Librarians and Clerks Our school life revolves around the library. We rely upon the library for aid in completing assignments; while it is necessary to the faculty to help construct an accredited education for us. The librarians assist us in gaining the knowledge for using the library wisely. One of the main duties of the office clerks is the keeping of all records for the students. Aside from their regular duties they also assist the administration and cooperate with the faculty whenever needed. Z' 1 Faculty Coordinating Council This council is made up of twelve faculty and administrative members who act as an advisory body. The meetings are held the first Monday of every month and are open to other interested faculty members. They study problems presented by the Administration. With Roosevelt’s splendid teachers this can easily become a pleasure rather than a chore. Our social studies department has been especially active in many of our school functions this past year. History taken in Sophomore and Junior years are world history and American history, respectively. Modern Problems replaces the history courses in the Senior year. This deals largely with the functions of the government, civic and everyday problems such as low income group, buying and selling, and crime prevention. Common Learnings may be taken if desired during the Sophomore year. [12] Science R. BLAKE: Physics. Assistant Basketball Coach. Sophomore Football Coach. A. W. BUCKMAN: Chemistry, Biology. The courses offered are: Biology, the study of plant and animal life: Physiology, function of the human body: Physics, the law of nature: Chemistry, the science of materials and their compositions. Students plannins to enter college need science in their academic course. It is also of extreme importance for students who wish to enter fields of medicine, engineering, etc. Modern Problems can be interesting as well as educational. Felber, Smallcn, Gowans. This department is staffed with skilled teachers who enable us to gain the most from these courses. It is advisable for everyone to have some experience in one of these courses before graduation. Home Economics, for the girls, prepares them for later life especially after marriage. Foods consists of learning to prepare meals, nutrition value, planning menus, and etiquette of serving and eating. Clothing includes sewing, personal appearance, planning economical wardrobes and styling. The boys' industrial courses are equally important in their preparation for later life. Among the courses are: auto mechanics, cabinet making, machine shop, mechanical drawing, agriculture, wood turning, and printing. C 16 3 Ahlquist, Vclenty. Guderian, chief engineer: Snider. Mellen. They are here when we arrive in the morning and remain on the job after we leave in the afternoon. The cooks make it possible for the students to have a hot nourishing lunch each day. Many of us never really get to know these behind the scenes people: yet they contribute much to Roosevelt and deserve credit. Moe. Olafion. Lundquist. Johnson. Mickclsen, Long, W cklem. The Sagamore is the result of a lot of hard work, quarreling, and fun. We hope you will enjoy your '56 Sagamore as much as we have enjoyed producing it. At the beginning of the year we picked our theme and started work on the cover. At the same time we started filling in the pages. Layouts were planned, pictures were scheduled and taken, and stories were written. Mr. Wagner, our adviser, supervised our busy activities. We also sold book covers designed by our staff artist. When the lay-outs were completed it was packed off to the printer and the presses started rolling. Then the Sagamore came back to 214 to be proofread. The corrected copy was sent once again to the printer. This is the result—your '56 Sagamore. Here's hoping it will always be a happy reminder of your school life and the wonderful school spirit at Roosevelt High. BERNADETTE BONIN PAUL CARLSON RON THORSON MERRY QUINN Bottom row: MIKE ROAN. Well . . . yes. Anyone and everyone that's wise 'round these parts keeps pretty well informed on Silver Tri. Oh, well, I'm sorry then. But tell me, isn't that the club that's responsible for our successful Christmas party and Cupid’s Capers Valentine Dance? One and the same. And aren’t they the ones who helped give a Christmas party for children at the Citizens' Club and then held a bake sale to raise money for gifts for them? And didn't they sponsor an annual membership banquet and our Winter Formal? Righto! Say. how do you . . . Weren't they the ones, too, who sold those beautiful corsages at Homecoming? The emblem is an inverted triangle which is the symbol of ' Y Teens. The club was divided into chapters one, two, three, and four. Once every other week you would be able to find each individual chapter meeting at one of the girls’ homes. The club as a whole met at school once a month. Among the first of the Blue Tri activities was the Recognition Banquet which was very impressive. It was held at the downtown YWCA. During the football season, the girls played their own game. Each girl was dressed in a boy's uniform. including helmets and shoulder pads. A variety show was given at the Citizens’ Club for underprivileged children. Blue Tri also sponsored a Sock Hop which was very successful. Everyone came wearing