Autumn dawned with a brilliant array of colors welcoming students back to school. The new school year began much the same as always with the usual hustle and bustle of getting classes, teachers and activities organized. Students returned with much excitement and expectation of the new year ahead. They enjoyed seeing friends and sharing their experiences of the past summer. Sophomores returned in awe of their upcoming high school years while juniors returned with mixed emotions. The seniors were perhaps the most excited and filled with anticipation as they began their last and hopefully most memorable year of high school. 2 3 STUDENT LIFE After School Activities Keeping up with classes five days a week gets pretty hectic. When that bell hits 3:20, everyone scatters. Many students hold after school jobs in order to earn extra money; some stay after school for extra-curricular activities; some rush to catch their buses. Overall, everyone is relieved that the school day has ended. 6 Daily Activities School has really changed this year with the loss and rescheduling of faculty, but the spirit of VHS students is equal to, if not better than it has been in the past. Spirits soar even higher at 3:20, when students eagerly scamper out of school. Lunch time is spent in the cafeteria, down in the library, at Pic- N-Pay, or one of the many hang-outs on the main street. Although school is a lot of work, the friendships made here and memories of the good times go on forever. Homecoming '83 1982 Homecoming was a memorable experience for everyone. The week was loaded with fun-filled events. The highlights came on Friday when Georgia Dostal and Bob Eilertson were crowned King and Queen. Other members of the Royal Court were: Chuck Eaton, Marga- ret Weir, Jim Erickson, and Beth Carlson. The event perhaps most awaited was the winner of the float deco- rating contest. All classes worked diligently the entire week to build their float. The Junior Class of ’84 came out on top with the slogan “Beary the Bears” which is exactly what VHS did that Friday evening by defeating the Eveleth Golden Bears once again. It was truly a week to remember. 10 Home '83 11 Student Opinion Songs Jack and Diane ... 56% Eye of the Tiger ... 20% Hurts so Good ... 14% Hard to Say I'm Sorry ... 10% Movies E.T. ... 52% Rocky III ... 27% Porky's ... 8 % Stripes ... 8% Female Singers Joan Jett ... 38% Pat Benatar ... 35% Olivia Newton John ... 14% Stevie Nicks ... 13% Albums American Fool .. . 38% Asia .. . 36% Get Lucky ... 17% Hi Infidelity ... 9% Actors Burt Reynolds ... 38% Sylvester Stalone ... 32% Tom Selleck ... 22% Robert Redford ... 8% Food Pizza ... 32% Tacos ... 31% Spaghetti . . . 23% Steak .. . 14% Actresses Bo Derek ... 32% Jane Fonda ... 28% Brooke Sheilds ... 21% Stephanie Powers ... 19% Day Of The Week Friday ... 8% Saturday ... 36% Thursday ... 12% Wednesday ... 4% Holidays Christmas ... 45% New Years Eve ... 42% Summer ... 7% 4th of July ... 6% After School Activity Eating ... 31% Playing Football ... 25% Watching T.V. ... 23% Volley Ball ... 21% Male Singers John Cougar .. . 39% Rick Springfield ... 22% Billy Squier ... 17% Frank Zappa . .. 22% Classes Study Hall ... 31% Math . . . 28% English ... 24% Choir ... 17% Hang-outs McDonalds ... 37% Main Street ... 29% Park .. . 26% Home ... 8% Groups Rush ... 42% REO Speedwagon ... 36% Re-Play ... 12% Go-Go's ... 10% Colors Green ... 32% Blue ... 30% Red ... 26% Purple ... 12% Pieces Of Dreams Prom was an experience to be remembered. The juniors went all out to make Prom extra special. The theme was Pieces of Dreams. As couples arrived they crossed over the bridge into dreamland. The band. Corner- stone, provided the music for the couples to dance the night away. McKenna Studio was on hand to take formal pictures of the couples if they so desired. Following the dance, most went to their favorite restaurants for either a late supper or an early breakfast. The Prom provided a touch of elegance, class, grace, and style to make the school year complete. 14 1) It's a long way down, says Margaret Weir. 2) After a dance, Mr. and Mrs. Hurd decide to take a break. 3) Donna Gaikowski and Dale Dingman seem to be having a good time. 4) Jim Mehle helps with the preparations before the dance. 5) Smile, Miriam, you're on candid camera! 6( Steve Cvek and a friend are sitting down for a rest. 7) Cornerstone kept everyone dancing at the Prom. 8) Everyone looks so happy to be at the Prom. 15 SPORTS SPORTS Young Team Makes Outstanding Effort VHS had a pretty tough season. We had a few bad breaks but were up against tough opponents. At our homecoming game we triumphed over Eveleth as a result of team work and the dedication of our outstanding coaches. The seniors will be missed but the younger players coming up should make next season a great year. 18 1. Catch him before he gets away! 2. The team practices each day after school, running up to 10 miles in one practice. They are coached by Greg Miller. The team competed in several meets, including the Swain Invitational - the largest cross country meet in the United States. The boys were led by varsity runners Dan