National Forsenic League It you are interested in public speaking or plan to enter a vocation where it would be a valuable asset to you, the National Forsenic League would help you to de- velop your public speaking abilities. Under the direction of Mr. Osterhus, the group meets every Tuesday and as often else as needed. This year the members attended the annual contest at Gustavus Adolphus College where they competed with other students from the state in individual speech and debate contests. History Club The Roosevelt History Club, which was organized in l945 as the Junior Historical Society, is under the direction of Mr. Haynes. Their purpose is to stimulate an interest in the historical background ot our state. Although it is a comparatively small group, the members are quite active. The programs emphasize discussions, lectures, and movies. A tield trip was taken this year to the Carver County Historical So- ciety Museum. Row 'l: J. Senior Honor Society Scholarship, leadership, character, and service-these are the qualifications tor membership in the Honor Society. In Oc- tober, 67 students who met these require- ments were inducted into the society at a candlelight ceremony. These students must maintain these merits in order to re- tain their membership. During the year the members take several aptitude and scholarship tests. Our students always win a high percentage of the scholarships that are offered. In April the Honor Society took a tour day trip to Washington, D.C., where they saw the Washington Monu- ment, the Bureau of Engraving, the Con- gressional Library, Arlington Cemetery, Mount Vernon, and the White House. Swanson, James, Howell, Koucky. Science Club The science club starts out the event- filled year by electing their officers. The officers are elected for the entire school year. The driving force behind the con- tinuation of the club has been the vice- president, Anton LaBonte. The only qualification for being a mem- ber ofthe science club is to be enrolled in any one of the many science cources of- fered at Roosevelt. The club activities are Fundamentals of Picture Developing Demonstrated by R. Carlson and L. Anderson. divided into two groups. During the first semester many interesting experiments are performed by the club members. Many very important guest speakers come dur- ing the second semester. The purpose is to interest the members of the club in the various professions and to tell the mem- bers a little about the work of each profes- sion. One of the speakers, the Dean of the School of Mining at the University of Minnesota, not only told the members about mining but also gave some mem- bers the chance to go through the mining scholo at the University. Some of the other guest speakers were representatives from the Minneapolis En- gineers Club, a nurse and a medical tech- nician from General Hospital, and a speak- er who told the club about the Pure Food and Drug Act. All the activities of the club are not seri- ous, for the members have many other ac- tivities, too.
