El Hispono Americcmo Adelante, siempre adelanten is the slogan ot the Spanish Club. Translated into English this slogan means Foreword, always torewardf' El l-lispano Americano was organized in the tall ot l94l and is directed by la Senora l'lall. ln order to become members ot this club. first term Spanish students must have a B average, but a C average is required ot the students in their second term. The purpose ot the club is to give students a better under- standing ot the people whose language they are studying. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday ot every month. The members Row l: M. This year the club has seen mov- ies and has. ot course, had the traditional Christmas pinata party. The Spanish pinata is hung from the ceiling and is filled with goodies: it must be broken by a blindfolded person with a stick. Candy, truits, and nuts then come tumbling out tor everyone. Alchemists At precisely five minutes after three, Sam flies into room 223 and settles the prospec- tive Einsteins down for an interesting Science Club meeting. This activity takes place every other Tuesday afternoon. l922 was the first yeargfor the Science Club. ln I949, the club has had many extra- ordinary meetings. Many times there have been interesting talks and discussions. Bob Hagerman came over from Hamline Univer- sity to give a lecture on soaps and detergents lsoap flakes to most of usl. At another meet- ing the members made prisms to use for pa- perweights. Names were etched on the prisms with a special glass etching paste. One un- usual day there was a demonstration of some solid fuel rockets, two of which met with un- fortunate fates. Blood testing was the subject of another demonstration. At one meeting there was a lecture on the mysterious subject of astronomical and terrestial telescopes. An- other interesting demonstration was the re- moval of spots and stains. Various pieces of cloth were stained. These spots were removed by certain chemicals. Throughout the year the l-li-Y was especially active in giving aid to organizations in need. The first thing they did was to prepare and de- liver speeches in various churches to raise money for the Community Chest. F.O.B. lFor Other Boysl was a drive to raise money for other boys who needed help in the war-torn countries. The banquet was paid for largely by the money the members took in from concessions which they sold at home football games. At Christmas each club sold tickets for a dollar apiece. This money was used as a down pay- ment on a Christmas tree which was bought at one of the lots run by the Y Men's Club. This year the Y will also have its own softball tourna- ment between clubs.
