The floor covering is new and modern lighting has been installed. The library now has an additional room for class use. Storage space and a special workroom are a joy to the library workers. Row 2: Nierson, Stacy, Sack. Student Council Our Student Council, headed by Mr. Strandiord, is the spark plug ot our school. Its members are elected from each home- room and serve a one year term. They meet at designated times each week and discuss student conduct and cooperation in the lunchroom, in study halls and at ath- letic games. This group plans our Homecoming and Winter Carnival Days. They work hard to organize these activities. Another part ot their job is the management of our student organized lunchroom. Several boys are appointed by the council to supervise our lunchroom habits and conduct. Each year a Service Trophy is awarded by the council to the person who has con- tributed most to the school in the line ot service. We hear this request in our student governed study halls. It is the duty ot the student chairman and several other boys and girls to keep order, to check passes, and to take attendance in a roomtul ot boisterous teenagers. Each chairman is ap- pointed by a head chairman and tries hard to carry out his responsibility. Council Office Help Office Help Each period ot the day with the helptul supervision ot Mr. Strandiord and the ot- tice help chairman, Tom Hughes, these boys and girls attend to the many and varied duties of keeping our student coun- cil ottice in good order. Their job consists of tiling study hall passes, typing bulletins, and maintaining a service point and pro- gram record tor every student in school. The 1952-53 Standard Staff Row l: Uhr, Green, Hucliaby, Mr. Neilsen, Adviser: Hafvens Norman, Johnston, Folden, Butler. P. Johnson, Freclriclison. Standard Staff Every fourth hour an ambitious group of Roosevelt students work diligently to put out their top rate high school paper. lt isn't all work and no play, though, for this is the staff that sponsored the Sock Hop, which was a huge success. ls student government active? How are you going to spend your vacation? What action will Russia's new leader take? These are a few of the polls the Standard takes to express the views of the students. According to the standards of the Na- tional Scholastic Press Association, 26 is- sues a year is considered a weel-cly paper. The Standard happens to be the only high school in Minnesota that has such a weekly paper. ln comparison to the papers of other high schools in Minneapolis the Standard is the most inexpensive paper per issue. Among the winners of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association was the Roose- velt Standard. The paper placed second among all printed newspapers of high schools with l,5OO to 2,500 enrollment for the l95l-52 school year. ln the spring semester the Standard changed over to a new system. The boys began alternating issues with the girls, making the former sports page editor take over the first and the second pagesg then O is, M. Johnson, Helgoe. Row 2: Sorenson Elton, Laulclce, the girls handled the sports page. The boys and the girls on this staff are very adaptable and can be used in any posi- tion. Here's to the Standard staff and their ad- viser, Mr. Neilsen, for giving Roosevelt such a splendid newspaper! 1952-53 STANDARD smrr Mr, Neilsen, Faculty Adviser Editor-in-chief -----, Mildred Hafvenstein Associate Editor -------- Allen Uhr First Page Editors - Mary Loomis Bev Helgoe. Carlson, Hill, Rhoades, McKay. Row Knudsen, Aker, J. Jensen, Dorland. i i Sagamore Staff If you have ever walked by Room 214 during the fourth period, you probably had to iump out of the way as the mem- bers of the 1953 Sagamore staff rushed out to schedule a picture or collect some information. There was never a dull mo- ment during the year. We started by plan- ning the theme and the cover of the year- book, then we had two days of feverish work taking homeroom and club pictures. Some pleasure came next. The staff Went to Chicago for the National Scholas- tic Press Association Convention. They at- tended many lectures and discusisons, but they also had some time to see the sights of the Windy City. When we returned home, we had many ideas on how to im- prove the Sagamore. The the real work began. Our photog- raphers took dozens of pictures for every section of the book. Stories were written and typed. The art work was completed for the division pages. Senior pictures were assembled. Pages