Realizing that in years to come when Father 'liime's ancient and worn hand has marked off many red and black squares on the checkerboard of life, when graying temples replace our shining black pompadours, and when our thoughts shall be lingering upon bygone days, we can wistfully hope that this book will serve a just and noble purposeythat of supplying the link from the past to the present. Thus it may assist in the remembrance of a mode of life which we here have strived to achieve. wherein tolerance is the design of living. That this design remain the theme of life as we go through it is the prayer of a peaceful world--emphasizing, not mere tolerance of other peoples, but an understanding of them. l.et this book then aid in enshrining in our hearts a true faith in that phrase-All Races, All Religions, Thats America to Nfe. Wlien we chose this greeting' little did we realize that we were opening our door to the crossroads of the world, as at that time national groups seemed so far away that it would be impos- sible for so many different peoples to wend their way by our humble abode, but with the change of time and the advent of travel by air. we now have at our fireside the peoples of the world. ln the friendly chats that are carried on around the glow of our hearth, we have discussed philosophies and customs, and we End that people are not as different as we had supposed. We have learned that we are an integral part of a world organization that must develop a common ground on which the peace of tomorrow can be builtz therefore we chose wisely when we said 'Af'-XI.I. VJlEl.COME. FRANCIS L. DAUGHERTY, fprincipal I I I RosE TAYLOR STELTER, Qirls' cUice-'Principal IF OUR HOUSE is well planned, we must turn out citizens who are capable of dealing with the future, and we must practice in our own minia- ture society the objectives we strive for in a better World. I If our house is to be strong, we must build it on a foundation of human relationships. Here we must practice friendliness, cooperation, un- seliishness, and tolerance and develop the cour- age to sustain us in our beliefs, standing for the things that are right. If our house is to endure, we must carry on the ideals for which We stand, utilizing them out- side of our house and before all people we meet. If we accomplish these things, we have not only built a house, but a boy and a girl and a man and a woman. . THE HoUsE I LIVE IN . . . All the time I am building-building the house I live in-adding to it, tearing it down, improving it, bringing it up-to-date. All that matters is that it becomes more and more livable, more kindly, clean, and sound. The materials I use must be strong, Weathered in wisdom and experience. They must be bound together firmly by honesty. The Whole place must be illuminated by tolerance and understanding. The house I live in may be my home, my school, my city, my country, the world. But the house I live in, first and last, is-myself. GEORGE C. DIRCKX, 'fBoys' CUz'ce-5Pr1'ncipal ead of Our Hou e THEY SERVE AS EEACONS-CASTING ENLIGHTENMENT. THE I-IOUSIE WE LIVE IN often gives us cause to exper- ience many of life's trials and tribulations. We study our lessons and learn of the world around and beyond us, and how others live and work. But, more than that, we learn to work and play together. in harmony with each other. But, of course, we students cannot learn of such impor- tant matters without the guidance of our wise Adminis- tratorf. Under ther watchful eyes, we learn tact and tolerance of beliefs other than our own. We learn the difference between right and wrong. We sometimes chafe under the yoke of discipline placed upon us, wondering why we cannot do as we please. We sometimes even protest vehemently, little realizing the im- prudence of such action. To our unlearned way of thinking, we consider ourselves tlie best judge as to what is right and wrong. Yet a truly learned man of wisdom will admit he knows little, while big blustery men of little knowledge claim they know all. Those who teach us here in our .ill - I , House do not claim to know everything. They have studied long and hard to attain the knowledge they have, and now they wish to impart that know- ledge to us so that we may be better equipped to live in a world that requires only the best from each of us. In years to come, we shall often look back to our school days and smile with fond reminis- cences as we remember our won- derful administration and all it did for us. Our theme, our driving force, will be our goal to become leaders in this world's future. Now the world is a tumultuous scene of political conflicts, instigated by the uncertainty of economic instability. Will these same conditions defeat our efforts? Our job. the task of youth everywhere, is not to succumb to the committed errors of the past, but rather to be progressive in thought, and ever to change our future--our tomor- row. Shall we succeed? Yes, we will, because we must. This is not a determinist's world: it is a living world in which we, as an inalienable right, have the power to de- termine. The coming tomorrow is ours. There- in lies the incentive for us, the Seniors of Roosevelt High School, to make of it what we wish it to be. SENIORS constitute only one section of Roosevelt High School: they are here today and will be gone tomorrow. The Senior Bees along with the other classes are expected to carry on the traditions and high principles maintained by all Roosevelt alumni. From the time a student enters the B-10, he learns to adjust his life to that of those around him. He