cleverly decorated stockings. Other activities of the Blue Tri members included Christmas caroling, the Iduhapi winter party, and service on committees for the Bottom row: Vagasky MARILYN MATTSON. VICE PRESIDENT: JUDY BJERKEN. Aside from their popcorn project the Sportsmen's Club is very busy with other aims and activities. The chief aim of the club is to promote better sportsmanship. They also seek to learn the fundamentals of sports, aid in prevention of forest fires, help to conserve the wild life of our country, and participate in a study of nature. Any boy or girl who is willing to help further these aims is eligible for membership. The Sportsmen's Club is under the leadership of Mr. Riemenschneider. In Room 222 on every other Wednesday they meet to make plans for their future activities. One of the first activities of the year was a picnic. This club, under the direction of Mr. Eggan, has the distinction of being almost as old as Roosevelt High itself, as it was started in 1926. Among the many social activities in which the Norse Club participated this year were the initiation of new members, a wiener roast, their annual Christmas party, and the Senior Farewell Banquet. The club pin consists of the Norwegian Coat of Arms in maroon and gold. The highest honor that a member of the Norse Club can achieve is to be awarded the trophy that is given each year. The outstanding qualities of the member chosen to receive this trophy are character, general scholarship, and progress in Norse. C37] Hi-C To be a member of Hi Crusaders requires just one thing—the signing of a membership card. But it is through its members that Hi-C's high ideals are promoted and its leaders trained. Students are given opportunities to develop their talents through service and participation in programs, Red Cross and hospital work, and through many other activities. Besides the club's own social activities, members are eligible to take part in many citywide activities such as week-end retreats, banquets, musicals, ski events, and other social gatherings for good Christian fellowship and fun. The Choir has given many performances this year. Among them were the annual Christmas Concert, the annual Spring Concert, and Baccalaureate. Girls' Choir One of Roosevelt's newer organizations is Girls' Choir. This choir has much to be credited for. This year, under the leadership of C. Wesley Andersen, they sang for both our Christmas and Spring concerts. Everyone at the Christmas Concert agreed that the girls looked like dolls in their red and white gingham checked outfits. They also sang for other engagements. If you were to pass Room 31 3 any day of the week during sixth hour, you'd most likely hear the girls singing their hearts out— that is, all except for the first fifteen minutes. Then you'd probably find them practicing breathing. The girls know proper breathing is a must for good singing. As one member nicely sums it up— We're just one big happy family. Their colorful and bouncy performances kept all the spectators in their seats during the half-times. These and other successful performances were preceded by a lot of persistent hard work and rehearsing. The girls were directed in their various routines by Mr. A. L. Swanson. In addition to their State Tournament appearances. they were on hand at all of the football and some of the basketball games and were a fine example of the spirit of 56. Band The Roosevelt Concert and Marching Band is one of the most important organizations in our school. Under the leadership of Oren Henning the band gave concerts and performed for auditorium programs. The Marching Band presented sparkling half-time entertainment for the home football games. They were also on hand to play for several of the basketball and hockey games. The band is a necessity to our school life and we couldn't do without the music they provide for the many activities throughout the year. Orchestra The Roosevelt High School Orchestra, under the direction of Albert L. Swanson, is one of the few symphonic organizations in the state. Among the many activities for which the Orchestra performed were Homecoming, The Talent Show, the Carnival, and the allschool and senior class plays. Each year the Orchestra gives awards to the most outstanding musician, the most valuable musician, and the player who has made the most progress. Our orchestra is one of the finest in the state. Coaches This year because of a terrific coaching staff we had an excellent record. We should be very grateful to these fellows who give their time as well as their enthusiasm to the various teams. This year we had two new coaches; Bob May, who coached football and hockey, and L. G. Swadner, who coached baseball. In the fall cross country took city championship and the football team had a 3 win. 4 loss record. The winter sports record was very good with the basketball team taking the State title for the first time in Roosevelt's history. The hockey team got into the semi-finals of the State tournament, but lost to Interna- tional Falls in a heartbreaking game with three overtimes. The final score was 3 to 2. The C class in gymnastics took second in the State and went undefeated through the city conference. The D class in gymnastics took second and the B class took fourth. Also, the swimming team was undefeated in the