VON LEVERN, after 28 years ot leadership, leaves a lasting imprint on the students, graduates, teachers, and parents of the Roosevelt High School community. His love tor boys and girls, his taith in their maturing iudgment and willingness to accept responsibilities have made Mr. von Levern a triend and champion ot youth. Under his direction Roosevelt High School has evidenced a steady growth in self discipline through student participa- tion in school government. Strict adherence to his ideals ot sound educational principles and a willingness to experiment have characterized Mr. von Levern's philosophy. Always wanting the best in taculty, building, and equipmen't, Mr. von Levern has doggedly persisted in his determination to achieve one ot the tinest schools in the city. Roosevelt High School and its thousands of graduates stand as a memorial to the professional lite ot Mr. von Levern. Seated: Stevens, Frondell, Lutz. Student Council The student council is the father of Roosevelt's many organizations. There is one representative from every home room. The student council is the foundation of Roosevelt's student government. Among the many activities of this group are the three annual dances and festivities connected with them. These annual af- fairs are Homecoming, Winter Sports Day, and the May Dance. These are the only dances sponsored by the student council. The Roosevelt student council puts out the Roosevelt Guide. This is a small, pocket size book made especially for the new Roosevelt entrant. This does not mean that the book is only good in your sophomore year. lt is used until the stu- dent council prints a revised edition. We also have two people picked to rep- resent Roosevelt on the All-City Student Council. The All-City Student Council is a group of student council members from each Minneapolis public high school. These, along with many others, are the activities of one of the finest student coun- cils in the state and nation. Row 'iz Kusske, V. Let's have it quiet in here. Some kids want to study. This worn-out phrase is what the study hall chairmen are constantly shouting in hopes of keeping the study halls quiet. The chairmen do an excellent job, however, and are setting such a fine example of student government that it is being copied in other schools throughout the state. The Ethics Committee Villella, Frantz, Wallin, J. Olson, Dean. Ethics Committee Do you want to make a visit to the Ethics Committee? No, sir, was the weak reply. The reluctance of the students to make this visit does not mean that it's composed of unpleasant people. Rather, it's because it is the duty of this committee to penalize the students who receive con- duct slips. Along with this duty the mem- bers act as clerks. They type, stencil, and tile. Mercy, oh, mercy. rw l L LJ Row I: BEVERLY MORGAN, SECRETARY-TREASURER, Bye, V. Swanson, Honmyhr, Elvin, Heel, McCormick, Palmquist. Row 2: Mr. Palm- quist, Adviser, Nordland, Martin, F. Senior Honor Society The Senior Honor Society ot Roosevelt, which is a branch ot the National Honor Society, was organized in 1926. Members must have a 2.3 grade average in their sophomore and junior years. They must also have good character, be leaders, and do service to others. These qualifications, except tor the grade average, are repre- sented in a pin given to each member at his initiation. The Honor Society is essen- tially a service organization. Sale of home- coming buttons, soliciting tor the com- munity chest, and the annual Christmas party are activities ot this group. One of the mostiinteresting and exciting things the members do is to take an annual trip out ot the city. Out ot the city last year meant Washington, D. C., the destination for this year's members, too. The excur- sion will last tive days, and the time will be spent mostly in sight-seeing. Since the trip is taken during the school year, you may wonder about the school work. lt's all made up beforehand! Row iz Ohno, E. Peterson, Nerison, Edin, Turnbull, Kromer, Porter, Dean, A. Nelson. In order to become a mem- ber ot this club you must be the winner ot an R letter. Being a member of this club is one of the most desirable things tor a boy to gain at Roosevelt. This club is representative ot the boys who have participated on Roosevelt's many championship teams. For example, last year the Teds grabbed off champion- ships in basketball, swimming, wrestling, volleyball, a co-championship in skiing, and the Northwest championship in gym- nastics. Last tall Roosevelt's gridders tied for the city title. Also, the cross-country Won In 1953 team took second place. In this year's win- ter sports Roosevelt was second in basket- ball, swimming, wrestling, skiing, and gymnastics. However, the gymnastics team won the Northwest title tor the sec- ond straight year. At the time this story was written the spring sports had not started actual com- petition, but the golt squad seems to have the best chance tor a high finish in the city standings. lt doesn't look to encour- aging tor the tennis team, however, there are possibilities. The baseball and track teams are fairly strong in spots and with hard work could prove to be very suc- cesstul. 