It's been great. Problems? Well, we have really had our share. In fact, if we were to lay these problems in a straight line, they'd reach from here to Wisconsin; but the biggest one of all (the one you'd notice first) would be that one of choosing a theme. Let us tell you how it happened. There we were one beautiful fall day. all 16 of us and Mr. Wagner, our adviser, beating our brains out trying to decide upon a very special theme for, what we considered, a very special dass. We had just about thought of everything (or so we thought) when someone suggested using the theme of different postage stamps. Or how about different kinds of money? another voice added. Well, from then on it went something like this— You mean counterfeit money? Like in Dick Tracy. Oh, so you want a comic strip! joked Mr. Wagner. No one spoke. A dead silence came over us and the room has never been that quiet since. Then, all of a sudden Joyan Fournier yelled. Peanuts!! —and she was immediately followed by a loud chorus of yes's . . . and so it was. During this past year, keeping our theme a secret and guarding it has almost become a religion with each of us. Anyone who has come to the Sagamore room, 214, during fourth period will tell you that! Rather than try to tell you all about our book, we hope it speaks for us. We sincerely want you to like it because, for us, this is a happy dream come true. Student Council The Student Council is one of Roosevelt's most important organizations. The Council is composed of one representative from each homeroom, and is under the able leadership of Mr. Strandjord. The three most important and most popular events of the year—Homecoming, Winter Sports Day, and the Spring Dance—are sponsored by the hard-working Council. At the end of each year, an award is given by the Council to the student who has contributed the most to the school. Ethics Committee: Christy. Kahn, Hrkal. Rataczak, J. Carlson. Mickelson. It is also the only weekly high school paper put out in Minneapolis. The Staff does everything from gathering information, writing stories, and taking pictures. to actually setting up the paper at the printers. In order to be a member of the staff, a student should have taken at least one semester of newswriting, and have the ability to write feature, sports, or straight news stories. 1956-57 Standard Staff Editors-in-chief Bob Fredrickson Cynthia Kersten First Page Editors . . .Judy Newfield Patricia Benesh Second Page Editors Mary Wiencky Mickey McMannus Third Page Editors Marilyn Moberg Ruth Johnson Sports Page Editor Gary Phillips Photographers John Petterson Jim Alinder Sports editors and photographers compare ideas Petterson. Silver Tri What is the largest club at Roosevelt? Silver Tri of course. Membership is open to any sophomore or junior girl who wishes to help others, and build her own personality and citizenship. There are more than 300 members in this group. Silver Tri is divided into ten chapters meeting jointly the first Tuesday of each month. Individual chapters meet on the third Tuesday of each month. The girls are under the direction of Miss Wiest and Mrs. Liljedahl who supervise and aid the girls whenever necessary. Besides electing a president, vice-president, and secretary, they also elect an Interstate Club Council representative. This council shares its ideas and opinions to help the Silver Tri organizations benefit from the experiences of others. This year, as usual, they have been a very active club. As in previous years, Silver Tri sponsored the winter formal, Sno Ball , which was held at the Glenwood Chalet. The club has invited speakers to attend their meetings to talk on proper dating. Also, during the year, a model talked about good grooming and etiquette. Besides having Bottom row: Fabel, Miss Wiest. adviser; Cameron, DuBeau, Hagberg. Groth. Fitz. Blue Tri Blue Tri, that’s for me, exclaim all senior girls who wish to belong to an organization whose main goal is to strengthen citizenship and become better friends to all. This high school organization is a branch of the V. W. C. A. and is made up of four chapters. The individual chapters meet once every other week at different girls' homes. Under the guidance of Miss Haberman, the club meets every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, and the cabinet meetings are held on the first and third Wednesday of each month here at Roosevelt. During the fall the Blue Tri sponsored the first dance of the year—the all favorite Sock Hop. At this memorable dance a contest is held in which a guy and gal with the most novel socks are awarded a prize. Besides