X , , . , .' J ,fam 1 S... x ik One ot the major objectives ot a high school education in a democracy is training tor citizenship. A good citizen is an informed, intelligent person. Hence it is proper that the school otter students a varied and rich curriculum, and practice in selt-government as a preparation tor intelligent citizenship. A good citizen must be a good leader and a good follower in a democracy where the will of the majority is law. Practice in the at- tairs ot the school should be tollowed by practice in the common attairs ot neighborhood and business. The best intermediate step atter graduating trom high school is active membership in the alumni association and work there to improve the school and the citizenship ot that school. Our citizenship in America is made up ot people from ditterent races with clitferent experiences. That is a great asset which we should tully appreciate since every racial group brings us ideas, gifts, and abilities usetul in a democracy. The good citizen, then, must be intelligent enough to be appreciative ot every racial contribution and tolerant ot their ditterences. There is no place for intolerance ot any kind in a democracy. Races and nations with long experience in self-government have taught us methods ot cooperation in work and government. Great success has come from democratic organization in industry where employers and employees work, own, and govern together. Co- operative ettorts in our various service groups in school give prac- tice in the application ot such democratic principles in prepara- tion tor later participation in the democratic way ot lite. It is time tor properly trained and educated citizens to assume the responsibilities ot government in all its branches. The aim ot the school is to make our best leaders, organizers, and thinkers wish to otter themselves tor public service tor the common good, as a civic duty, in return tor the privileges ot a tree public school education. The leadership ability that has been developed at school must not be wasted. In conclusion, what is a good citizen? He is one who practices the unseltish sharing ot benetits and responsibilities learned at home. He loves God and keeps His commandments as his church has taught him, and he puts into practice the admonition to be his brother's keeper. He makes use ot the accumulated knowledge and experience the school otlered him, and he applies in his daily lite the principles ot good democratic government and social co- operation learned in practice at school. My greatest wish and hope, therefore, is that Roosevelt students be good citizens. cw W VOVL ZVWCVL .K K X X H N f-My I R3 M x QQ . ,Q X? xi 5 E V X 1? Council Acts as Assistant Directors The Student Council represents the selt-government ot the students ot Roosevelt High School. It is important not only tor the usetul service which it renders, but also tor the treedom which it typities. The Council representatives are elec- ted according to classes. Until this spring tour members were elected trom the IOB and IOA classes, six trom the IIB and IIA classes, and eight trom the IZB and IZA classes. A new amend- ment which was added to our constitu- tion last tall has changed a part ot this procedure. Now each junior high school elects one representative trom its 9A class to serve in the Student Council during the tenth grade. 11191 The Student Council was organized in I924 under Mr. von Levern, our prin- cipal, who was at that time the assist- ant principal ot the school. Johnson, Forensic League Proves Good Talkie The National Forensic League at Roosevelt has brought much honor to our school: tor our chapter is one ot the two chapters in the country that has at- tended all nation-wide tournaments. The group was organized in l93O, un- der the auspices ot Mr. Qsterhus, who has continued as the organization's competent adviser. Membershipinto the chapteris earned by points. Twenty points are required tor entrance. These points may be ob- tained only through inter-school compe- tition in debated and in oratorical and declamatory contests. Everytime a student enters a contest he receives a certain number ot points. When a total ot titty points has been E221 won, a degree ot honor is awarded. One hundred points earns a degree ot excel- lence: one hundred and titty points, a degree ot distinction. lt a student earns as many as one hundred and titty points, he may be awarded the National For- ensic League pin. This pin is well-worth a student's ettort, tor it is a silver pin with a ruby center. The National Forensic League encour- ages a student to participate in various types ot spealcing. lt recognizes a stu- dent's etiorts when they are creditable. Hi-Y Delegates Attend Congress Any IOB boy who is interested in the Y. M. C. A. should not deprive