city. The wrestling team placed themselves in the third slot. The skiing team took second place in the city. The spring sports will be too late for publication, but we are hopeful for more championships. Baseball will have a very good chance in going a long way with 7 lettermen returning to the squad. The golf team also should be right up near the top. Top row: E. Haynes. Track: T. W. Jambeck. Swimming: R. H. May. Football. Hockey: D. E. Mielke. Football Hockey, Base ball: K. M. Peterson. Cross Country The 1955 City Cross Country Champs upheld the fine record of previous teams. In defeating Southwest they succeeded in capturing the city title. The Thinclads remained undefeated through the entire city competition. Probably the biggest reward of the season was defeating Southwest by 28 to 30. This is the first time Southwest has been defeated in dual meet competition since 1951. The Teds placed the following seven men in the city meet: Gary Reme, John Granoien, Al Erickson, Dave Ross, Earl Dahlberg, Orv Fenstad, and Dan Denham. Mr. Yngve and Dave Ross, next year's captain elect, will have quite a job of rebuilding to do with only one returning let-terman. With lots of hard work and good spirit, however, the Teddies should be near the top again next year. •Denham, Dan •Granoien, John •Remc, Gary Lettermen Dahlberg, Earl Erickson, Allan Fenstad, Orval Koldcn, Dean Ross. After losing the first game to Central 19-6. the Teddies bounced back to defeat the North Polars 34-7 in an impressive victory. John Hrkal was named lineman of the week for his brilliant fumble-recovery which scored the first touchdown against the Polars. Our Homecoming game was as successful as the day's activities when we toppled Vocational 20-0. Dave Kahn was sitting on the bench most of the season as a result of a knee injury but still continued to kick extra points. Lee Vickers took Dave's center position and did a great job. Coach Jerry Sullivan says: the prospects for next year look very good because most of the lettermen this year were juniors. The '56 team will be headed by co-captains Ronald Eikaas and John Hrkal. Then the team started to roll, gaining one victory after another until one night they met Washburn and lost by one point. This was all the Teddies needed to start playing good basketball. They ended in the city conference in first place. In the District Tournament Roosevelt defeated West and North and in the finals met Washburn. Remembering their defeat earlier in the season the cagers drubbed the Millers with the score ending 91-50. Next came the Region 5 Tournament with Roosevelt against Willmar. Some people said whoever won this game would probably go all the way in the state. The Teddies squeezed by Willmar beating them by three points. The following night the Rough Riders breezed by St. Louis Park and then for the first time in Roosevelt's history got into the State Basketball Tournament. The next evening they were scheduled against New Prague who had the most talked about boy in the Tournament in the person of Ron Johnson. Roosevelt did a beautiful job in keeping his points down and won by 17 points. The following evening Blue Earth was their opponent and now the Teddies had reached their peak. It started out to be an exciting game, but Roosevelt’s ability and strength started to pay off and they kept playing good ball until the score at the final gun was 101-54. They set three records that night—the national record which was originally 97 points, the three game record with 250 points and the individual game record which was originally 91 points. At the end of the State Tournament they chose the All State Team. First to go from Roosevelt was Larry Exel, then Jerry Butler followed by Pete Nestande. Ron is receiving his third letter and has continually been a dark spot to the opposition. Gymnastics The Gymnasts continued on the Teddies' winning trail. The C class was undefeated in competition throughout the entire year. The leading men were Ken Jonson and Mike Keller. ' B class was aiso successful with' Richard Roth the outstanding man. Hockey This year's hockey team did a tremendous job. 1941 was the last time that the Roosevelt hockey team took a championship. This year the team took City, Region V, and ended up in the semi finals in the State Tournament. The 55-56 hockey squad came under the direction of Bob May, Ail-American from North Dakota State University. Mr. May coached the state champs at Grand Forks. North Dakota for two years, then went to Wayzata, then finally coming to Roosevelt. During Christmas vacation the squad took a trip North to play Warroad and Roseau. After a 500 mile trip by bus the team was defeated by Warroad 6 to I, but they came back to defeat Roseau 2 to I. The two most exciting games of the season were with Henry. The first was played to a I-I tie. In the second game the Teddies beat them 2-0 on two goals by Bart Larson, to clinch the City title. A very interesting thing about this year's team is that they came from behind 5 times to beat their opponents. The outlook for next year looks good. Coach May is very happy to have some returning lettermen. and the prospects from the B squad are going to make a top rate team for next year. Left to Right. Front row: D. Larson. Olin, Schluck. They did very well in city meets and state competition. One