1111519 They Carry The Big Stick Seated: Morgan, Mr. Neilsen. Standing: Manolis, D. It is the only newspaper, among the many other high school newspaper in Minneapolis, that is published weekly. There are twen- ty-six issues put out per year. During the past year the staff has purchased a new type called the Twentieth Century 604 Type. It is used for the printing of head lines. There is one editor for each page except for pages one and three on which two or more persons work. More Competent Members Nolan, I. Olson, McGovern, Shannon, Foster, Doan, Kallstrom. The Holly Hop, one of our first fall dances, was sponsored by the Standard. The Standard, although inexpensive to buy, is quite expensive to run. Since pic- ture costs are quite high, the staff mem- bers are trying to discover new methods of getting finer pictures for a lower price. The Standard staff has covered nearly every event of the school year. Many thought- provoking editorials such as Clubs, Sports Are Fun If Grades Are Kept Up, Education, Tolerance Necessary for Peace, and What Do You Mean You Have Nothing To Be Thankful For? have added much to the editions. The Sagamore In room 214 there is a small group ot students who plod steadily toward a com- mon goal. They work for one hour each day to complete the Sagamore. The stu- dents ot Roosevelt entrust many ot their high school memories to this staff. Their earnestness is illustrated by the fact that they often work during tree time to com- plete assignments on time. One seldom sees statt members or hears ot them until that day in May when the new, clean Sagamores are delivered. Ev- So What's With These Guys? Standing: Hendrickson, Emery, Hall. Then the Sagamores are put away and may not be looked at again tor years. During those years the people in the book have married, started families, and made careers tor themselves. Choir When the choir members assembled last fall, little did they realize that this would be their greatest season. As a reward for their daily rehearsals, they had the pleas- ure ot presenting two successful concerts, one at Christmas and the other in the spring. ln addition to this, other singing engagements were accepted, including an evening performance at the Nicollet Hotel, a noon concert at the Farmers and Mechan- ics Bank, and, ot course, music tor the an- nual all school pre-Easter service. Besides all these, the choir sang for baccalaureate and commencement. Climaxing the whole season was the trip to Chicago, with en- gagements in Milwaukee, Great Lakes Naval Training Station, and in the city of Chicago itself. Row 'l: R. Johnson, Ohno, D. This year the Choristers took part in the Christmas concert, and also in the spring concert. ln the spring concert they sang Russian Picnic, Coming Through the Rye, The Woodchuck Song, and Holi- day Song. Orchestra Besides providing many fine auditorium programs at their own school, the Roose- velt Orchestra this year gave concerts at Columbia Heights, North High School, and at various cities in Minnesota and Wiscon- sin. In return for a concert given at Supe- rior, Wisconsin, the high school orchestra from that city gave one at Roosevelt. The Roosevelt High School Orchestra in the past has won first place in the state division contests and first place in the na- tional division contests. Since the war no competition has been available, therefore, the orchestra has not entered any contests. Many of our former Roosevelt students are playing professionally and have made names for themselves in the musical world. Last year's concert master, Carol Jackson, is now attending the .luliard School of Music in New York and is studying under one of the foremost violin teachers of to- day, Mr. Ivan Galamian. Richard Adams, past concert master, appeared as soloist with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra and won a scholarship to Juliard. He also studied under Mr. Galamian. Mr. Adams has been engaged as a violin soloist with the Armed Services. Many of 'our former students are members of symphony orches- tras throughout the country, and many have won scholarships to various universi- ties as far away as Arizona and Florida. Band