Squires, Tony Kaskisto, Ron Mattila, Tim Koski, Paul Pollock, Jack Swearingen. Dan and Tony placed in the top 10 in several meets. The girls top runners were Connie Weber and Heidi Gerchman, who placed well in many of their races. Many members of the team continue to train through the winter, and are looking forward to an excellent season next year. 1. Help me, you guys, I can't get my hand out! 2. and the race is on! 3. The team was young but experienced with many returning letter winners. The VHS spikers compiled a record of 18-1. The only loss came to Greenway. A few of the seasons highlights included a first-place finish in the Virginia Invitational, a first-place finish in Sub-Region 4 with a 6-0 record, and a first-round victory over Chisago Lakes in the Region 7- AA tournament. The team consisted of 2 seniors, 11 Juniots, 1 Sophomore, and 1 Freshman. With many returning letter winners next year, the team expects to do well again. Off 1. The Devils' coaches are Thomas Hafdahl and Les Koppendrayer. Although this year's seniors will be missed next year the remainder of the team plus the newcomers plan to give it their best shot. We're sure their hard work will pay off! 1) Boy! Take A Swing At It! With all returning players from the past season, Virginia was expected to do very well. The team took first place in the Virginia Invitational in which Mike Sklasz was medalist. Vir- ginia, outshot by Eveleth by only a few strokes, finished sec- ond overall in the East Range Conference and again Sklasz received medalist honors. Dave Paukner finished fourth, John Ewens eighth, and Bruce Olson nineth. At the regional meet, Virginia finished a disappointing third. However, Sklasz and Lisa Peterson placed second and third respectively earning themselves a trip to the state meet where competition proved very tough. In tne boys' division, Sklasz finisned eleventh though he felt girls' division Peterson tied with Terri Carneal of Minneapolis for runner-up honors. The team, led by coaches Terry Cullen, Doc Stanaway, and captains Dan Milbridge, Steve Kivela, and Scott Farden, was ranked as high as ninth in the state AP poll. They finished the season with a 12-8-1 record. Of the team's eight losses, six were by one goal. The team provided a great deal of excitement for its many fans, which were very supportive all year. Finishing third in the I.R.C., the Devils drew Grand Rapids as their quarterfinal foe, losing in a heartbreaking 2-1 thriller before a packed house at the Miners. The Devils, with seven very talented seniors leaving, will look forward to a young team in 1983-84. Way To Victory 1 a 7 1) Who's that cute girl in the crowd? The team was under the direction of their new head coach Bennet Bloomquist. The team worked hard to improve their skills, teamwork, and shooting ability. The season had its ups and downs but the girls entered the sub- region tournament with confidence. Many of the young players will return next year for the 1983- 84 season. 30 6 1. The Devils lost quite a few close games that could have been wins for them. The captains of the team were Seniors: Tim Koski and John Sullivan, and Junior Paul Hendrickson. Koski was one of the leading IRC scorers, while Hendrickson led the team in rebounding. The Devils were bogged down with poor shooting most of the year, but hope to be back next year with a much improved record. Shots 32 1. Can I make it ..wonders star Tim Koski. 2. The team, led by veteran coach Jim Prittinen and Captain Tom Maroste, had some big shoes to fill, losing five seniors to graduation in '81. Being a group of high-spirited boys, the team worked hard and had a lot of fun, but the season came to an early end as the Devil netters suffered a 5-0 loss to Grand Rapids in the opening round of Region 7AA competition. In highlights of the Region Individual Tourney, the doubles team of Scott Farden and Russ Becker advanced to the semi-finals before losing to the eventual Region Champions in a tough, three-set match. They had four fine officers: President Mike Perala; Vice President, Bob Eilertson; Treasurer, Margaret Weir; Secretary, Jenny Stoltz. These hard-working students were directed by Mr. Frandsen. The Choir, consisting of Juniors and Seniors, was involved in many activities. The musical in the fall, three concerts, and the spring tour were all great successes. They had a chance to perform at Bemidji State University, the Shriner's Hospital, various high schools, and a Sunday morning service at a St. Paul church. The group had fund raisers to pay for their many expenses. The purchase of matching shoes for the girls contributed greatly to the appearance of the choir. 1) What, you want me to sing now? Matt exclaims. 2) Front Row(l-r): L. LaPole, G. Hansen, J. Carson, M. Weir, C. Prue, J. Stoltz, M. Lundberg, L. Gerchman, L. Shadle, L. Peterson, V. Heglund, G. Dostal, K. Senecal, S. Boril, K. Officers were President, Joe Esokala Vice President, Jenny McBride Secretary, John Milidan Treasurer, Maria Mortaloni. Fruit was sold again this year and members also held another bingo, along with other fundraisers. The Mixed Choir worked hard and put in many hours in order to cut an album in the spring. The choir also performed many concerts, including the winter, spring, pops, and the “Seven Last Words , an oratoria of religious songs, all of which contributed to the successful year the choir enjoyed. 