Q5 TT Sf F 1943 UHEWUHD The following pages record a very important phase of your life -a time when each and everyone of you played an important role in your high school. That phase is now coming to an end. You are about to enter a gigantic, turbulent world in which each of you will play a tiny but important part. It is up to each of you to augment that role so that you will again be a large, important cog in the great wheel of life. The road is long and wearisome, especially in these uncertain times. When the going is tough, we hope youill look back into these pages and live again the life you led here and realize that somehow, as you were big in a little world, you will be big in a big world. So open again the pages and see yourself at play, at work, in class, at the sports in which you excel, as student, as club member, as leader and, above all, as a friend and neighbor. Q XUNTENTS YUU LEARN YUU AT WUHK YIJU AT PL!-XY YUU PHUBHE55 EDIEATIU To you, Sergeant Souviney, who filled so great a need in the lives of your students, we gratefully dedicate this Annual. lt was you who fashioned ideals i11 the unformed youth of our classes, who helped mold our char- acter. You not only taught us how to live with our fellow students, but with ourselves. Above all you were our Hnest example of the American Way of life. The memory of your friendly guidance, your understanding of our problems, your ever-helping hand, shall remain like a warm, glowing light in every heart, undimmed by the passing of the years. , V SERGEANT JOSEPH SOUVINEY of the United States Army was the leader and friend of the boys of the R.O.T.C. unit of Roosevelt High School from February, 1930, until his untimely death March ll of the present year. Credit for the fine showing must go to Coaches Tom Denney and Ernie Naumann, who built the team from the te11th grade, and worked long after sunset to develop and smooth the natural abilities of a large squad of big heavy boys. As a result, tl1e season be- gan with a wealth of experienced seniors, par- ticularly in the forward wall. Sid Cohen, Kazuo Kasuda, Harry Vartesian, Eddie Infante, Marty Grbovaz, and Vince Basulto are only the vanguard of a mighty host of powerful linemen who alternated durinff the games. D Due to the teamis Southern League record, the All-City selections were invaded by four Roosevelt men. Two of the most exciting duels ever wit- nessed lny lloosevelt students were the two Wasll- ington clashes which saw hoth teams dividing the honors. The first game was won by the llough lliders in a thrilling overtime period, while the second contest was taken hy the Gen- erals in the second overtime period. Other outstanding Colonels who saw much action and hung up many points duri11g the season were Ruhen Cardona, Joe Hirschkowitz, l,eon Bass, Bill Godwin, and lzzy Yedwalsky. Bee Basketball 19111-112 Finishing with a terrific swoosh to wind up second in the Southern Loop race, Coach Reg Andersonis ever improving Bee Baslceteers closed a highly successful cage season with an impressive five out of six victory tool in the last half of the teamjs home a11d travel cam- paign. Hampered by inexperience and lack of prop- er teamwork, Coach Anderson set out to floor a winning quintet but had to sacrifice many games before he could get several combinations of players working smoothly and efficiently. But once the team started rolling it was harder to stop than the llock lsland Express with the local arena being the site of many a fiercely- fought casaba contest between the Teddies and their rivals. Outstanding throughout most of the season were ,loe Nakanishi, Memo Terrasis, Dan Kurily, Tets Fukumoto, J im Barboa, Morris Class, Larry Anisman, Sid Galper, ,loe Chavez, Ernie Mizuno, Palaeido Andrade,Angelo Gomez, and Peter Suarez who played splendid ball considering the various combinations i11to which they were split in nearly every other game. Although the bat- tling Bees did drop the majority of their prac- tice tilts, they proved their real value and ex- hibited stout hearts by their late semester play which was nothing short of miraculous. Al- though a first place berth looked out of the question at the start of the league campaign, the Cees fought and tore their way through a schedule which in- cluded some of the best junior quintets in the city, to go on to victory after winning some hair-line de- cisions in their latter contests. Washington proved to be the Cees toughest opponent and also their chief threat for the league title. Going into the last game with the smooth and well-polished Generals, the Teds and Army boys were deadlocked for first place, and upon this tilt rested either teamls championship hopes. Showing true heart and determination, the Midgetmen fought and conquered the Cherry-tree boys, only after a long and vigorous battle. Leonard Lindenbaum and Marshall Binn also played a great part in the squadis success giving unmeasurable help to Coach Anderson throughout the semester. The real reason for the Cees great season lay in the outstanding playing of Albert Greenberg, Louie Zanotti, Milt Walclinger, Kayoshi Shoda, Herman Vlfolf, Herm Butler, Arnold Click, Leo Miller, and Aramando Lawrence whose great teamwork and in- spirational spirit closed another glorious chapter in Rooseveltis great Cee basketball history. Boys learn to use modern equipment such as is found in most manufacturing plants. Stretchers for the Red Cross, model planes for the Army and Navy, are examples of practical application of skills. O Auto Shop teaches boys not only the approved practices of the trade but also scientific theories of operation of auto- motive equipment. These boys are preparing for work in industry in which there is opportunity for self-advancement as well as assistance in the war. I The Machine Shop course includes training in welding and lathe work which prepares boys for entrance to the Navy and Army. In the days of mechanized warfare this type of train- ing is especially appropriate. This is an example of practical training offered in Vocational classes. I ln this age of electricity training afforded by the Electric Shop is invaluable to the boys whom it attracts. Training in the use of modern equipment supplemented by theory makes this course practical as well as interesting. Radio com- munication is especially emphasized. Prepare Students fer .Inhs I Boys learn theory of flight as applied to Aeronautics in a class in Mathematics as taught by Mr. Stoker. Apparatus allows members of the class to compute effect of forces. Mathematics is an important phase of training for service in aeronautics industries. I Drafting is a vital necessity for students and workers in all lines of industry. Special emphasis is given to aeronau- tics drafting and architectural drawing. Courses of this nature are required of all boys who plan to enter any phase of airplane activity or production. I In Sheet Metal classes the boys make scale layouts for sheet metal jobs, then proceed to complete the job in the shop. This shop has recently added latest equipment for riveting and welding. A class for girls was started this semes- ter to prepare workers for industry. I Because of the importance of Drafting and Mechanical Drawing in all phases of construction and production various classes are organized to afford students opportunity of study- ing specific types of drawing which will best fit into their plans for their vocation. 5 S 4 A.,w..,..4 . 1 WQEW f 1 1 E 1 f , K.