learns and shows others the way we live, play and work together. Later as as A-l l, the student can whole-heartedly claim for himself a place as an active member of the student body. The peak in the life of any high school student is, of course, the senior year. The Senior Bee is literally pushed to fill the important offices, and he finds him- self in positions using his talents. Graduation grows closer, and, looking back, the student recalls with fond memories the trying times of a lower classman. But he also looks forward to being rewarded by a thin white piece of paper saying .... Graduate of Roosevelt High School. Student government in our house has proven itself to be just what it is-an efficient, democratic program whereby natural leaders are given the opportunity and encouragement to display their abilities. Among the various organizations which constitute our student government is the Student Leadership Class, which plans and executes the school's activities and consists of the elected student body officers and club presidents. Here they learn the devious processes through which a government must act. They pave the way for better progress. The Student Council members are the law-making branch of our student government and make the main decisions, always acting within the limited powers which are assigned them. All chartered club presidents are entitled to membership in the Student Leadership Class, of which Miss Nancy King is the teacher. With a record of student leadership behind them, the student leaders of today may well emerge as the leading citizens of IOIUOITOW. STAGE CREXV Row 1: David Dakos, Lawrence Kalish, Ray Sanchez, Ben Rosen- blum. Row 2: Pudgie Katz, Leo- nard Young, Hank Zipkin, Lucille Abramovitz, Edward Jacobs, Bert Kravitz, Manager. Stage Crew RESOLVED: We won't forget the forgotten-the un- known-the unsung-we'll remember, we'll praise, we'll pay tribute to-our Stage Crew. We know that half the downpouring torrent of ap- plause that ended the plays' ballets, and fashion shows, should have gone to the men behind the scenes. We all know that the program presented to us wouldn't have been quite so enjoyable were it not for the stage crew- Mr. Archy's boys The fellows that worked in the dark recessess of the stage knew they weren't coming in for any applause or appreciation. Theirs was not the glamourous role of star actor, sfinger, performer. They did their job. moved heavy props. set up scenes, dirtied themselves, and worked hard. They did their job realizing that they were doing a thankless job but one that had to be done. They knew the program wouldn't be half as successful as it eventually turned out were it not for their efforts. And out of their eternal loyalty to Roosevelt, they did that job-did it well and admirably. Yes, we will re- member our stage crew. We will remember the many hours put in by them and Mr. Archy. We will not for- get the praise due them, and, when we remember Roose- velt and the enjoyable years spent there, we will reserve a special place in our hearts for the stage crew, our boys. ACTIVITIES The R.O.T.C. has many activities including military. educational. and social. The military conduct of the R.O.T.C. is based mainly on the organization itself. Each year, a Federal Inspection is held in which the United States Army gives this unit and other units a grade based on a standard of proficiency. There are also school competitions to sort out the best unit in Los Angeles. One of these competitions is given by the British Service club, and another is given by the American Legion, Post 368, which is the Blue Devils Trophy. In the educational field there are among the subjects- scouting and patroling. rifle marksmanship, technicalities of rifle fire, and army organizations. To aid them in this work there are training Hlms and field and technical manf uals. Field training helps the R.O.T.C. member in co- ordination ofthe mind and body. In addition there are machine guns, mortars, a bazooka, and training portfolios. The R.O.T.C. Military Ball is the most important social event on the calendar and is a formal dance. The Rough Riders walked all over the Montebello Oil- ers to the tune of 15-ll, for their fourth practice Win., Leaving men stranded on the bases in almost every inning, the Colonels lost their first League game in live years, 10-0, at Huntington Park. After pulling ahead in the first inning the Rough Riders lost a tough one to the Washington Generals for their third league loss. Accounting for four of the Colonels' six runs were Johnny Pena, who knocked in two runs in the big first, and Serna, who smacked a triple to score two Colonels ahead of him. Our inexperienced boys from Fourth and Pickett held their own in the track events and piled up the points in the field events as Klein, Novi- koff, and Berokoff took first in the high jump, shot put and pole vault, respectively. Proving too strong for the locals, the Powerful Jeff team, led by Ed Brent, scored a 75-29 victory. Highlights of the meet was a 6'2 jump by Arnold Klein, who tied for first with Young of Jeff, and a 4.52 mile by Steve Castrellon. Traveling over to Fremont only to be edged out by a well balanced Fremont team, our Rough Riders lost their second dual meet, 73M-2 to 30M. Once again, we outscored our opponents in the field events but didn't have the backing in the track events to sal- vage a victory. With three first places to his credit, U, Ware made a total of 15 points in 100, 220 and Broad Jump to place the Toilers in the winnnig column at the end of the meet. C63-415 .