89 Fiddler On The Roof A fiddler on the roof, sounds crazy, no? This was the opening line to this year's school musical. The major task was taken on by three student directors, Mr. Frandsen, Mr. Groves, Mr. Vukmanich, and about 125 cast and crew members. The performance moved the hearts of many as the students lived their parts to the fullest. The setting was a small Jewish village of Anatevka in Russia during the year 1905. The lead roles of Tevye and Golde were played by Bill Lemieux and Kris Senecal. Their performances along with the cast will be remembered by all who saw or participated in the performances. 1. During the four-month absence of director Jeanne Doty, the orchestra had the opportunity to play under two different conductors. James Colosalmo directed the Winter Concert; Chris Moroni took over in January and directed the annual Valentine's Concert. Mrs. Doty returned in March to direct the Spring Concert. The group's relative uniformity of ability made it possible for them to play challenging music and to develop their talents. Officers for the Sr. High Orchestra were Bill Lemieux, President; Diane Westby, Vice President; Sheryl Pelto, Treasurer; and Kris Carlsgaard, Secretary. 1) John Rinne, Kris Pelto, and Troy Amundson are playing a little tune. 2) Hey, Bill! Quit messing around! 3) They have intense concentration on their music. 4) Row l(l-r) K. Carlsgaard. D. Westby, S. Pelto. B. Lemieux, G. Johnson Row 2(l-r) L. Ibrahim. S. Caarlgard, K. Pelto, A. Several band members were selected to perform with the U.M.D. Honor Band. The band once again participated in the MSHSL State-Region Music Festival Contest. Again this year the Pep Band played at all home hockey, basketball, and football games. Throughout the year, the band could not have done all this without the help and guidance of director, Mr. John Vukmanich. We salute you Mr. V. This year's student officers are: Jim Mehle, President; Meg Stauber, Vice President; and Jean Eilertson, Secretary. 92 1. This summer they marched with the Virginia Marching Blues and contributed in the winning, for the first time in flag history, the Best Front Unit Award in the Hopkins Raspberry Parade. They also participated in the Homecoming parade and the half-time show, and are seen performing at various athletic events during the year. The corps consisted of 2 seniors, 1 junior, 3 sophomores, and 6 freshmen with one alternate. Captains for the 82-83 season were Sally Gunderson, Chris Williams, and Sandra Gregorich. 4 1. Under the leadership of Captains Leah Shadle and Kelly Stanaway, the corps won many parades and honors over the summer. Even though they have existed for only two years, they won one of the most prominent awards: the Best Corps award. The trophy was received at the Raspberry Festival in Hopkins, Minn. From the cold, snowy, football field, to the slippery ice of the hockey arena, to the basketball court, the corps has performed to the best of their ability. From their many trials, the Rifle Corps has learned that as a group, and with a lot of practice, they can achieve almost any award they want. The year can be best summed up by the corps' only senior Leah Shadle, It was a great and exciting year. 1. Gail and Toni show much enthusiasm at practice. 2. 1982-83 Corps-Back row: Michelle Niemi, Lara Ibrahim, Captain Leah Shadle. The group performed at various football, basketball, and hockey games throughout the year, and marched with the band during the summer. The majorettes twirled a variety of different kinds of batons, including hoops, flags, and fire. Other members include Jenny McBride, Jeanna Lautigar, and Barb Berlin. 1. Every Wednesday since the first week in June, the cheerleaders have practiced to learn new cheers and to clean up the old ones. At the beginning of the year there were many inexperienced cheerleaders, but with the help of captains Candy Tietz, Tami Metsa, Shelly Dishneau, and Alana Mason, everyone made it through the rough times with ease. This year they also held a car wash and sold homecoming buttons as fund raisers. Members receive points for declamation, oration, and debate; they compete in regional and National competition. In the fall and spring of each year they hold mock congresses in which the students write and debate bills. This year's NFL meet was held at Grand Rapids and the Student Congress at Denfeld and Walker. The National Honor Society is an honorary organization comprised of students with a grade point average over 3.4 and who are involved in school and community activities. The adviser of the group is Mr. Moeller. Due to lack of school funds to have professional tutors, the NHS set up a tutoring program of their own. The students offer their services to any other student who may need help in particular subject. 1. (L-R): M. Somero, S. Anderson, S. Boril, P. Grams, K. McKenna, N. Thompson. Row 2 (L-R): T.