himselt ot the pleasure ot joining the Roosevelt Chapter ot the l-li-Y. The purpose ot this club is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community high standards ot Christian character and leadership. This organization was tounded in l922 under the auspices ot the Y. M. C. A. in cooperation with the school. It is just as active today as it was then. During the past year the club sent several dele- gates to the National l-li-Y Congress which was held at Berea, Kentucky. lt also gave an all-school party at the Uni- versity Y. M. Cf. A. Moreover it consid- ers various matters pertaining to the E231 personal and school lite ot members in its regular meetings. At present the l-li-Y boys operate the second-hand bookroom which is a great help to the school. And last, but tar trom least, during the coming year the l-li-Y has the splen- did aim ot trying to maintain and to improve its worthwhile purpose. To carry out this purpose they plan to sponsor a Liet Erikson program during the coming year. They are also planning a declamatory contest. During the past year the Norse Club has accomplished many worth while projects, such as selling caps tor Home- coming and sponsoring movies. One ot the important events each year is the Swedish-Norse basketball game. For the past tour years, the Swedes have won: so the Scandinavian dolls, Olat and Martha, have been in the possession ot the Swedish Club. The Norse men have very tirmly resolved, however, not to let this game be won by the Swedes next year. The members ot the club have, like- wise, sold buttons admitting spectators to the tair grounds to see the Crown Prince and the Princess ot Norway, who will be in Minneapolis in June. Pilots Usher at Premier Performance The organization ot the Pilots was tounded in l927 under the leadership ot Sheldon Ostroot and David Plett. Mr. Schultz has been the adviser ot the club from the beginning. Although it is the wish ot many to become a member ot this time organization, membership in the Pilots is very limited. Six IZA boys and girls, tive l2B boys and girls, tour l lA boys and girls, and three llB boys and girls, making a total ot thirty-six members. Each member must be elec- ted into the organization. Although the club has many enjoy- able social activities, it is primarily in- terested in the service it can render to the school. Betore the prospective members are voted upon, tive detinite pledges are read to them, so that they E263 may lcnow exactly what is expected and required ot them. At the initiation these pledges are signed by the new mem- bers. The initiation parties ot the Pilots have always been regarded as rather unusual. They talce place in the evening and carry over into the next day. The club is now going to try to malce the initiation more signiticant. Signing the tive pledges is one step in this direction. As only one candidate in twelve is chosen, it is considered quite an honor to be in the Qui Vive. The prospective members are invited to attend one ot the meetings and atter a briet discus- sion, the members vote on the candi- dates. The initiations ot this senior club are varied and very amusing. The social activities are numerous, in- cluding horseback riding, skating, danc- ing, and parties. ln these social activi- E273 ties members become well acquainted with one another. The meet- ings take place on the tirst Thursday ot each month, and it is at these meetings that plans tor tuture activities ot the club are discussed. The business meet- ing is usually tollowed by a short pro- gram. Under the leadership ot Miss Laird, the club has been active since it was organized in I932. It has grown rapidly these last years, and now numbers over seventy members. ivlfhen the club was tirst organized, the meetings were conducted in French. The purpose ot this club is to encour- age its members to correspond with stu- dents in toreign countries, and through this correspondence, to study their ways ot living and thinking, so that a better understanding toward world peace may be acquired. Any student who wishes to write to boys and girls in toreign countries may join the club, but he must correspond with at least one toreign country while he is a member. Some ot the students in the club correspond with tive or more persons in toreign coun- tries. Although these students receive a 01 great deal ot pleasure in writing, they never tail to get a thrill upon tinding a toreign letter in their mail box when they return home trom school. The club is planning to have speakers trom the Foreign Language Department ot the University at the meetings held every three weeks. Mr. Miller, who has traveled in England and France, gave an interesting lecture on France at the tirst meeting. The club has been consid- ering asking other teachers at Roose- velt, who