IN MEMORIAM HARRY APOSTLE Mr. Apostle was energetic, deter- mined and persevering. He was exacting in his reguirements as to scholarship, classroom conduct, and the development o! good study ha- bits. The student in his class knew what he was to do and did it. For this Mr. Apostle merited and received the respect and admiration of his pupils. His entire service in Fast Chicago was given to Roosevelt High School where for a number of years he had been departmental chairman of Natural Science, but he assisted generously on many com- mittees. His passing left us without another one of our instructors school- ed in the philosophy that you had to give to get. ANNETTA SPECTER Annetta Specter loved learning and fostered this love for learning in her students — there are now members on our own faculty who. as her pupils, felt her influence. She gave of herself to the community and school. And yet her work went further than classroom teaching for she was active in all school enter- prises. Miss Specter had special pleasure, however, in her ability to develop pupil thinking by question- ing. persuasion and by considera- tion. She had. also the quality of showing personal talents, in making their abilities grow and helping them achieve a measure of success. Annetta Specter lived a full and rich life of giving. IN COMMEMORATION Composed and read by Miss Swatts the day the Y-Teens planted two trees in memory of Miss Specter and Mr. Apostle. Somewhere There is a lonesome place Where once small seedlings bedded fragile root In sandy loam And stretched lean trunks with easy grace In quest of growth In far-off forest home. Transplanted here with humble rites They mark our loving, living memory Of two Who late have left a lonesome place In hearts of us that knew Their constancy. Today We dedicate the legacy Each gave. We plant a tree? I say We plant a shade Which hallows teachings, broad and boundless As eternity: We plant a beauty That commemorates Their immortality. F. Isabelle Swatts April 23. 1950 Page Eleven
