The highlight ot the choir's activities ot this year was a trip to Cleveland, Clhio. They went there to sing tor the Music Edu- cators' National Conterence, North Central Division. The choir raised money tor the trip. The choir has given many pertormances this year. Among them are their annual Christmas and spring concerts, Baccalaure- ate, and singing tor many other pertorm- ances. Qur choir is well lcnown throughout the Northwest and we here at Roosevelt are very proud ot it. Bottom row: C. Johnson, Wartzsh, Rudsdil, Mr. Andersen, adviser: l-loule, Booth, Thorcn, Gclmen. The ambition ot many ot the girls is to become a member ot Choristers or the A Cappella Choir. The Girls' Choir meets every day during the sixth hour un- der the direction ot C. Wesley Andersen, better lcnown as Andy. The Christmas Concert is one ot the two programs the Girls' Choir takes part in every year. The Roosevelt Symphony Orchestra, under the direction ot Albert Swanson, has tull instrumentation laclcing only a contra bassoon. For many years, the orchestra has won tirst place honors in both the state and na- tional competition. Many ot the graduating students trom the orchestra have won schol- arships to various colleges and universities. Several others have entered the protessional tield and are now playing with many ot the outstanding symphonic organizations in the United States. Two ot the tormer Concert- masters ot the Roosevelt Orchestra have won scholarships and are now at Juilliard, which is a college ot music located in New Yorlc. During the year, the orchestra gives school concerts and also plays at the class plays. Each year the orchestra also makes trips, ap- pearing in various schools and cities. They also have exchange programs at which the orchestras trom other schools entertain at Roosevelt. Awards are given to outstanding mem- bers ot the orchestra every year. These awards are given tor the most outstanding musician, the student who has made the most progress, and tor the most valuable. , ar, on a, i o, ren. Bond The Roosevelt Marching Band and Con- cert Band is one ot the tinest in the city. Un- der the very capable leadership ot Mr. Oren Henning, the band was organized this year into a unit ot l23 members. The Marching Band plays tor all home tootball games and tor several ot the bas- ketball games. This year the Concert Band presented a Spring and Fall Concert besides playing tor several student assemblies, the variety show, and Commencement exercises. The same students play in both the March- ing and Concert Band, but some ot them change instruments. A second band is maintained where the students strive to play their instruments well enough to be accepted in the tirst band. This year the second band consisted ot 88 members. The tlag twirlers and maiorettes are an important part ot the Marching Band. They appear along with the band during the halt- time pertormances at the games and con- tribute much to the spirit ot the occasion. A teature ot the band is the tormations which they present. Among those initiated tor the tirst time this year were The Ameri- can Heritage and The Story ot Two Alum- ni. The bands are held in high regard by the student body and alumni. We give our entire apprecia- tion to these tellows, who teach us to be good sports both in school and atter school. The backbone ot our success is the coach- ing behind us. In the tall sports, the tootball team. sut- tered by the loss ot Captain Jerry Shetler, took tourth place. The B squad captured the city championship. The cross country boys took a close second to our old rival South- west. ln the winter sports, the basketball team tied tor second place in the city. Dave John- son, 6 tt. IO in. center, was chosen by Lite Magazine as one ot the tallest boys in the U.S. high school competition. The B squad took another championship. The swimming team won the city championship. Gymnastic team had a good record with the D class taking the championship and the C and B classes taking a second place. ln hockey we took tourth place. The wrestling team won the city championship. As it will be too late tor the results ot the spring sports, we predict that the baseball and track teams will be in the championship running. Golf and tennis should have a very good year. One ot the best parts ot the co-rec program is the volleyball tournament. This year the championship game was played three times betore a winner was determined. Girls' leaders, the gym teachers' assistants, take an instruction course in the tirst semes- ter ot their junior year. ln the second semes- ter and in the tirst semester ot their senior year they keep attendance records, take care ot equipment and help the gym teach- ers with the classes. After school tournaments in volleyball, basketball, badminton, tennis, and ping- pong take place. Any girl or team ot girls may take part in the tournaments. Girls who sign up tor team sports have a chance to participate in basketball, base- ball, soccer ancl volleyball. The individual sports are tennis, golt, bad- minton, bowling and ping pong. The co-rec class, which was tirst organized in l94l, is considered lots ot tun. The sports consist ot activities in which the boys and girls can participate on a tairly equal basis. Cheerledders The taithtul, enthusiastic cheerleaders ot this year have led the students' cheers through victory and deteat, joy and sorrow. This peppy, bouncy squad cheered at the games, led the pep tests in the auditorium, and pertormed other duties. During home- coming the cheerleaders present the impres- sive tlag raising ceremony. The I954-55 cheerleaders were Audrey Jackson, Pat Cor- coran, Gordy Stevens, Fran Schumacher, Dick l-lelseth, Joan Bondeson, Beryl Mattson and Eddie Felien. The peppy new cheerleaders who will lead the maroon and gold in l95S-56 will be Gail Lundquist, Dick Johnson, Beth Fladeland, Dick Pottsmith, Carol Rouna, and Dick Carl- son. They will be joined by Beryl Mattson and Eddie Felien, veterans ot this year's squad. Joan Bondeson, the other junior on this year's squad, will no longer be a cheerleader because she is going on the work program. Through the year the cheerleaders re- ceived coaching and inspiration trom Rae Wilbur, the girls' gym teacher. The cheer- leaders were always able to depend on her tor help with pep tests and the regular prac- tice sessions. This year the cheerleaders were very tor- tunate in getting new unitorms. Many homerooms participated in the tournaments this year. This sport provides a chance tor recreation and exercise and just plain whole- some tun. Another thing which is important is the tact that the calibre ot play is good. Competition in the tournaments was very good with many teams in contention tor the respective grade titles. ln the YMCA Invitational Tournament Roosevelt wallced ott with top honors. They attend meetings and then give reports to their homerooms on what was discussed. This group appointed the able committees that planned such activities as the senior Roaring Twenties Party, Senior Banquet, and the Senior Prom. Several senior auditoriums were put on by the Class Qtlicers and the executive board. This was tor the benetit ot the whole senior class because various plans ot senior activi- ties were brought to our attention. Outtits that haven't been worn tor twenty to thirty years were brought out ot the cedar chests and closets and we all lcnow as we were getting ready tor our party our parents were remembering when they too once wore the same outtits. Wedding gowns to tancy short dresses were worn by the girls and the boys came declced out in striped coats and pants to the ever popular bathing suits that were worn in the twenties by the men. The party turned out to be a wonderful success because everyone had a grand time just loolcing at the outfits worn by their triends. The Charleston was played and all who participated can well realize that our parents must have had the time ot their lives when they were our age. This is the tirst time in many years that the seniors have had a costume party.