were sent to the printer, returned, proof read, and sent again. Finally the Sagamore was finished. We did our best and we hope that you like it. 2: Mr. Wagner, Adviser, Kittock, S. Senior Honor Society Scholarship, leadership, character, and service-these are the qualifications tor membership in the Honor Society. In Oc- tober, 67 students who met these require- ments were inducted into the society at a candlelight ceremony. These students must maintain these merits in order to re- tain their membership. During the year the members take several aptitude and scholarship tests. Our students always win a high percentage of the scholarships that are offered. In April the Honor Society took a tour day trip to Washington, D.C., where they saw the Washington Monu- ment, the Bureau of Engraving, the Con- gressional Library, Arlington Cemetery, Mount Vernon, and the White House. On the way home, they stopped for a sight- seeing tour ot Chicago. The officers are elected for the entire school year. The driving force behind the con- tinuation of the club has been the vice- president, Anton LaBonte. The only qualification for being a mem- ber ofthe science club is to be enrolled in any one of the many science cources of- fered at Roosevelt. The club activities are Fundamentals of Picture Developing Demonstrated by R. Carlson and L. Anderson. divided into two groups. During the first semester many interesting experiments are performed by the club members. Many very important guest speakers come dur- ing the second semester. The purpose is to interest the members of the club in the various professions and to tell the mem- bers a little about the work of each profes- sion. One of the speakers, the Dean of the School of Mining at the University of Minnesota, not only told the members about mining but also gave some mem- bers the chance to go through the mining scholo at the University. Some of the other guest speakers were representatives from the Minneapolis En- gineers Club, a nurse and a medical tech- nician from General Hospital, and a speak- er who told the club about the Pure Food and Drug Act. All the activities of the club are not seri- ous, for the members have many other ac- tivities, too. The German Club had no trouble finding activities to keep them busy. One of the biggest events ot the year was their annual Christmas party. Everything was German: the songs, the music, and even the new members. The initiates were contestants on a quiz program and paid the consequences for incorrect answers. Many activities were carried on at the monthly meetings. These activities included a one-act German play, movies, and the study of German folk costumes. Spanish Club Adelante, siempre adelante is the Span- ish Club motto. lt means Forward, always forward. The members uphold this motto by carrying out their many and varied activi- ties. The students must maintain a first semester average of B to become a member of the club. Then they have to maintain a C average. The purpose of the club is to give the students a better understanding of the people they are studying. During homecoming the members sell paper Ieis by the dozens to raise money for the club treasury. Everyone remembers how colorful the halls looked when almost every student wore one or more of these Ieis. At the Spanish Club Christmas party, the members had the traditional pinata, a gaily decorated bag filled with goodies, suspended from the ceiling. A student was blindfolded and given a stick, then he tried to break the bag, showering the candy to the floor. During March, the Spanish Club ioined with the other language clubs to put on a very colorful display in the front hall. One of the highlights of the year was a trip to a Mexican village in St. Paul. Another active group within the Spanish Club is the Spanish band. They have played on radio pro- grams, for meetings, and for a banquet. The instruments are a guitar, two violins, and morroccos. The final event of the year is always a senior farewell banquet. This year Mr. Lobdell, adviser, added a l6mm. A Traveling Movie Man Stewart McGovern movie camera to the already impressive list of equipment on hand. This camera was used to make a photo- graphic record of the school activities and was termed by Mr. Lobdell as a movie ver- sion of the Sagamore. The Roosevelt Story, as the movie is called, was com- pleted for its first showing in time for the senior banquet, but the finishing touches to the sound and color will be added