this first event they also sponsored Cupid's Capers, a Valentine Dance. Other projects were selling teddy bears to Roosevelt students, presenting a Christmas Program at the Citizen’s Club as a service project, setting up a booth at the International Fair, portraying the country of Greece, and playing a Bottom row: Bcrgquist. Hi-C Picnics, hayrides, sports activities, a spring reception for the parents, and a senior farewell are some of the activities which characterize the sincere fun the Hi-C members enjoy. This club, organized in March, 1939, is under the competent leadership of Mrs. Kaupang. A large meeting is held every Tuesday from 3:00 to 4:00 at the Roosevelt y.M.C.A. Although the only requirement for membership consists of merely going to Roosevelt, high ideals and goals should be present in all members. The aim of the club is to build character, promote high ideals, train members for leadership and develop their talents. The club is part of a city-wide organization which annually awards trophies, thus making all members eligible to take part in city-wide activities such as week end retreats, formal and semi-formal banquets, and musi-cales. Members are encouraged to participate in outside activities as well as in school affairs. Bottom row: Ellwood, Wahl. BETTE HAMILTON. CORRESPONDING SECRETARY; Carsbcrg. D. Olson. Shdstad. King. D. Captain elect The Drill Team The Drill Team, under the direction of Mr. Swanson, is a new organization at Roosevelt this year. The girls who march in the Drill Team meet the fourth hour, where they work hard practicing the different formations and drills which they perform. These girls have added much interest to the half-time entertainment at football and basketball games. Swing Band One of the hardest working organizations is our own Swing Band that plays for all our school dances and several of our pep fests and auditoriums. The band is supervised by Mr. Henning and meets on Wednesday nights. All of the members are capable and devoted musicians and work hard to make the student body proud of them. Bottom row: Bergman, C. State championships in both football and basketball provided the biggest thrills this year. These two victories and our other sports accomplishments were due in a large part to the tireless efforts and the coaching skill of our sixteen coaches. Jerry Sullivan and Al Gowans, our two veterans of football, helped bring home the honorary state championship with an undefeated team. The hockey team, under coach Bob May, was edged out of first place in the city by one goal, while our undefeated basketball team rolled on to its second state victory in a row. The many long hours spent by Mr. Courtney and Mr. Blake in perfecting the team into the smooth and polished machine it was, paid off well. Ken Peterson's always strong gymnastics team finished second in the state. Our swimming team under the watchful eye of Mr. Jambeck placed third in the city after having won the city title five times in the last seven years. The spring sports of track, baseball, tennis, and golf all show promise of being top contenders for the city titles. Mr. Mielke took over the position of baseball coach which Mr. Courtney formerly held. As usual Mr. Eggan acted as faculty manager and Mr. Riemenschneider performed with his usual effciency from the equipment room . C 50 ] Girl : R. Case. M. Lucey, D. Christianson. J. Adler. Boys: M. Cheerleaders Peppy, bouncy, faithful, energetic, untiring,—add those words together and you have a pretty good description of our very active cheerleading squad. Headed by their captain, Mike Keller, and their coaches, Rosemary Shanus and Fred Lundquist, this year's squad included Rosann Case, Steve Nelson, Debby Christianson, Dave Eckholdt, Judy Adler, Carl Jackson, Mary Lucey, and Rusty Brokaw. Always prepared with a new and entertaining pep-fest for game days, they gave many performances which will long be remembered. Carrying on their wonderful spirit next year will be John McCullen, Virginia Effertz, Craig Sampson, Barb Walling, Ron Anderson, Joanne Johnson, Nancy Hill, and the only returning junior, Rusty Brokaw. It was their job to see that all equipment was kept clean and in good repair at all times. Then, at the end of each sports season, it was their duty to round up all equipment and store it until next year. For their efforts they each get an athletic letter. Skiing This year's ski team got off to a late start because of a missing factor. That factor was snow! The two meets scheduled for December had to be cancelled. Dale Johnson, the ski team's new coach, helped by the