of the most outstanding records was turned in by Jack Frederickson. Jack broke the state pole vault record with a I2'-2i 2, vault. This however was not quite high enough for the state title. Tom Kolesar, one of this year's co-captains, tied the school record in the 100-yard; dash. His time was 10:3. This time was good enough for a city championship in this event. Tom also took second place in the low hurdles in the city. The team lost seven men last year, but Mr. Yngve says he will have many replacements. Among these are Tom Flakne and Bob San-deen in the 440; Orval Fenstad and Gary Reme in the Mile; and L. C. They also tied for sixth place in the state with St. Paul Wilson. The Swimming team has a terrific record. They have won the last 27 meets in succession and 66 out of the last 68. Jim Diede turned in one of the most outstanding performances. He swam the 200 yard free style. Ever since Jim was a sophomore he has been a threat to other teams. Easily winning the first two matches against Marshall and West the linksmen lost a close decision match to Edison by the score of 10-91 2. They came back, however, to win six games in a row only to lose the final game of the season to Washburn with the score ending I2i 2-8, 2. The most thrilling game was a 12 2-1 I win over North who was picked by pre-season observers as the top school in the conference. In the course of the season Roosevelt played two non-conference matches against Robbinsdale and won both of them handily. This year's prospects look very good with one letterman returning and several good sophomore golfers. The 1956 team will be captained by Dick Petersen. 1955 Lcttcrmcn Haglind, Norman Kielty. C67D A Baseball Baseball The baseball team finished second in the Southern division last year, after losing to South and twice to Washburn. Wilson was the leading hitter for the second consecutive year. One outstanding man was Ron Jelmo. He pitched a no hit, no run game for 6 2 innings against Southwest after he relieved with two men out in the first inning. Last year's team started out with eight lettermen headed by co-captains Jim Nor-wick and Jim Hastings. This year's team will have seven returning lettermen, with the two co-captains. Bart Larson and Larry Exel, cocaptains for this year, will be three-year lettermen when this season ends. The final decision for the Southern division championship was not decided until the final game with Washburn, which Roosevelt lost. 3-0. This year promises to be very interesting. The team should do equally well or even better than last year. The pitching staff should be much improved with a year's experience behind them; the hitting should also show marked improvement. Equipment Managers The managers are responsible for caring for the many thousands of dollars worth of sports equipment. They are on the job almost the year around, starting with football in the fall and ending with Track and Baseball in the spring. The equipment must be in tiptop shape. The girls' gym classes are taught by Miss Rae Wilbur and Miss Shirley Price. During the second semester of their junior year, girls are trained to become leaders. As the gym teachers assistants they keep the attendance records, take care of the equip- ment and help the gym teachers with the classes. The leaders referee for intramural tournaments in basketball and volleyball. Tournaments in volleyball, basketball, badminton, tennis, and ping pong are held after school for any girl or team of girls interested in competing. The seniors all agree that the co-rec class is the most fun of all. The boys and girls participate together in baseball and volleyball tournaments, square and folk dancing. Girls' Sports This year has been one of the most active as far as girls' sports are concerned. Several new teams were organized which took part in city competition. The swimming team, one of the newly organized teams, ended the season with a record of six wins and one tie. Roosevelt was host to the Eastern Division of the city co-rec badminton tournament. Three doubles teams—Joyce Huisman and Dave Nelson, Beth Fladeland and Ray Rado-sevich, and Karen Brinkman and Pete Hag-man—took part. In the final competition Beth and Ray were runners-up. An intramural badminton tournament was played to determine what girls would make up the badminton team. The girls' badminton team had a record of one win and three ties. With the coming of spring, a golf and a tennis team were organized. Prospects looked very good for the tennis team, led by last year's city individual champion. Beth Fladeland. Rae Wilbur was the coach for the badminton and golf teams. The tennis and swimming teams were coached by Shirley Price. The girls who participated in sports this year thoroughly enjoyed competing with other schools. Girls Swimming Squad Bottom row: Helseth. Bonin, Helms. Sm th A. Karlstrom. Second row: Weldele. This year a few of the more advanced girls were chosen to act the parts of the animals in the all-school play, Noah. Another dancing class, folk dancing, is also lots of fun. In the individual gym classes the girls are taught the fundamentals in various sports such as badminton, bowling, tennis, ping-pong, golf, shuffleboard, and deck tennis. The trampoline is one of the most popular pieces of equipment in the gym. The girls are very anxious