in the fall of next year. Filming the Roosevelt Story LaBelle, DeForrest, J, Hanson, Mr. Courtney, Hill, Rob- erfson. Checking Some Equipment Bratrud, McGovern, C. Larson, Graff, LeBelle Naturally The Roosevelt Story is the big news in the way ot audio-visual equip- ment this year, but, as usual, there are the normal everyday tasks of setting up and removing the equipment from the rooms around the school. The assistance that the audio-visual equipment lends in the class- room is, ot course, quite obvious, and it is a well-known tact that the classes eagerly look forward to these interruptions. The Stage Crew Stage Crew The hardworking boys on the stage crew really deserve much credit. They are the backbone ot every auditorium, every class play, and all other stage productions. Without them, there would be no show. Mr. Brick, the adviser, and the boys never seem to share in the glory ot the produc- tions, but they do halt the work. It any- thing goes wrong, they get blamed for it, but they still uphold their motto, Will to Serve. Future Farmers of America The Future Farmers of America is a na- tionally known organization consisting ot boys who are interested in agriculture. The boys belonging to this organization must be enrolled in a vocational agriculture course. This class is a one year course open to any boy who is interested in agri- culture and who is willing to work on some 'farm during the summer months. Belong- ing to the F. F. A. is optional. Mr. C. E. Luke heads his agriculture course as well as the F.F.A. organization. The F. F. A. is better known in rural areas, but many cities have F. F. A. organ- izations. Roosevelt is the only school in either Minneapolis or St. Paul that has an F. F. A. organization. Each year an outstanding senior is se- lected to receive the De Kalb award. He must have put forth much initiative and his marks must have been good. Last year this award was given to Don Sherper. I 1 t Q ,I if ' 'if to Coaches At Roosevelt we are fortunate to have about the finest coaches in the city. They did another fine iob this year iust as they usually do. Starting with the fall sports we have football and cross-country. Our A Squad football coaches are Mr. Gowans and Mr. Jambeck, The team could have done bet- ter, but the coaches just didn't have the material to work with. The B Squad coaches are Mr. Blake and Mr. Curran. Mr. Yngve, the cross-country coach, had another fine team this year as he always does. The team took 2nd place in the city league, and 3rd place in the state. Coaching the winter sports, we have Mr. Curran, Wrestling, Mr. Eggan, Skiing, Mr. Jambeck, Swimming, Mr. Lobdell, Hockey, Mr. Peterson, Gym Team, and finally Mr. Courtney and Mr. Blake, Basket- ball. These last two coaches brought the first city championship in basketball to Roosevelt in the school's history. All of the teams had very fine seasons, taking five championships in all, for the best win- ter sports program we have ever had at Roosevelt. Mr. Courtney and Mr. Johnson, Base- ball, Mr. Buckman, Golf, Mr. Yngve and Mr. Haynes, track, and Mr. Sorenson, Ten- nis, are the coaches of the spring sports. Their results will be too late to print. Two important men whom all of the coaches depend upon are Mr. Riemen- schneider, head of the equipment room. and Mr. Eggan the faculty manager of athletics at Roosevelt. Football The T952 Football season turned out to be another season of sorrow for the grid- ders. The Teddies just couldn't come out on top, although their spirit was high and they had that will to win. After losing their first game to Southwest, the gridders came back to tie Marshall at 6-6. After this game they didn't win another game, mostly because of their fumbling. It seemed as though every time the players had the ball within the opponent's Fifteen yard line or so, they fumbled. Finally when the last game of the season came along, Roosevelt came through with an impressive 7-O victory over Edison. After this tilt, Coach Al Gowans was carried off the field for coaching his squad to their first victory of the season. From this big Teddy team, a most valu- able player was picked. This person was Ritmire who played a very good offen- sive and defensive center. During the season the student body was commended for the backing it gave its team and for the spirit it had put forth even though the team was losing. The team and the coaching staff much appreciated this support. Mau.. -zu' A Trying Out Marshall's Defense J. Thessenga