co-captains, Doug Wenborg and Dick Steen, led the boys to a third place position in the city and to a sixth place position in the state. Girls' Leaders Dependability is the biggest and most important word in a girls' gym leader's dictionary. These girls have to be dependable because so much authority is left in their hands. Girls' leaders are in that job in the first place because they want to be, not because they were assigned. In the second place, of all the girls who volunteered. Rae Wilbur picked the ones she wanted for her assistants. Special classes are held during the first semester of their junior year to train them to become leaders. There they are taught how to take care of equipment and help teach classes. They learn how to keep attendance records, and in their training period they referee one day a week after school for intramural tournaments in basketball and volleyball. When a girl finally becomes a leader, one of the first things she does is help give out locks and assigns lockers. Rae makes sure that her classes respect her leaders because often she is called out and must leave her girls in charge. Anyone for tennis M. Murphy, M. Mills. Girls' We were very fortunate this year in having with us a foreign exchange teacher in the physical education department. Mrs. Eiro-wen Ramm hails from London, England where she usually teaches at a girls' school. Shirley Price our own representative went to England in Mrs. Ramm's place. They both found teaching in a friendly foreign country very interesting since many of the customs are quite different. Mrs. Ramm coached our girls' swimming team which took third place in the city competition. She also taught our modern and folk dancing classes and added English, Scottish and Irish dances for a variety. They don't have girls' leaders to help teach in England and Mrs. Ramm was surprised to see all of the authority placed in these girls. Among some of the subjects she taught besides modern and folk dancing were team sports, individual sports and first-aid. Two important Roosevelt productions, the United Nations Show, and the Scandinavian Festival would not have been possible without her assistance. B. Coolc straddles horse. Rae shows fine form on side straddle while M. Erickson stands by if needed. £74: Sports We all grew to love Mrs. Ramm because she is such an energetic person who makes friends with every one who comes in contact with her. We hope she enjoyed her stay at Roosevelt as much as we did and we will miss her very much since she is returning to England in August. We will also be eagerly looking forward to the return of Shirley Price. Newcomers are always amazed at the variety of sports and games taught in gym. As sophomores, they are taught a mixture of everything. As juniors, they have their choice as to which class they want to belong. There are team sports for the girl who likes basketball and volleyball. For a diversion they sometimes work on apparatus and the trampoline. Modern dance is interpretive dancing and takes a certain amount of rhythm and skill. Folk dancing consists of square dancing and others which have been favorites for many years. Seniors are not required to take gym but they do take first aid. This is an interesting and important subject which is very useful to everyone. We learn by doing: K. Nelson, Yarwood, Wilbur. [75: (VQ.Q_.D-— t CANDIDATES: Carol Hanson Barb Asmus Mary Mills Dcbby Christianson Homecoming To the thrilling notes of Pomp and Circumstance, the 1956 Roosevelt Homecoming attendants marched down the aisle in a suspense filled auditorium. This was the height of anxiety that had been building up for days and weeks. Slowly they were announced, and slowly they came toward the stage. The attendants were Debby Christianson, Steve Nelson, Mary Mills, Dave Eckholdt, Carol Hanson, Mike Keller, Barb Asmus and Jim Keely. Suddenly there was a thundering crash of applause as Sharon Lieberg and Tom Nordland appeared in the doorway attired in their royal robes. They were received by joyous cheers from their fellow students and officially crowned by our principal Mr. Wells and assistant principal Miss Nelson. Sharon and Tom ruled in state throughout the day and evening, making it a day of fond memories for every Roosevelt student. Queen Sharon Lieberg. A Queen is chosen. Steve Nelson Jim Kecly Dave Eckholdt Mike Keller 1956 Everyone was out of bed a little earlier than usual on Homecoming because of the traditional flag-raising ceremonies before school. Teachers and students alike joined with the band and the cheerleaders in the Star Spangled Banner and our own Roosevelt