Their Mojesfies We. the Sagamore statt ot I949, have en- joyed preparing your annual. and we sincerely wish that it will capture the approval ot you, the students and the taculty. 'This year we present as our theme, ln the Days of the Knights. We hope that you will allow the Knights ot Roosevelt Castle to talce you on a journey through the past year ot activities and that it will bring back memories that you want to cher- ish--homecoming and the tootball games: the Winter Carnival and the class banquets: the clubs and even the classrooms where we all worlced so hard remembering chemistry tormu- las, memorizing historical dates, and learning theorems tor geometry. During the past nine years the Sagamore has received an All-American award eight times. We are proud ot this record as the All-Ameri- can is the highest rating given to yearboolcs by the National Scholastic Press Association. The students on the Sagamore statf have been chosen by Mr. Wagner. Last tall the statt consisted ot twelve seniors, and in January it 'was supplemented by six juniors who will be the foundation tor the I95O statt. The students must have a good scholastic standing and be dependable worlcers. Row 2: Oberpriller, Quist, Schobcrg, Allan, Mr. Wagner. Row 3: Herrlin, Knight Reporters The Roosevelt Standard, which is published on Thursday, presents a resume ot the week's news to aII students. The new motto adopted by the statt is It the Standard doesn't come out, it isn't Thursday. Roosevelt students should be proud ot their weekly publication as the Standard has won the AII-American rating many times and has also won honors in the International Quill and Scroll. To become a member ot the statf. a student must complete News I and show an ability to write news articles. The statt meets each day the fourth period in room 325. It you happen to go by room 325 on Tuesday, you may won- der whether a complete issue ot the Standard will really come out Thursday morning. Wednes- day is Standard Day down at the printers. That is the day when page editors help set up type tor their respective pages. The Sagamore extends its sympathies to Mr. Nielsen. The statt is looking forward to the day when their sons and daughters will serve as the backbone ot the Standard. Their slogan is: Cooperation, Service, Loyalty, and Friendship. Each one ot these aims is a worthy goal tor all the members of the club. The primary purpose ot the club is to serve as ushers at all school events not already spon- sored by some other club. Some ot these events are the class play and choir concerts. This activity takes place every other Tuesday afternoon. l922 was the first yeargfor the Science Club. ln I949, the club has had many extra- ordinary meetings. Many times there have been interesting talks and discussions. Bob Hagerman came over from Hamline Univer- sity to give a lecture on soaps and detergents lsoap flakes to most of usl. At another meet- ing the members made prisms to use for pa- perweights. Names were etched on the prisms with a special glass etching paste. One un- usual day there was a demonstration of some solid fuel rockets, two of which met with un- fortunate fates. Blood testing was the subject of another demonstration. At one meeting there was a lecture on the mysterious subject of astronomical and terrestial telescopes. An- other interesting demonstration was the re- moval of spots and stains. Although there is only one hour ot class work a week, an hour's practice on voice or an instrument, six days a week is required. Everyone takes a halt hour lesson a week from an accredited teacher. Students start out learning intervals and scales from the tirst book. Then they progress to the next book on primary chords. The third book is a ditiicult one about secondary chords and harmony. Each spring a city contest is held tor ap- plied music students. To enter, they must pre- sent original compositions. Contestants are given A or B ratings. A pupil gets a thorough background of mu- sic to enable him to advance farther and taster, no matter what type ot music he has chosen. He has an advantage over other mu- sicians to whom the course was not available. The state ski meet this year was held at Duluth with eight boys from the Roosevelt team participating. During the' in- termission a program was presented in the auditorium, consisting ot a talent show under the supervision ot the reigning king and queen. The program was followed by refresh- ments tor all. Modern dancing continued in both gyms after the traditional ceremonies. The decorations in the gym were done in the school colors. maroon and gold. The lunch- room also was decorated for the occasion. Everyone joined in the tun. Our Model Queen Our homecoming queen tor the year, Miss Carol Carlson. was very active in all school affairs. She is a sports-minded girl and has taken many high honors in ski jumping. Carol will always be remembered tor her pleasing That Knight of Old smile, her personality, and her ability to make friends. As a member ot both the school's marching band and the orchestra, Carol plays the flute and the piccolo. Recently she was a contest- ant on Cedric Adams' Talent Show pro- gram and won a chance to try at the SI,OOO scholarship award. May I have this skate? Mr. Halron, Dvorak l've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm Winter Carnival The event of the year with the most suspense was the Annual Winter Carnival. There were five contestants for king, and no one knew who was the lucky person until the actual crowning. The candidates were taken to Sibley Field on a decorated, horse-drawn sleigh. There Dean McKinney, the previous year's winner, crowned Curt Nelson. King of the Carnival. After the crowning, Curt, in the royal robe, took his seat on the ice throne while the runners up- Wendy Ottum, John Cannon. Ray Johnson, and Glen Koepke--were seated next to him. The festivities of the afternoon supervised by Sam Halron lking on skatesi were speed racing, figure skating, and couple and group skating. In the speed racing Marlys Nelson and John LeBoutillier took the honors for the twelfth grade, Jean LeBoutiilier and Howie Johnson for the eleventh grade, and Sally Staf- ford and Bill Sandberg for the tenth grade. The participants for the figure skating were Pat Neil and Nancy Dvorak. Second time winners, Jean LeBoutillier and her brother John. took the honors for couple skating. Another event was the broom and volley ball. The regular hockey game between the alumni and the R.H.S. team finished the afternoon's activities. The day was highlighted by a Snow Slide dance held in both gyms and a program dur- ing which the awards were given to the after- noon winners. The weather was cold but every- one was kept warm by Sam's enthusiasm. Carnival King and Court Kocpke, R. Johnson, C. Nelson, Cannon, Ottum. E701 M .lon uory Class Banquet Gold decorations in the forms of carts, air- planes, and covered wagons highlighted the table decorations and presented the appropri- ate Centennial theme for the annual January banquet. Since gold was discovered in i849 and Minnesota was made a territory in l849, the ornaments served a two-fold purpose. The wall decorations were made by a committee under the direction of Miss Milsten. With the old-time dancers, Paul Bunyan himself, and the wild atmosphere including log cabins and trees, the contrast between I849 and i949 was very realistic. Airplanes and all of man's modern inventions and conveniences indicated prog- ress made since l849. The decorations fit in well with the class motto, Tonight we talie off -Where will we land? As tradition allows, master of ceremonies, Jack Stiehm, conducted the program. The fare- well address was delivered by the IZA presi- dent. Rog Larson. I2B president, Tom Medvec, Teddy Tradition R. Larson, Medvec. l Umm-Looks Good Bell, M. Anderson, Marshall. Sign Mine? R. Johnson, Bronce, Rustad. received the Teddy dressed in the class colors, wine and grey. After the ceremonies the Last Will and the Prophecy were read by various members of the class. A humorous poem writ- ten and delivered by Wes Anderson was a center attraction. It featured the faculty and an anecdote about each. These stories got laughs from both students and teachers. There were I5O hungry people who were served delicious turkey and all of its trimmings by the l2B's. An evening of dancing and games followed the banquet dinner for the grads. . Coffee, Grandma?
