ln one of our basket-ball games this year, our opponents won the game by the very close margin of one point. During the game a player on the opposing team threw the ball from the center of the floor in such a way that it hit the rim of the basket and bounced into the air about fifteenifeet. On its way to theifloor, the ball fell through the basket and thus scored two points for his team. t After the game was over, the followers of our team spoke of this particular play as the lucky basket which won the game by one point for our opponents. It is not only in athletic contests that the element of luck plays its part in the determination of victories and defeats. ln the great game of life we find that luck plays a very important part in many contests. Sometimes one's entire career may be changed for better or for worse by one single incident. It was just a chance meeting between an Episcopalian rector and Dale Carnegie in a dingy caboose of a South Dakota freight train that led the author of the popular book, How to Win Friends and Influence People, to change his whole life's work. As the author of this book and as a teacher of public speaking, this man is today known by millions of people for his great success. ln order that the graduates of our school may be more certain of success in life, it is of vital importance that they make the margin between victory and defeat in all that they do so wide that the element of luck cannot change the final outcome from victory to defeat. This can be accomplished only by giving the very best they have throughout their entire life's career. To falter or to neglect even for a single moment might lead to failure instead of success.
