Reviewing tl1e Atlmletic Season by Harry Buslw I The Roosevelt Wrestling Team of l933 34 enjoyed the most unusual and outstanding season in the his tory of wrestling In our institution lts record for the season is indeed one of which we are proud Our team defeated the best mat teams in the entire region I The grapplers opened the season with the Washington Senators and emerged with a smashing 43 3 vnctorv this triumph automatically gave the Riders full title to the City Championship The team then traveled to Chicago where it en gaged the powerful Trlden Tech squad Here the Riders displayed the best form of the season and succeeded whrtewashing t 40 O however in the return match the Techmen displayed some hid den strength and succeeded tying the score This match was followed by a brilliant -ll 5 victory over South Bend I Our team then played hosts to angular meet which we won with ease the grapplers compiling a total of 82 points I The ambition of the team was fulfilled when it traveled to the An nual State Tournament held Bloomington Indiana and finished in a tie for first place Joe rxa James Sefton John Caunay and Wal ter Czerwinskr swept bv all the op position In their division and be came State Champions I This spectacular wrestling team consisted of James Sefton Joe Brxa Walter Czerwlnski John Ginay Page Nineteen Matt Kaszw barney Mnich Walter Dortlak Joe Lokanc Jack Hupke Peter Vuchrnas Anthony Zelenclk and John Kartz I The organization of Roosevelt Olympic Association dates back to the tall of i928 This association serves as a central Organization for girls athletics in the school I The sportheads elected by the members of the R OA regulate a point system through which awards are achieved I In September Coach Overpeck s girls started the athletic season with baseball tennis and hockey On November first basketball the queen of girls sports in Roosevelt brought ou for y girls w o were eager to make the varsitv and class teams I The varsity basketball team opened its season with a one point victory over the Alumni the final score was Zi Z0 This victory was followed with a two point victory over the Washington Senator ettes This vrctory qave the Roosevelt girls the City Champion ship I The Junior girls team was out standing in rnterclass competition Whenever the Riderettes met the Senatorettes the competition was exceedingly keen I Girls who won outstanding recog nation in basketball were Mary Mater Carrie Stasko Fern Kerr Margaret Brennock Katherine Gergely Carolyn Korak and Frances Rospond 'Continued on Dane 59' f If xi! jll ll l fi 1 lllllf pn lrI7e . I A tlnge of Autumn IH the aur' Eager students hurrv to answer the flrst call for football candndates Suits are Issued' Grnduron men prac tuce new maneuvers' The season begms' I Beyond a doubt the l933 team was one of the greatest ln the has tory of Roosevelt Hugh School Only four of these teams ever crossed the goal lnne a record of whlch to be proud We made a total of llG ponnts our opponents totaled 3l points I Thus year s team was led by Cap tam Ray Gunderson quarterback who called the signals and showed qulck thlnklng In his cholce of plays Peter Oswego one of the best drop klckers an the reguon also played quarterback At the guards we had Steve Jagaduch Stanley Petropolns Jack Hupke and Adam Macak who did thesr part In break we had Cleo Dlehl and Eddle Rucun sk These boys were especually apt at snaggang passes At tackle we could always rely on John Gunay Delbert Hartlev John Rossman and Joe Lokanc For ball carrners we had the fullbacks Frank Patrick who was chosen on the All State Hugh School football team and Peter Hanes These boys were always good for a few yards when a fnrst touch down was needed Our half backs were Louis Seles Norman Passmore Edward l3akota and Frank Barlog I Our l933 34 basketball team was one of the fznest ever turned out In thus school Although the season S 'ldlpl I ID Passing Plgskmsl Grapplmgl Tossmg Balls' record displays a total of nlne wlns and elght losses lt us a well known fact that fnve of the enght defeats were by the small margin of not more than three points I The Rnders opened their season by defeatung Hammond Tech n very close game wlth the fnnal score 22 20 In the second game of the year we were defeated by Froebel l7 20 on the followvng night we defeated Thornton Fractlonal 46 l7 Valparanso took a thrlllung 20 Zl victory from the Rnders which was followed wlth a 26 24 victory over the Whltlng Ollers The Riders were turned back by Horace Mann Froebel Valparalso and Washington before starting theur flve game wln nlng streak an which they defeated such teams as Whutlng Emerson Horace Mann and Catholnc Central I Roosevelt lost the Cnty Cham puonshlp to Washington ll 34 and game We closed our schedule by trounclng the Hobart Brlckues 33 20 I It would not be falr to close the summary of the season wuthout mentnonung the boys who were re sponsuble for the envnable record In forwards were Cleo Diehl and Frank Patrick who made many needed points dur :ng the season At guard we had John Kowalski Eddue Kumuegl and Stanley Dubls who besudes belng the mann stays an the defense dld a lot to Improve the offense of the team At center we had Eddie Ruclnskx who always trled has best to bring the tnp off to Roosevelt basketball thus year A Pmgc Eughtccn u l I I I I I I A u ' i a I - .