have traveled during the sum- mer vacations, to talk to the club on the countries they visit. Although it is a new club, Mr. Miller and the members are enthusiastically building it up, and they hope that, with- in the near tuture, it will be one ot the largest and most popular clubs. M. Short Subjects on the Latin Club The Latin pupils maintaining high scholastic averages have the privilege ot joining Roosevelt's active Latin Club. The Club, lcnown to the students as the Sodalitas Latina, was organized in l93O, and at the present time is under the able leadership ot Miss Redlund. The purpose ot the club is to study the Roman background and Latin classics, and also to encourage fellowship among its members. The club meetings have been well at- tended. It has been the aim ot the vari- ous committees to malce them as inter- esting as possible. A talk about the lite and worlcs ot some Latin scholar is usu- ally given, atter which the members sing Latin songs and play games. ln addition to its regular business E393 meetings, the club has engaged in many social activities. As a matter ot custom the members entertained their mothers with a tea in January I938 and again in l939. Because ot the caretul planning ot these tunctions, both were very suc- cesstul. The group was tounded in l923 underthe direction ot Miss l-layes. Mr. Bertelsen became its capable manager in l93O. Most ot us do not realize all the ettort and work there is connected with our school tunctionsg but without the dili- gent work ot the stage crew, our audi- torium programs, and class plays would not be successtul. This service club ar- ranges the stage and pertorms all gen- eral services. lt also builds and paints the scenery tor plays and operettas. The crew must give lOO per cent co- operation to the students and teachers in order that all may be satistactory. The service that is rendered to the school by the lunchroom supervisors is appreciated by all the students. With- out them we could not have the clean and orderly lunchroom that we all enjoy. Under the capable leadership ot the ambitious and hard working lvlr. l-lalron, the members ot this group are kept very busy during the lunch periods. The many duties ot this group are well pertormed. The main ones being to clean ott the lunch tables and to see the stools are kept in place. Besides these, there are also many minor duties, such as assisting students when they break a glass or plate, and keeping gen- eral order throughout the lunchroom. 335, Onoick, Mr. Halron ladviscrl, Holland, Snyder, Phoenix. 49 Siobcrg, Mobcrg, Miller, Escnncn, Gibson, Horn. First Orchestra Furnishes Atmosphere The First Orchestra has a membership ot ninety-tour students. The members are selected on the basis ot playing ability and orchestra experience. The group has a tull symphonic instrumen- tation, including a harp. The players are attorded an opportunity to play the standard orchestral literature. Each year's repertoire usually includes three or tour symphonies, a violin concerto, a piano concerto, several overtures, and numerous other numbers. The orchestra turnishes music tor all the class plays, and occasionally plays tor an auditorium program. The Theater trom tirst chair players in the large or- chestra, furnishes the musical accom- paniment tor school operettas. This group has made two trips to Faribault, in the past two years, to play tor oper- ettas given by blind students at the State School tor the Blind. Several members ot the First Orches- tra were selected to play in the All-City l-ligh School Orchestra which played at the three-day National Music Clinic held at the University in February. Band and Orchestra Important on Set A comparatively new venture in the Music Department ot Roosevelt High School is the Concert Band. It was or- ganized in I936. At that time the Marching Band and the Concert Band were one. The larger group in the Con- cert Band proved successtul, and in the tall ot that year it was assembled tor its organization. There are no hard and tast rules as to membership. Eligibility depends not upon years ot practice, but upon the student's mastery ot his instrument and upon the type ot instrument which he plays. The Second Orchestra is composed ot thirty-three players ot string instru- ments. These include nineteen violins, tour violas, three cellos, and seven basses. It is in this orchestra that the ambitious player acquires the routine experience which may eventually place him in the First Orchestra. When students tirst enter the Second Qrchestra, they usually have little or no knowledge ot position work beyond the tirst position. They learn to read in the higher position and they learn about various types ot bowing. They likewise receive special ear training. ce G Becklund, Mr. Barnard ldircctorl, M.
