Student Life 8 Student Life 9 Soolaim’on a jungle safari Prom goers in 1971 experienced a unique jungle safari through Africa—A perfectly poised flamingo flaming with color stood in a sparkling blue pool proudly greeting the couples. Tropical trees and flowers lent such a realistic atmosphere one tried to smell them. Soolaim' on. the theme which inspired the Juniors in 1971, wafted through the transformed gym that special night—floating on a mystical, romantic jungle breeze. Cheeze we’re tuff Fall days came, and fall days went in 1971; but October 15 was Roosevelt's great 1971 HOMECOMING. Streamers decorated the main hall, changing it into a blue and white fantasy. Big banners blared out our unique homecoming slogan— STEPP-ON-WOLF. Our football team walked all over the Ely Timberwolves, 46-6. At half-time, our Homecoming Queen, Lesley Graham, and her royal court rode in procession, along with the class floats. The Seniors found it was well worth it, as they swept the contest with their giant mouse, and the slogan— CHEEZE WE RE TUFF. 1. It takes more than the players on the field to make a good team. 2. Charlie Zupetz. Washington Elementary School’s sweetheart, makes it big. 3. 1971 Homecoming Queen and her court: Diane Jorgensen. Queen Lesley Graham. Kay Carlson, and Shannon Parden. 4. The Senior Class thanks all who unknowingly contributed to the success of their winning float. Student Life 11 A hazy shade of winter Girls in Entre Nous and Tri Hi sponsored that one special dance which gave the weaker sex a chance to prove themselves. November 12 saw a carefully constructed park in a winter setting. As delicate snowflakes, bearing the couples’ names, floated through the air, and the couple on the wall mural dreamily skated. Gene and the Playboys played for the 1971 Turnabout as we danced in A Hazy Shade of Winter. Year of themittens In one supreme effort to reach the goal of $10,072, the Class of 72 launched an unforgettable magazine drive on October 5, 1971. Groups of students, divided alphabetically, constructed teepees and outhouses as collection sites for the subscriptions. From the magazine money, $2000 was donated to the ROHIAN. an amount was used to sponsor the AFS program, and the magazine money also paid for the Seniors' class memorial and class banquet. To thank the people of Virginia for supporting their magazine drive, the Seniors launched another drive. Each Senior dropped in a pair of mittens at the ‘ Mitten Tree.'' The hundreds of mittens were then distributed among the needy at Christmas. 14 Student Life 1. Senior magazine drive co-chairmen, Bernice Kishel and Bob Walden, along with advisor. Student Life 15 The human train Dirtywork at the Crossroads, a typical melodrama, came to life April, 1971, with the hilarious performances of talented VHS students. VHS set designers added to this melodrama with their “rolling river Who else could create a river with two boards, blue paint, and a saw? Even more amazing was the train composed of thirteen human bodies. This chugging choo-choo provided a dramatic finish to the unforgettable Dirtywork at the Crossroads. 1. Virginia hosts one-act play contest This year's one act play contest was set in a town mortuary. “The Burial of Esposito” dealt with the death of a young boy who was drafted, and returned home in a coffin. His father, Nick Esposito, refused to accept his beloved son’s death. The Burial of Esposito” presented a challenge for Director Tony Turk and assistant, Bernice Kishel. It did not place in district competition, but Mike Peterson, as Nick, received an honorable mention for his efforts. VHS choirs don’t “fiddle” around In the small Jewish community of Anatevka, Russia, life was based on tradition—without it, the people would have been as shaky as a FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. Based on this idea, the 1972 musical FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, led its audience along a path of laughter and tears. Chuck Christianson as Tevye stole the show with his rendition of If I Were A Rich Man. His hilarious gyrations and snapping fingers sent the audience home humming this snazzy tune. His real-life sister, Wendy, portrayed his wife—a nagging, bossy woman. With a multitude of other performers, and an orchestra as great as the New York Philharmonic, Mr. Frandsen and Mr. Groves produced a play which melted the hearts of the audience, and filled them with the excitement found in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. Carlsons’ reign The 1972 Winter Sports Week brought Tweetie Bird to the Sophomores’ hall. Devil Country to the Juniors' hall, and