V IT Q lltneruke The Power The American people have long been influenced by the power of the press for the newspaper occupies a place among the institutions of society along with the famrlx the church and the school Newspapers have be come a tradition accepted and regarded much the same as our freedom When the Constitution of the United States guaranteed our freedom of the press Thomas Jefferson made a statement that expressrs our whole idea The basis of our government being the opinion of the people the first object should be to keep it right and were it left to me to decrde whether we should have a government wthout newspapers or newspapers without a government l should not hesitate for a moment to prefer the latter Without newspapers the American people could not poll an intelli- gent vote or even carry on an intelligent conversation. Aside from bring- ing us spectacular news stories breath taking events and news of world wide interest the daily papers carry warm human interests stories and and dealings of our neighbors.