This year, as usual, the Roosevelt Highi School Marching Band came through with flying colors. Under the very capable lead- ership of Mr. Oren Henning, it was molded into a fine unit that consisted of about 120 members. Even with this many members it marched as a precision unit and performed beautifully. Some of its routines, the Liber- ty Bell and the Statue of Liberty, were really good, but especially so was the Dragnet routine which was very popular with the bleacherites. Besides playing at the football and the basketball games, the band gave some excellent performances in the auditorium during the year. One can't mention the accomplishments of the marching band without giving some credit to the flag twirlers and maiorettes, who while strutting their stuff added the snap and sparkle that makes a good band unit. Another factor that added polish this year was the band's appearance. Early in- the year, mothers of several of the band members repaired the uniforms. At the start of the second semester, new uniforms were bought for several incoming mem- bers, thus turning out a band that looked very fine and that played the same way. Roosevelt High School has been fortunate indeed to have such a band. It is hoped that the bands of the future can carry on. in as fine a tradition. 2 Vx el. , 2 ' G25 i ! - 4 . Gowans, Coaches Good teams are made by good coaches. With the past record in athletics here at Roosevelt, the popular sentiment that we have the finest staff of coaches in the city is very definitely affirmed. Jerry Sullivan, our new football coach, collaborated with Al Gowans to bring home a winner last fall in A squad football. The B squad was coached by Mr. Blake and Mr. Benson. Oscar Yngve did just as well with his cross-country team which came in second in the city as well as in the state. The winter sports coaches also upheld the fine tradition. Jerry Sullivan became our new wrestling coach and did an excellent iob. Mr. Skaurud coached our ski team for the first time. Mr. Jambeck, old reliable, came up with another fine swimming team. Mr. Lobdell and Mr. Skaurud coached hockey. The basketball season again was a success under the guiding hands of Mr. Courtney and Mr. Blake. The spring sports found Mr. Courtney and Mr. Johnson coaching baseball, Mr. Buck- man, golf, Mr. Yngve and Mr. Haynes, track, and Mr. Skaurud, tennis. The results of these spring sports were too late for publication. The man who was in charge of the equip- ment room was Mr. Riemenschneider who once again did a fine iob. The man behind the scenes was Mr. Strandiord. He took over the very important job of faculty manager in the absence of Mr. Eggan. Mr. Eggan is an exchange teacher in Norway this year. 52 S. T. Football Mr. Gowans, head coach at Roosevelt for sixteen years, produced three cham- pions. Jerry Sullivan came to Roosevelt with a record of turning out the first champion- Deno Converts- See the Ball? ship team at Southwest during his first year there. Everybody asked himself if the combination of Jerry Sullivan and Al Gowans could do the same for Roosevelt. After last year's record of seven losses, one win, and one tie, and the loss of sev- eral lettermen, it seemed to be a big job. We all felt that Mr. Sullivan was the man to do it, he was. FootbaH Roosevelt was led to a city champion- ship by Dick Larson, captain and quarter- back for the Teddies. During the season Dick won the following honors: The Back of The Week, The Team's Most Valuable Player, The City's Most Valuable Player, and The Back of the Year. Lars, as the Team calls him, is a Three year letterman. Although he broke his leg during the '52 season, he was elected captain for '53. Stan Deno. nicknamed Golden Toed by his fellow players, was a very impor- tant figure in several games, especially in The Marshall game in which he kicked The extra point To help Roosevelt win by a margin of one conversion, 7-6. All told he made 7 points out of 8 Tries. The only one he missed was blocked by an opposing linesman. .lerry Shetler, captain for next year, is a Two year letterman and a star guard as far as The students aT Roosevelt are con- cerned. He played first string This year and didn't miss a game because of an in- iury. He was in on most of The Tackles when The play went Through The line. He played on defense and offense. Mr. Sullivan said that we have several returning lettermen and that our chances for next year are good. Al- though the Teddies beat the Patriots in their first conference game of the season, the Pats went on to a victorious season. The Teds, also, conquered every team they came up against, except the Volts. Roose- velt had to win or tie that game