to learn new stunts on the trampoline. The girls who take team sports play volleyball, basketball, baseball, and other sports as a team. The sophomore gym classes are a combination of the other classes. A co-rec class is offered to senior boys and girls. Training to become a girls’ leader is offered in the first semester of the junior year. Each of the various gym classes is a one semester course, enabling every girl to get a wide background in physical education. Modern Dance Technique Front: Stevens. L. Larson. Patterson. The traditional flag raising before school opened the festivities of the day and already the air was tense with excitement. Last minute preparations were made for the auditorium program and then the big moment arrived. The processional started and two by two the attendants came down the aisle and last of all our king and queen— Henry Aim and Marion Larsen! Screams and applause showed the approval of the audience. The auditorium program was one of the best we have ever had for homecoming at Roosevelt. It was full of talent with both students and alumni participating in it. Our slogan this year was Jolt the Volts! and that is exactly what we did—20-0. The game was dedicated to the king and queen and their attendants. Bermudas are worn with or without knee hi ‘s’ ’ by girls and boys alike. Blazers are worn with slacks for the casual look or with skirts for school wear. Matching plaid blazers are sported by some couples. Each year many new styles arise in the shoe line. This year saddle shoes, worn with thick anklets, were especially popular. Jewelry also gives rise to new fads each year. Especially popular this year were dangling bracelets composed of several bands. Crazy hats of all colors, sizes, shapes, and descriptions popped out during the state tournament. Red and white golf hats were worn by all members of the basketball team. Fads are here today and gone tomorrow. Yet there are always new ones to take their place and make life more amusing. Bracelets, Cuff Links, and Pop-it-Pearls Thfondson, Cloyton, Hill. Whose Socks n' Saddles? C79J Noah Noah, an all-school play, presented on April 5th and 6th was somethins new and special to Roosevelt. It was the first play in which sophomores and juniors, as well as seniors were welcome to try out for parts. The lavish production was written by Andre Obey and directed by A. Pauline Sandboe. A great deal of co-operation was needed to make Noah a success. The art students contributed by making the animal costumes. Members of the modern dance class portrayed the animals. Johnson, Lundquist. This year for the first time a trophy was awarded to the cheerleaders of one of the teams participating in the state basketball tournament. We can be very proud of our fine cheerleading squad who won the trophy, awarded by the St. Paul Dispatch, on the basis of sportsmanship, pep, enthusiasm, and friendliness. The 1955-56 cheerleading squad consisted of Gail Lundquist, Beryl Matson, Carol Ruona, Beth Fladeland, Dick Johnson, Eddie Felien, Dick Carlson, and Dick Pottsmith. The cheerleaders chosen to take their place in the '56-57 season are Mary Lucy, Debbie Christensen, Rosann Case, Judy Adler, Carl Jackson, Steve Nelson, Dave Ekholdt, Mike Keller, and Rusty Brokaw. V-l-C-T-O-R-Y is any cheerleader's favorite cry; and this year it was especially popular with the Roosevelt eight as they followed their teams to victory. The squad kept busy by leading cheers at football, hockey, and basketball games. They planned and took part in clever pepfests before many games. They thought up new cheers and songs and devised new ways to do old cheers. Miss Leoni was the new adviser of the cheerleaders. Wc Gotta Win! Matson, Felien. Winter Sports Day At one o'clock on the afternoon of Friday, January 13, the dismissal bell rang and the students of Roosevelt High rushed outdoors to start the festivities of Winter Sports Day. A parade assembled outside of school and proceeded to Sibley Field where it formed a grand march. Games, dancing, and the selection of a king and queen of teachers followed. Then the clock rolled around to the tense moment—crowning time. Miss Patti Page, radio and television star, was on hand to do the honors. Miss Page looked over the five candidates—Bill Zwiers, Dick Hanson, Orval Fenstad, Gary Howard, and Dan Thompson. Excitement mounted; then Bill Zwiers was crowned King of the 1956 Winter Sports Day. A hockey game between the alumni and our hockey team followed. Our present team showed its championship form by downing the alumni squad. The crowd broke up and departed for our 5:00 p.m. basketball game at Williams Arena. The Teddies emerged victorious over Southwest, 65-39. There was just enough time to dash home and get ready for the dance. The Winter Sports day dance was a fitting climax to a very successful day. Patti Page Crowns King Bill Patti Page, Zwiers. R. Students and faculty planned the carnival as a benefit for an ailing member of the faculty, Mr. Vogtsberger. Our gala decorated school was full of balloons. crepe paper, decorative signs, and attractive booths. Fun was had by all at the Cake Walk, Variety shows, Auditorium program, and dance. There were fish ponds, comic book stands, a country store, and many booths offering games of chance. Fortunes were told and members of the art