Dressed in cap and gown, she reluctantly turned her steps tom-.rqrra the auditorium wnere in a iew rrirr'u'ws she would receive her diploma. As she walked along, rrrerrxrries ct her whole school career flashed tiircugi. her rrrind, like scenes on a rrtotran rip: ture screen. It seemed odd to her that tziese very halls, which after six years were now ti second home to her, could have puzzled her so rnuch when she was a seveztr grader. They had seemed so long, big, with no end to the number of ciczprziz. Being so little, Rosie rernemhored lrow she could never make out than rccn. nuznbers. How t.rankful she was fcr' ical rig sister , who comforted and Qulflfiii through her bewildering first years, fur the smiles the big sister gave :ter wi ' H comforted her so much. Wl1err Rosie became a FRFSHMAN she felt very big time for now ner class had a voice in the student gov' ernment. ln fact the boy who sat nexf to her in English, Ruffy Rider, was a freshnran senator and also her secret flame. Rosie also can remember how dumb she acted at her first football games. Never knowing what was going an. She must have been a horrible pest to the unfortunates who sat near her. Up and down, in and out, she just wouldn't sit still. Candy, port, cracker jack, tRosie's face grew red wrfh sharnel. Ruffy Rider didn't know girls exist- ed, so to her freshman party Rosie re luctantly went with Frankie Preshrnan- ski, who was just a sample of a fella. Rosie couldn't wait till the ordeal was over, Rosie's SOPHOMCRE year was most trying, she didn't know whether to act like a kid or a grown up and so she combined the two. Her clothes started to take her attention and she began to watch the older girls and dress like them. The one important thing that hap- pened in Rosie's SOPHOMGRE ye' that she can never forget was the wi:tQ' ning of the basketball tourny . ln Rosie's IUNIOR year, her secret flame, Ruffy Rider, began to notice fuer. ln fact she was his date for alrrxcst everything, including the prom. Sire will never forget when they got their National Honor Society pins on tlze same day. They were both so proud and happy. That same year she was also made a Girl Counselor, and this made her very happy, to think how she might help some younger girl, as she was helped by her big sister . Our team was composed of some of the nicest hard-hitting boys you would ever want to meet, under the leadership of Coach Rucinski, Coach Sabik, Coach Miller, and our football captain, Carl Nestor. On September 17 the Rough Riders lost their first game of the season to the Hammond Wildcats with a score of 19-6. Emil Zych made a fine showing when he went over for a touch- down near the end of the game. On September 24 the Rough Riders defeated the Tolleston Raiders at Gleason Field with a score of 33-U. That was really a game, with scoring honors going to Emil Zych and Sonny Har- ness who made two touchdowns each and foe Paratore who made one. The Rough Riders scored their second conference victory by defeating Horace Mann 14-9 on October 2. This was also the Rough Riders first home game of the season. Horace Mann put up a strong fight but it was not good enough to stop the Rough Riders. Roosevelt defeats Roosevelt of Gary by a score of 13-7 on October 8. This was a non-con- ference game but it was a good one. October 16 was a lucky day for the Rough Riders when they shattered the Whiting Oilers with a score of 12-6. This put Roosevelt in a three-way tie for the Western division of the N.1. H. S.C. October 22 the Rough Riders were defeated 14 to 34 by Clark Pioneers. Defeat could not keep the Rough Riders down. On November 5 they defeated Hammond Tech by a score of 34-14. l At last! Roosevelt vs. Washington! This year was a lucky year for the Rough Riders. For the first time in 7 years the Rough Riders defeated the Senators by a score of 34-14. Now the brown derby is back where it should be. The Roosevelt-Washington game was the lcst game of the season. What a season it was too! Not only do we have our players to remember for their excellent playing, but we also have some special memories we shall not want to forget. Roosevelt played hard and were Conference and City Champs. For the first time Whiting High School awarded their oil can to Roosevelt. This was a special honor because Roosevelt is the first school to receive the oil can from Whiting, This year's team was the first team to hcve four of its players mentioned for the State Team: All Sffcrte: Sam Gray, Carl Nestor, Ralph Arrigi, and Fred Viana. 52 lv 5 5,ff Wx , S- 3, Q -' 71 L - V qv- Q N , Q YU A ! VARSITY BASKHltAll TEAM A small, fast, aggressive Rough Rider basketball team, made their debut against the Ham- mond Tech Tigers and dropped the opener by a score oi 43 to 23. The Riders took the next game from the Gary Horsemen. Handicapped by the lack of height, Roosevelt dropped the next two games to Whiting Qilers, and Froeble Blue Devils. Coach Sabik's boys then dropped three in a row to Adams of South Bend, Emerson, and Washington, Phenomenal speed and amazing accuracy from the field, put Roosevelt in the victory column again as they defeated Tolleston of Crary. On lanuary 22, the Riders traveled to Robertsdale where they met the Clark Pioneers, and dropped another one. Hammond High then visited Roosevelt, and went home licking wounds of defeat. The Riders tried hard to stay in the winning column, but failed in the attempt as they drope ped two more to Whiting and Emerson. ln the next game Roosevelt Rough Riders got revenge as they beat Hammond Tech. Lew Wallace and Washington paid a visit and returned triumph- antly. The Riders finished the season with 7 'victories against lO losses. The Riders met an underrated Edison Eagle five in the opening tussle of the tournament and came out on the short end of a 41 to 36 score. The Riders lose three men: Ed Zabek, Chester Harness, and Bill Thomas, who are seniors. Emil Zych, Bob Shinkan, Tony Valentino, Ralph Arrighi, and Alvie McMillan will be back if the Army or Navy doesn't take them first. Opp. R. H. S.