in order to clinch first place. A loss would mean a tie with Henry. Although the spirit of the Teds was high it took more than spirit to stop the hard smashing line of Vocational to a 6 to O win. Morgan, Westergaard 57 Two coming up: Higher: Deno Basketball After losing all of last year's lettermen except for this year's captain, Jim Midtbo, the city sports writers and school coaches rated Roosevelt as the team most likely to be beaten. That, of course, was not Mr. Courtney's viewpoint. Wayne Courtney, who is rated one of the best coaches in the City League, knew he had a winning team, but he also knew there was a lot of work in store to shape up a team that had only A Squad Fritske one regular returning from the previous year. The Teds started off the schedule with some of the toughest teams in the city. After beating Central and Edison, people started wondering whether Roosevelt wasn't going to repeat last year's winning streak. After losing to North by one point, the Teds beat Vocational, lost to Henry in a thrilling game, beat Marshall, South- west, West, South, and Washburn in that order, and finished in second place. The class works on the trampoline too. The girls, however, are reluctant to try it. Girls' athletics do not -get the publicity that boys' sports do, but nevertheless they are just as active in sports as the boys are. The team sports consist of basketball, baseball, soccer, and volleyball, The individual sports are tennis, golf, badminton, bowling, and ping pong. Any person who gets co-rec thinks that he was born under a lucky star. They have loads ot fun with volleyball probably the favorite sport. Tournaments are organized tor volley- ball, basketball, ping pong, and badmin- ton. These tournaments mean a great deal to the girls and get great participation from all grades. Any girl or group ot girls can enter the tourneys. From the begin- ning ot the tourneys to the tinal game it is a contest all the way. The gym teachers are very ably assisted by the girls' leaders. The Teddy cheerleaders this year led the stu- dents in cheers which could be heard for blocks. This year's cheerleaders faithfully led Roosevelt through all the games whether it was a win or defeat. They also gave pep- fests in auditorium programs to get the Teddy fans ready for the game ahead. The T954 cheerleaders were: Dick Wallin, Re- nee Gillian, Bill Fahlin, Audrey Jackson, Eddie Jacobson, Lorraine Paul, Tom Fron- dell, Sharon Capron. New cheerleaders for next year were chosen by holding try-outs in the gym. They were graded by this year's cheerleaders and the gym teachers, who gave them points according to how well they could do the cheers. They then took the ones with the most points and the contestants were put on the stage during an auditorium pro- gram, and they tried out before the stu- dents. The Roosevelt students chose as next year's new cheerleaders these sophomores and juniors: Beryl Mattson, Eddie Falene, Fran Schumacher, Gordy Stevens, Joan Bondeson, Pat Corcoran, and Dick Helseth. Audrey Jackson, the only iunior on this year's team, will be returning next year. North 5'l - Roosevelt 50: Jackson, Gillian, Paul. 53-54 Cheerleaders: Bottom Row: Gillian, A. Jackson, Capron, L. The weather wasn't the only thing that was cold, the Teddy hitting was mak- ing a very bad showing. As the season progressed, the Ted's pitchers came into their own. i'Leading the list was Bill St. Mane, and Saxe Roberts, each pitching what every hurler dreams about, 'a no-hit game. St. Mane's game dragged out until hitting lost the game for Roosevelt again. Robert's hitless game went 9 innings before the Roosevelt slug- gers finally brought across a run in the 9th to win l-O over West. Roosevelt showed weak hitting during the whole season. When the Teds com- bined the pitching and hitting, they fin- ished with a 3-won and 5-lost record. Captain for the '53 season, Dale Leshov- sky, turned over his post to Martin CSkeeterj Nelson, centerfielder for the Teds. Return- ing lettermen for the '54 season are Skeeter Nelson, Butch Hastings, Jim Norwick, Gary Sampson, and Dick Winkler. Cheaper By The Dozen is the story of an efficient business man and the father of twelve children. His main purpose in life is to run the most efficient household in the world. Many incidents illustrate the humor of the story. At one time, for in- stance, the father demonstrated how to eliminate wasted motions while one is taking a bath. The assembly calls and the family council were all matters of general interest and gave the audience a chuckle. ln the end, Father leaves for the World Management Conference, and Mother and the children discuss the problems at hand.
