1924 1949 The lxrst sectron of our school was begun tn 192-1 and m March 1925 under the leadershlp of Prmclpal Roy W lark 437 Junro hrgh puprls and 22 teachers from McK1nley marched proudlx down Magoun Avenue to the new Theodore Roosevelt Hlgh School burldmg Out of that group of 22 teachers 9 are st1ll tn the system Seven are on the Roosevelt faculty namely Mlss Owen Mrs Henry Mr Anderson Mr Boroughs 1V'r Mu phy Mr Austln cmd Mr Bunker Pearl Bell and Nancy Dunn are at Washington Htgh Also out of that happy group of youngsters who marched down Magoun on that memorable day n March 1 25 tue Ruth Nassau Ray Walker Margaret Rodda Pete Rucmskx and Ioe Macak are now on our faculty On Iune 7 1929 Roosevelt was commrsstoned as a semor class A hxgh school The hrst graduatrng class composed ol 44 members recerved then drplomas at the Congressronal Church ln Iune 1929 As the years rolled around t1me brougl't many changes and xmprovements to Roosevelt On Sunday November 17 1923 the Board of Educatton Mrs McQua1d Mr Carlson Mr McKenz1e Super1ntendentRossman Pnncrpal Wells and faculty held an Open House to the parents and frrends rn honor of the dedrcatton of the addrtron known as the west wrng The new constructlon contarned 20 classrooms laboratorres equrpped wrth modern machlnes and devrces for lnstructron rn home mechamcs mechanrcal drawtng prrntmg machme shop chemrstry art and home econom1cs The outstandrng achlevement ln 1930 was the admrttance ol Roosevelt Hrgh School to the North Central Assocratron of Colleges and Secondary Schools Thrs recogmtron made Roosevelt a fully accredrted member of an assocratron whtch rncludes the pr1nc1pal hrgh schools and colleges rn twenty states As a member of th1s assocratxon the graduates of Roosevelt have preferred standmg rn admrs sron to unrversrtxes and colleges belongrng to thrs assoctatlon and rt also grves the hrgh school the rtght to apply lor membershrp rn the Nattonal Honor Soctety of Secondary Schools Roosevelt Hlgh took another step forward when Mrs Lenora Clark organtzed the Arrston Chapter of the Natronal Hono Socrety of Secondary Schools Chapter No 981 was granted Aprrl 10 1930 On Mav 14 1930 the lollowrng charter members were tnducted lean Barr Grlbert Brckell Wlllram Brtska Evelyn Davrs Thora Decker Helen Ferns Vlrgmla Frsher Clara Wrlson George Lortz Margaret Mullrgan Cllfford Carmlchael Leonard Byman and Sylvta Peterson Today 501 of the graduates have been members ol the Arrston Chapter As our school populatton mcreased Roosevelt expanded In 1992 Mr Russell Myers became pr1nc1pal ln 19,17 another addrtrcn mcludrng the audrtorrum gymnastum rooms for machme shop power wood shop and auto shop was constructed Thls new addltlcn zncreased th recreatronal faclhtres of the school not only to our puprls but also to out of school vouth and adults thus reltevmg the pressure of delmguency areas and enrlchlng the lersure tlm ol all partxcl pants The school classrooms laboratorres and audrtorrum are used by adults to enrrch therr lersure trme actrvrtres Such wtde uses of the school plant enrlch the lrfe of the communrty Today the student body rs taught by a faculty of 47 mstructors wrth Mr Herbert Lahr as pr1nc1pal and Mr Fred Pop Haynes as assrstant pr1nc1pal Rooseveltrans can be lustly proud of therr many achrevements rn athletlcs vocatronal tramlng muslc and poetry apprectatmon For a quarter of a century our school has stood rn our commumty as a symbol of Amerxcan democracy The graduates have gone 11' all dxrectlons and 1nto many lrelds of endeavor some have succeeded rn lndustry art and polxtrcs and some have pard the upreme sacnhce on the battle ltelds God grant that the world may tmd peace order that our school along wxth all the schools of the world may contmue to extend to every chrld the opporturlty of growth to hrs full physlcal rntellectual moral stature and becomlng a respons1ble and valued member of a soctety of equals , , , T . . . , 1. 1 , . . . 1 C 'v , A , F . . .