class sketched pictures. One of the hits of the evening proved to be O'Halrons Gartersnapper Review which was attended by capacity crowds at each performance. The delightful aroma of popcorn floated through the halls, Coffee, cookies, pop, and ice cream were also sold. Root beer was served in the Beer Gardens. Students, faculty, janitors, and the luncheon cooks pitched in to help. This total cooperation and school spirit made the carnival a huge success. Sidewalk Artist B. Olson. Legs? Wittgraf. Fenstad. Memories We'll have these moments to remember . . Remember when the Quar-Teds sang that song during the homecoming program? Many things have happened since then that we'll never forget. Weren't we proud, for instance, when two of our athletic teams, hockey and basketball, went to the State Tournaments, especially since it was the first time Roosevelt had ever gone to either one. Our band and the Rockettes were never better and our cheerleaders won the first trophy ever given for cheerleading at the tournament. V for Victory Moments to Remember Qu«f-Tcd$: Untinen. Barsness. Nor will they forget their Senior banquet, Stairway to the Stars. Of course no one will forget our Spring Dance and our sweet queen Gail Lundquist. Remember, too, singing around the Christmas tree, the Carnival that everyone worked so hard on, the sophomore and junior parties, and all the other exciting activities that made 1956 the grand year it was. How true these words will seem when, years from now, we graduating seniors will think about our school days’ at Roosevelt High. Everything seemed especially wonderful this year, maybe because we knew it was our last year together. No one will ever forget . . . the spirit and fun at all the games, the scramble for tickets in order to get to the State tournament, the senior party when everyone came in costumes showing the 1856 styles, the banquet at the Skyroom, Fitting Caps and Gowns Marlys Lund, Fritz Simonscn. and, last but not least, the cramming for the tests. Yes, everything was wonderful, and we can't help but thank our capable officers and advisers for the part they played in this, our senior year. Now that our three years together are over, we are going out to face the world. We will be on our own, and will soon find out what these last years have taught us, but nothing shall be impossible if we only remember and keep the spirit and determination we had in ’56. [W] Square Dancing 1856 Centennial Theme Using the 100th birthday of Minneapolis as its theme, the senior class party was entitled, Minneapolis 1856. On February 21, 1956, at 7:00 p.m., the seniors began to arrive. As the girls came in. everyone looked twice for Indians were soon roaming the floor, and a few sleepy girls were in their nightgowns and caps; however, the majority of the girls were in sunbonnets. full skirts .and pantaloons. The boys were dressed in old jeans, plaid shirts, and Confederate uniforms. A few of them even sported beards, home grown. One of the highlights of the evening was the square dancing, led by a professional caller. Next came the grand march, at the end of which everyone was treated to a delicious box lunch. Social dancing followed, and as the party came to an end, everyone agreed that it had been a great success. Hot Rod 1856 Mul'cady, Osien, Wittgraf Centennial Costumes Higgins Jacobson. Sophomore Officers Bill Rauhauser, Dave Swenson, Pat Schleppegril, Jim Schluclc. Junior Officers In the fall of 1955 four capable officers were elected to head the junior class. They are L. C. Hester, President; Ron Eikaas, Vice-President; Jim Keely, Treasurer; and Carol Christy, Secretary. With the help of Mr. Sorensen, their adviser, and the junior executive board .they planned their class party. Over 650 juniors are awaiting their opportunity to become seniors in the fall of 1956. Lion and Lioness Jackie Gibson Bud 8jerken Sophomore Class In September, 1955, over 700 new students entered Roosevelt High to begin three years of hard work and fun. It was the largest class in the history of the school, yet it didn’t take long for everyone to get acquainted. The class was divided into 23 Sophomore homerooms. Out of these 23 teachers, Mr. Riemenschneider was chosen Tenth grade chairman and was assisted by Miss Robertson and Mr. R. R. Blake through the year. They carefully supervised Sophomore activities and assisted the class officers. Bill Rauhauser, Dave Swenson, Jim Schluck, and Pat Schleppegril were elected to preside as officers of the class. Working with the Sophomore executive board, which consists of one member from each 10th grade homeroom, they planned a number of activities, including their class party. Keeping these words in mind, March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, the class party was held on March 2, and was entitled, March Whirl. A lion and lioness were chosen to reign over the evening games and dances. The fun and spirit which they had that night has continued, and has added much to the Roosevelt Spirit of ’56. C 128 3 Junior Party The Junior Party, entitled Blarney Bop. was held March 13. In accordance with St. Patrick's Day tradition everyone came dressed in green. Dancing to the music of the Swing Band and playing volleyball were the main events of the evening. Refreshments were served by the mothers of the juniors.
