Roosevelt and West are the only schools in Minneapolis ottering this course. Betore be- ginning to drive the pupils tal4e a written ex- amination and a vision test given by the State Highway Patrol, They then receive a driverls permit allowing them to drive only when ac- companied by a licensed driver. Mr, Vogtse berger begins the lessons in the parlcing lot. l-le teaches the pupils how to shilt and how to con- trol the car at various speeds. Drama Gives Expression Drama may be taken in the eleventh grade or in the tweltth grade. Some ot the things taken up are readings ot various types ot stage plays and a discussion ot cur- rent plays. Some schools otter a course in radio drama where the students learn the use ot a microphone, announcing, script writing, and the art ot developing and using sound ettects. ln drama the students study Oantomime, characterization, and stage techniques. News and English Casses in news are popuiar at Rooseveit. Students who can write well choose it ard creative writing to practice their slcills. Mr. Niel- sen selects his statt members tor the Standard trom his news classes. News may be used as a substitute tor regular English in the eleventh grade. ln grade twelve students study world understanding. u i- Bookkeeping and Commercial Law There are many ditterent subjects ottered in the business training classes. Bookkeeping is ottered to give the student an understanding ot the torms, purposes, and terms which are used in business. Also a study ot methods and torms used to keep a record ot money transac- tions in an ottice and practice in keeping such accounts. Commercial law is otlered to give a knowledge ot the basic principles ot law which every person should know. Subjects studied ine clude contracts, torts, negotiable instruments, leases, insurance, and many others. Mr. Wagni:r, Mrs. R i-3, and M2 Baafos-:tr d-:cod rg a snorthard lettfr. English English is required ot students in all grades ot high school. ln their tirst year the literature studied concerns problems ot personal and social adiustment, ln the second year the emphasis is placed upon the skills ot reading and listening. lt stu- dents show an ability to write they are given an opportunity to do creative work in special writing classes. Secretarial Practice and Office Training Typing is elective in the tenth grade and be- yond. A student must have typing it she is planning to take shorthand. ln shorthand one learns to write letters or other dictated mate- rial quickly and accurately in shorthand sym- bols. In twelfth grade secretarial practice may be taken by pupils who had had shorthand and it will prepare them tor a secretarial positions.
