was a difficult one as there were so many who qualified for any one of these titles. In our class of 1958 we surely have had a swell bunch of kids to carry on the Roosevelt banner. His dream reveals to him the probable consequences in scenes such as the marriage scene where he strolls down the aisle to take place in a ridcu-lous wedding ceremony. In desperation, Neil kills the entire Cady family with his paper knife, and of course, he had to be put on trial for it. However, the ending came through in true Hollywood style and Neil is reconciled with his true lover. Junior Executive Board This year's Junior Executive Board consisted of a member from each junior homeroom, the junior class officers, and Mr. Dahl, their adviser. Together they and the P.T.S.A. planned the Junior Class Party using the theme, Frost Frolic. It was held January tenth in the school lunchroom from 7:00 to I 1:00 p.m. Another event planned by the executive board was the junior prom, which was to many an evening of sheer delight and fantasy. It was held at the Pick Nicollet Hotel, May 16. from 8:00 to 12:00 p.m. Billowy formals, soft pastels, delicate flowers, pressed suits, crisp shirts, polished shoes, and soft dreamy music highlighted the evening. This was an evening which will remain in the memories of our future seniors forever. This was the third year that a junior prom was held. It is becoming one of the traditional events for juniors to look forward to at Roosevelt. Sophomore Executive Board A representative from each of the thirty sophomore homerooms, the sophomore class officers, and Mr. Benson, their adviser, comprised the l957-’58 Sophomore Executive Board. This year their most important project was planning the Sophomore Class Party, the Satellite Swing. It was held Friday, November 15, from 7:30 to I 1:00 p.m., in the school lunchroom. The lunchroom was gaily decorated and created the illusion of being out of this world. A large foil covered satellite was placed in the center of the lunchroom and was surrounded by balloon satellites and stars. Regular school clothes were worn, with an accent on clashing colors to help carry out the satellite theme. Refreshments were served and all enjoyed a carefully planned party — thanks to the executive board and the P.T.S.A.
