1968 ROUGH RIDER Roosevelt High School 4020 Indianapolis Boulevard East Chicago, Indiana Volume 32 Construction abruptly shattered the calm atmosphere ° at Roosevelt. Cranes, tractors, and working men invaded Pulling together... our land, digging and errupting the soil. Deliveries of bricks, nails, metals, glass—all stored in our cafeteria— made it impossible to use. An area of discomfort and humor also confronted students who desired the use of north-end washrooms. The attention of students was sometimes centered in listening to the droning of drills, the buzzing of saws, and the maddening pounding of hammers. Teachers voices were in competition with the sounds of progress. Individual participation creates unity. Individuals exist in relation to others. One of the best parts of being human is being able to form friendships which will endure through time. These friendships come when people toil and laugh and pull together. Whether you are leading the yells on the floor or screaming from the sidelines you are part of the spirit which pervades R.H.S. The freshmen started early in putting together their float Homecoming pre-festivities began long before the week of the game. The class officers of each class got their committees together in the first weeks of the summer vacation. Plans of car washes, bakesales, and rummage sales were all discussed in hope of raising the desired money to build the traditional homecoming parade float. Long hours of planning and creating took up the time of many dedicated students. Sometimes arguments, hurt feelings, and disappointments hindered the progress of the project; but the spirit and hope for a first place award kept students working together toward the big day. Memories of class meetings will always stand out in the student’s minds. Above all, the students and sponsors will always remember working together to achieve one main goal. The Junior Science Club, spon- sored by Mr. Bork, worked on projects relative to biol- ogy. They centered projects around plant and animal life. The Senior Science Club members, under the direction of Mr. Marsh, did experiments on light diffusion and mutations of white mice. Working with precise scientific instruments, the members learned about the complex aspects of science. Jo Anne Kozlowski and Tim Simpson kept the area well informed through the Hammond Times weekly “Youth Pages.” This year the Rough Writer dazzled everyone with its pictures and articles. Many facets of RHS life were explored in the newspaper. A distinctive feature was “Dear Olea,” our answer to Ann Landers, who offered solutions to unusual problems. “Showboat’s Sports” gave a fresh slant to Roosevelt's athletic achievements. Pro- ducing a good newspaper was a lot of work, just ask any of the staff members. Under the direction of Mrs. Kon- koly, they realized the steps required in producing a great newspaper. The diligence of the editor, staff members, and sponsor contributed to the paper's success. The 1967- 1968 Rough Writer reaped its rewards through student support. Red Cross aids in Christmas food collection. “Would anyone like to contribute to the Red Cross?” This became a familiar sound as the Red Cross opened the year with a membership drive. By appointing sec- tion representatives the drive reached each student. The total membership drive collection amounted to $114.94. At Christmas time canned goods were collected from the students in an effort to assist the Salvation Army in feeding underprivileged families. As a result the com- munity experienced the satisfaction of giving and receiv- ing in the true Yule spirit. By sponsoring the Brown Derby dance the Red Cross was able to collect funds while providing recreation for RHS students. These groups—Boys Dean’s Assistants, Library As- sistants, Concession Workers, Girls’ Dean’s Assistants, Nurse’s Assistants, and the Bus Committee—have given many services to our school. These students have greatly aided the faculty and school workers. They were chosen on the basis of character, ability, and citizenship. A great deal of responsibility was placed on them, as they were directly responsible to the person whom they served. The band’s many performances added flavor to Roosevelt High’s sports events. Orchestra sounds ranged in spirit from the somber to the boisterous. The orchestra displayed talent throughout the year in assemblies and public performances. Mr. Paul Post conducted ensembles toward awards in the regional and state contests. As a finale “Pomp and Cir- cumstance” resounded from the Roosevelt auditorium as the graduation ceremony signaled the beginning and end of the school year. Under the coaching staff of Lukawski, Holzbach, and Carr, the team compiled an over-all record of eight wins and two loses. Through- out the season the Rider line was one any team would be proud of. Leroy Marsh, Mike Dudek, and Charlie Stupic, all in their second year as starters, led the blocking. To aid the running attack of the Riders surprise pass plays were used to keep the defensive teams off guard. George Boudi did a fine job throwing the ball to ends Mark Grant and Dwight Scott who each caught three touchdown passes. The Riders won the N.W.1.HLS. Championship by defeating Valpo. The game saw Kenny Woods tie a championship contest record by scoring 4 touchdowns. The Riders won twenty-one straight games and were rated the number | team in the state of Indiana at the end of the regular season. The Riders were a team built around seven players: Matt Julkes, Tom Morris, Randy Drlich, Jim Bradley, Lonnie Randolph, Casey Malek, and George Jackson. Fred Gibbs, John Skrundz, Greg George and Steve Spencer also provided the Riders with help. Matt Julkes, the team’s leading scorer and rebounder during the sea- son, was lost to the Riders for the last four games be- cause of a fractured foot. Two of the Riders twenty-one victories were down in Vincennes, Indiana, where the Riders defeated North Vernon and Vincennes for the Holiday Tournament. The season saw the Riders defeat cross-town rival Washington 59-55.in a game played in a jam-packed Rider gym. The Riders started a basketball fever in the school and city that had everyone talking about them. They were ridiculed for having a patsy schedule. They were a team that only went seven men deep and were called a team with a lack of height. The Riders, however, played teams that were much taller than they were and they still won. They won games with 3 starters out of the game because of fouls. The Riders played basketball games under many crowded conditions. They played Tolleston before an all Tolleston crowd with maybe 10 Rider fans there. The Riders went to Vincennes and played before 2 jam-packed Vincennes crowd and went on to win in Rider style. The “67-68” season saw the Riders set many school records. The Riders broke the school scoring record of 106 points by beating Highland 112-51. This season was the first time any Rider team had ever been ranked in the top ten, and also the first time a Rider team had been ranked in the number one spot. It was also the first time any Rider team has gone undefeated. The Riders entered the state tournament 20-0. Their first opponent was Andrean which the Riders crushed 79-57. They then advanced to the semi-finals and lost to the Senators 74-63. This loss ended the basketball season in which the Riders worked hard to earn the top spot. The Riders started off the season winning their firs? six games; however, they went into a tail spin and lost their next four conference games. N for East Chicago youth principal Edward J. Baa The responsibility for the education of East Chicago's youth rested upon administrators, teachers, and citizens alike. The chief administrator was Mr. Ernest R. Miller, alumnus of Washington High School, who belonged also to Roosevelt where he was once a teacher and foot-ball coach. Aiding him in his task of planning far-reaching policies were his assitant, Mr. John Patrick and his con- sultant, Mr. Dan Simon. Meetings and tireless investiga- tions of such school questions as over-crowding and government resources for purchasing curriculum mate- rials fell to the directors and supervisors. The Board of Education kept alert to all policy and procedures directly affecting East Chicago school children. The Junior Class, although it was the smallest class at RHS, had very big plans. They started the year by work- ing steadily on their Homecoming float. The theme was, “Top Those Lions”. There was a long wait for the arrival of class rings featuring an oval stone with no embellishment. With the help of their sponsor, Mr. Kucinski, the ju- niors worked to plan for the 1968 prom which would be a “last” for the seniors and a “first” for the juniors. More than anything else, the juniors looked forward into their Senior Year at RHS. They started off the summer by raising money they earned and immediately started making plans for their class float entry for the Homecoming Parade. Their effort was tremendous in putting together “Beat Em to the Punch.” The class deserves much praise. The sophomores were represented in all phases of R.H.S. life by being involved in all activities. Soon they will become the backbone of our student body, varsity squad, and honor society.