Larson Carries Ball Around End D. Roosevelt also won the district play-off beating West, Central, and Washburn. ln the regional playoffs, the Teddies narrowly dumped Willmar, but then lost to Hopkins. Paul Reinboldt and Ken Tronstad, co- captains, made the all-city, all-district, and all-regional teams. Larry Pierson was awarded a position on the all-district team for his valuable ploy in the district play- offs. Although Don Nelson was the smallest forward in the city, he was one of the best. Skiing Our fine Roosevelt Skiing team came out on top in the city's skiing league again this year, by tying North for first place. Mr. Eggan's skiing teams here at Roose- velt have always been fine, and this year was no exception. The teams' record was four wins, no losses, and three ties. Much of the team's success can be given to two boys: Arve Grimsmo and Ron Sack. Slalom R. Sack Grimsmo was the city champion in cross- country racing, while Sack was one ofthe city's best in the Slalom. During the season, the team took a trip to Duluth to take part in the State Ski meet. There they placed sixth, which is considered good. The team for next year should be iust about the best in the city. In cross-country the team will have two fine skiers in Mar- vin Hegle and Arve Grimsmo. ln the Cross-Country Race A, Grimsmo Slalom these two boys will also be counted on heavily. In jumping, Roy Jacobson will be the outstanding boy, and if he doesn't take the city championship, Mr. Eggan stated he would be very much surprised. Considering all of the other teams in the city league, Roosevelt's only weakness may be in the slalom event. Ron Sack, who is graduating this year, is the boy who kept the team alive in that event. As yet no one has really been found to replace him. LETTERMEN Grimsmo, Arvo' Jacobson, Roy Nerison, Carl' Rolstad, Bruce Sack, Ronald' Sipple, Vincent Hegle, Marvin '-second letter Swimming Once again the swimming team has won the city championship. These eight victories add to the record of 35 wins of the last 36 dual meets in the city league. The team also won the YMCA invitational trophy. State Back-Stroke Champ O. Sween. Sween, Hardy, and Richard Kruger set a new city record in the T80-yard medley with a time of l:46.4. ln the state meet, the team placed fifth. O'Niel Sween again won the TOO-yard backstroke event in the state meet. Kent Hardy, who won the city TOO-yard breast stroke, placed fifth in the state meet. Girls' Sports Even Though girls' athletics don't get the publicity that boys' athletics do, the girls are lust as active in sports as the boys. The regular gym classes taught by LaVerne Bjorklund cmd Rae Wilbur consist of team sports, individual sports, modern dance, folk and square dancing, and a co-rec class for seniors only. The team sports are basketball, baseball, soccer, and volley- ball. Individual sports consist of tennis, golf, badminton, bowling and ping-pong. Modern dance teaches creative movement, . , while folk and square dancing stresses iight dances for group participation. Gt course, any senior girl who takes co-rec thinks that this is the best class ot all. In co-rec volleyball is probably the favorite sport. Beside the regular gym classes the school has organized tournaments for volleyball, basketball, ping-pong, and ' 4 Girls' Volleyball Champions Row 1: Purcell, Ritmire, Nordrum. For about 'a week the gym is lett open for practice, then the tournaments begin. lt is a contest all the way, and the girls who are named as champions really deserve the title. The girls' leaders are another phase ot girls' sports. They are a big help to the gym taechers. When the girls are iuniors they take a semester course in leadership and are then assigned to one gym class. There they take attendance, take care ot the equipment, and help to maintain order in the classes. Cheerleaders The cheerleaders did a great deal to help the teams win this year. Their high spirits and will to win drove the boys on to victory. Even though the students' voices gave out, the cheerleaders who were coached by the girls' gym teachers, always found strength for one more cheer. Homecoming 1952 Everyone looks forward to the festivi- ties of homecoming at Roosevelt because it is always a big success. The flag rais- ing ceremony, which is the traditional way homecoming day is opened, was held on the athletic field with a very large atten- dance. The big question everyone was asking was, Who will the king and queen be? As always, the identity