The Rough-Riders, under the very fine coaching of Chet Lukawski and his very able assistants, Carr, Holzbach and Wietecha, again finished with an outstanding season record. This year’s record was six wins, two losses and one tie. This record in itself is not necessarily indicative of the fine play nor the outstanding coaching necessary for such an achievement. This team was able to rank fourth in the statewide poll of all the teams in the state of Indiana. Many — were bestowed upon a number of individual ball players, but as is the case in any successful endeavor, there is no gubekitabe for teamwork. We can all be proud of this squad because it displayed tremendous teamwork throughout the year. Head Coach Chet Lukawski VARSITY RESULTS Team Opp. Highland 0 Hamm. Tech 20 Hamm. Clark 6 Hamm. Good blocking by our veteran line and fine running by our swift backfield assured us a win and a chance to prove ourselves. Quarterback John Plesniak proved capable of leading the team, and with linemen like Goral, Kusiak, Prusiecki and Elias Hardy, the Riders looked forward to a suc- cessful season. With one game under its belt, the squad eagerly awaited its first conference game with a better than average Hammond Tech team. Hammond Tech 21; RHS 14 An exceptionally strong Tech team invaded the Roosevelt gridiron and stunned the “Big Red’”’ by handing them their first loss. Roosevelt showed a well-balanced offensive attack, but Hammond got to our defense and beat us for the first time in the history of the two schools. Despite fine running and accurate punting by Roosevelt, the final score was 21-14 in favor of Hammond Tech. RHS 26; Clark 6 After slipping and sliding a full second half, the Riders evened their conference record with a 26-6 win over Hammond Clark. The pioneers held the Riders scoreless in the first quarter, but early in the second quarter, Cliff Hardy returned a punt 40 yards to start things moving. Clark scored in the fourth quarter, but touchdowns by George Julkes, Rich Nawrocki and another by Hardy padded the lead and gave the muddy Riders a sure win. RHS 14; Hammond High 0 A record at Roosevelt field witnessed as the Rough Riders defeated a strong Hammond team 14-0 and brought their season record to 2 wins and 1 loss. Roosevelt played well even though fumbles plagued the team effort. A touchdown pass to Cliff Hardy put the first figures on the scoreboard and a plunge by Plesniak assured the win. Lineman Helmut Goral highlighted the evening with fine punting and two conversions. RHS 42; Emerson 6 After an open date, our Riders came back strong and rolled over our Gary foes in a parents’ night victory, 42-6. Coach Lukawski played some 55 boys in the high scoring game. Everyone got into the act with the third team making a touchdown and showing great promise for next year. The win gave the Riders a 4 and 1 record for the year. Morton 27; RHS 13 Roosevelt took it on the chin for the second time this year and aided Morton in its quest for number one honors in the state. Credit must be given to the linemen, however, for their terrific blocking and tackling. The governors recovered four Rider fumbles in key positions to set up their scoring, and they also recovered one of their own in the endzone on a disputed play that put the game out of reach. RHS 138; Whiting 13 The Oilers caught the Riders in a moment of depression and surprised us with a 13-13 tie after a shocking loss to Morton. Roosevelt had a hard time getting started and at one point found itself with a first and fifty-one situation. George Julkes scored first for the Riders and a punt return by Rich Nawrocki ended it for the evening. Whiting scored on the ensuing kickoff and the game ended in a 13-13 tie. RHS 27; South Bend St. Joseph 6 With determination in their hearts, the Riders took to the field for revenge on last year’s loss to the state champs, St. Joseph. The hard work paid off not only by giving the Riders a 27-6 win, but also by giving them state-wide recognition and personal satisfaction. A miscue in the Roosevelt secondary gave St. Joe its only touchdown in what turned out to be the best played game of the season. Consistency in the backfield and outstanding line play all added up to the well rounded attack led by co-captains Plesniak, Cliff Hardy, Goral, and Elias Hardy. This win also helped to put the Riders back on the winning track. RHS 27; East Chgo. Washington 6 Having gotten the word from Coach Lukawski that this was one of the games toward which we had been pointing all year, the squad decided to go out and beat its cross-town rival, and it did so by a score of 27-6. A slow start gave Washington a slight edge, but Roosevelt’s ability to capitalize in key situations gave them a very respectable 27 points and the “Brown Derby” for at least another year. Roosevelt substituted freely in the third quarter with next year’s probable starters running the offensive attack for most of the second half. It felt good to end the season on a winning note . especially by beating the Washington Senators. Coach Ray Walker’s lads put forth an amazing effort and almost proved to be the surprise team of the year. The Rough Riders displayed a tremendous amount of aggressiveness and willingness to win. This was quite evident by the overall season record. During the season the Rough Riders won 15 games while only losing five, and the five losses were to such teams as Washington, Froebel, and Hammond High—all highly rated teams. Among the victories were two in the Christmas tourney over Calumet and Whiting. We now have another beautiful trophy in our trophy case. Several honors were bestowed upon several of our team members. Bruce Austin was one of the top individual scorers in the region. Charles Tucker and George Julkes were selected to the sectional All-Star team. Throughout the season the Riders displayed a talent for “rising to the occasion.” Cliff Hardy and Helmut Goral also contributed greatly to the cause. In addition, Matthew Julkes, Henry Malek, and Randy Drlich came off the bench and helped pull us through. With the addition of George Julkes after mid-season, the Riders did well in the sectional tournament, but lost out in the final game of the sectionals to East Chicago Washington, 80-69.