Rouser. The auditorium program is always good on Homecoming Day and this year was no exception. Alumni from years gone by were here to compare performances. Miss Sand-boe handled the directing, the German Club decorated the stage, and the entire school enjoyed it. Our slogan for this year was Rip the Polars Bare. which is exactly what we did by beating North 48-0, in a thrilling football game. After the game everyone rushed home to prepare for the dance which is always the conclusion of a truly glorious day. King Tom Nordlond Our King is crowned. Proudly we hail Congratulation Sharon! Probably the gayest room in school was the lunchroom. Something new was added this year that we hope will continue for years to come. That was music for the lunch hour provided by our wonderful Swing Band. They played lots of novelty numbers, such as the Mickey Mouse song which everyone joined in singing heartily. Someone provided our candidates with huge chocolate ice cream cones from the Ritz. Toward the end of the period huge lines of Bunny-Hoppers helped clear away the tables and chairs from under the beautifully decorated ceiling to make everything in readiness for the dance. Ice Parade: Roosevelt Students Winter Sports Day The date—Jan. 24 The place—Roosevelt High School The time—All day This may sound like the beginning of a murder trial to you, but it s not. It s just my way of telling you about Roosevelt s biggest winter affair of the year, our own Winter Sports Day. On this day al! troubles are forgotten and everyone has fun. When we enter school, we find everyone in a carnival mood. The teachers all dress in their sports clothes, and the students usually can be found standing around in various groups singing Winter songs in a gay mood. This year something new was added, at various times during the day vulcans appeared; they helped to enliven the day, and added a true carnival touch. When one o'clock finally arrived the school emptied in a hurry, and the students began lining up for their grand march to Sibley Field, where the crowning and festivities would take place. In the parade were an army tank, and trailer in which the swing band played. Various other cars carried the Royalty, the cheerleaders, and teachers. Down at the park everyone waited anxiously for our celebrity Leo Rancho Carillo to crown the King. He walked back and forth slowly—who would it be—finally he stopped and with his sombrero crowned our 1957 Winter Sports Day King, Ron Johnson. There were screams of approval, and congratulations for our new King and his attendants. Ron Eikaas, Gregg Larson. Terry Baxter, and L. L. Hester. r Cheerleader Dances with Mascot: R. Case, K. Erickson. After the crowning Ron rode among his subjects while they did the Hokey Pokey and Bunny Hop to keep warm. Entertainment was provided by a girls’ figure skating line. There was also a boys’ dance line which turned out to be a real comedy. The gladiators for the day consisted of a broom-hockey game between the Blue Tri and Silver Tri. It was a close game, but the Silver Tri won with a score of 2-0 Included in the festivities were an apple race and a treasure hunt; the prize of which was $10.00. At the end of the day we made our way back to school for the big Winter Dance. It was the perfect ending of a perfect 1957 Winter Sports Day. King and Attendants: R. Eikaas, G. Larson, T. Baxter, L. Taking a good look around the halls of Roosevelt, we see many Top Teds that will be remembered for years; whether it be their eyes or their smile; their talk or their style. Every year we have many students that qualify for each one of the categories. The students pictured on this page were chosen as representatives of the senior class and will reign as Top Teddies for 1957. We feel the decisions were made wisely. C 85 3 THURSD FRIDAY Art Class Advertises Pygmalion in School Show Case. Class Play A fine cast, a fine performance describes the 1957 Senior Class Play, Pygmalion. This popular comedy by George B. Shaw is the story of Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl. In the play Eliza is the object of a bet between two professors of speech. One believes that in three months time he can raise Eliza from the status of a flower girl to a duchess by correcting her speech. The other feels this feat is impossible. Under the able direction of Miss Pauline Sandboe, the students portrayed the characters very well. Authentic costumes were rented for the play. The scenery was painted by our own art students. All this, with a lot of hard work, made this year's play one of the best in Roosevelt's history of class plays.