of the royal pair was not revealed until the two walked down the aisle of the auditorium. Then King Vern Schwarzkopf and Queen Sandy Moe, along with their attendants, were in- troduced to the student body. The royal court was entertained by Burt Hanson, famed radio singer, and by talented stu- dents from Roosevelt. Although our game didn't result in a winning score, the defeat didn't dampen the spirt of the day. During halt-time the marching band and the flag twirlers en- tertained the crowd with music and a col- orful exhibition. The royal pair and their attendants rode around the field in con- vertibles. In the evening students and alumni en- ioyed the dance that added the final touch to a truly enioyable homecoming. 5 i 1 , I g . re 'lm T vc A -if v..' y . W 'P' . Y , 2 was ,K . . The first event of the day was the crown- ing of a king. The five candidates for king were ushered across the ice in a trailer. Following them came the distinguished visitors from the St. Paul Winter Carnival: the Prime Minister, Wesley Chandler, and the Queen of Snows, Miss Beverly Prazak, riding in a convertible. The candidates for king were led to the throne occupied by last year's king, Bob Vessey. Miss Prazak then took the crown and placed it on the head of Jack Frantz. King Jack took his place on the throne of ice and his atten- dants, Paul Larson, Jim Armstrong, Bruce Rolstad, and Ken Tronstad, took their places beside him to watch the activities of Winter Sports Day. There were games, a grand march, and dancing on the ice. The Bunny Hop, a snake dance, and square dances afforded real fun. The Roosevelt choir, directed by Mr. C. Wesley Andersen, also gave a Christmas concert, with a special surprise. They sang Nutcracker Suite. The Roosevelt Rockettes dv . Christmas Caroling Roosevelt Rockettes Seven seniors and one junior make up this well known dancing group from Roosevelt. They have performed at our basketball games during the halftime. Their exhibition along with that of the Roosevelt Band and the Flag Twirlers has been said to be one of the most impres- sive exhibitions by any one high school. Besides performing at Roosevelt, the group has danced at different schools and institutions throughout the city and the state. A. Johnson, Graving, Brescanclnl, Plummer, Hultgren, Polski, McNeal. Vedeen. A Scene from Grieg's Arabian Dance Anitra's Dance Brenner, M. Lee, Gustafson, Corrigan Nancylee Galbraith Spring Festival At intervals between 1926 and 1946 the Norse and the Swedish Clubs spon- sored a number of programs featuring Scandinavian declamations and folk danc- ing, showing Scandinavian films, and pre- senting addresses on Scandinavian topics. Beginning with 1947, however, these pro- grams have become annual events which have attracted city-wide attention, es- pecially among the Scandinavian organi- zations of the community. These events are outstanding because of the quality of the performance that the Anitra and the Arabian Girls many students have given. Choral groups, the band, and the orchestra have done exceedingly well with such classical numbers as Grieg's Landsighting, Borch's Moder Svea, and Sibelius' FinIandia. The Swedish and the Norse departments have each time contributed readings, skits, and folk dancing. Last year the drama de- partment dramatized a scene from Henrik Ibsen's famous play, A Doll's House. About 300 students took part in the pro- grams. www AVTEQLA Xqyi'-x'k iWMng S-Inf wr'-7 X-rrC.'15'7Z!V4 11 NL x44 b - Q vxarq LNT-sl ,...J N , - pxjfi QM Q'm.-L ,XLKLQE -Lxi F,lH,fEifmS.NJr-412-Lvlff . Senior Executive Board There were many problems for the Senior Executive Board to cope with this year. One of the biggest was the argument whether to have the Senior Banquet in school or outside of school. The members of the board don't decide these things by themselves. A repre- sentative is chosen from each Senior Home- room to present the problems faced by the Board to their Homeroom where they are voted upon. Their main obiective is to transact business for the whole Senior Class, to represent every- in 8. AA one's ideas, to make less work for the rest of the Seniors, and to keep things running in a democratic way. The board really did a good job this year they had to The Senior Executive Board accomplished their aim this with the many hard problems work out with the Senior Class. year with the guidance ot Mr. Jambeck, Miss Redlund, Mr. Weum, and with the coopera- tion of all the Senior Advisers and Senior Class.