a short- lived snowman to the Seniors' hall. Besides a hall decorating contest, there was the annual snow sculpturing competition. The Juniors took first place with their monstrous frog and the slogan: CROAK-EM. The Sophomores took second place honors with their bear, and the slogan: EMBEARASS EM.” The Seniors tried hard with their squirrel and nut bearing the words GO NUTS.” On Friday. February 11, in an afternoon assembly, Kay Carlson was crowned Queen, and Jack Carlson crowned King of the Winter Sports Festival. That night saw the memorable Virginia-Eveleth hockey clash and the last second goal (or was it?) by Eveleth—as they STRUGGLED past Virginia, 4-3. ...... Competitive fun If you happened to wander past the boys’ gym some cold winter night, you might have seen the “Star Spangled Bananas”, or, if you were lucky—“Pistol Pete’s Punky Rejects”. Intramural Sports provided boys not participating in winter competitive sports to still have “fun and games” in the winter. Under the direction of Mrs. Koebensky, GRA provided girls with a chance to really let loose”. Organized into four teams—Art, Sparkie’s Goobers. Flying Hooverettes, and Tough Guys, the girls conducted weekly battles of street hockey. 1. INTRAMURALS M.Drobac. R.Spolar. P.Lambert. D. Thomas. L.Okland. J.PIutt. B.Smolensky. T.Bonner. B. Aluni. Working with Mr. Geary and the band, the VHS majorettes devised routines, and entertained the sports' enthusiasts at half- time intervals. Clapping and jumping, the cheerleaders, directed by Miss Moroni, drove the “Devil spirit up to an all-time high with their cheers. 1. MAJORETTES -ROW 1: A.Hahne. L.Erickson. R. Pettinelli. The members were allowed to sit in on classes and view teaching methods for future use. Twenty girls, guided by Mrs. Bonicatto. kept the FHA of VHS going strong. As fund- raisers. the girls sold hot potatoes at the football games, and 'VHS Penants. Throughout the year, coupons were collected for the East Range Day Activity Center, and a Christmas party was held for some mentally handicapped children from the center. Organizations 42 New publication The NHS, advised by Miss Beckstrom, was composed of those students, selected by the faculty, having the qualities of leadership, service, scholarship, and character. New members were initiated into the Lafayette Bliss Chapter at an annual spring assembly. The winds of 1971 carried to VHS, Cadeaux, a literary magazine. Every student was able to submit their short stories, poems, and essays. Under the direction of Miss Larsen and Mrs. Stolberg, Carolyn Peterson and her Cadeaux staff published the magazine. Organizations 43 New “Star” room The “Star of the North,” Roosevelt’s enlightening newspaper, was edited by Julie Prlina and Mike Lang. Mrs. Hill advised the shenanigans as the staff produced monthly issues in the new room. Provided free of charge, the newspaper was filled with school activities and “fun” articles, while artistic pictures spiced the pages. The “Star” was created to allow students who were interested in Journalism to get an actual view of newspaper production. 1. ATHLETICS Athletics 46 Putter makes state The summer sport of golf proved to be a winner for Mr. Urick. He lead his boys to victory after victory on the greens. Mark Peterson, senior captain, putted his way to the state tournaments. Although the club was small, it packed a powerful punch. The spring sport of tennis brought out a large turnout. They were defeated only once on their home ice. Many a hockey game was livened by the poppy cheers of the Hombres'' Who will forget their siren and flashing red light? Supervising the faculty, students, and all school activities filled his busy days. Alert and capable secretaries aided Mr. Beulke in his work. Daily bulletins were typed, along with absence lists, and those occasional notices which flew through the school at 2:00 reading: “School will be released at 2:30 due to hazardous driving conditions. Directing the school district was the school board, who was in charge of debating over and smoothing out the school budget and teachers’ salaries. Mr. Beulke Principal Mr. Rukavina Asst. Principal Mrs. Schuman Secretary Mrs. Winkler Secretary Administration 114 College testing stumps seniors In 1972, more than ever, high school was regarded as a link to higher education, not the final step. This education took various forms, as students entered vocational schools, junior colleges and universities. The important business of filling out financial aid blanks, admission forms, and conducting tests was all supervised by the counselors, Mr. Anderson and Mr. Como. 1. Lani Sakrison realizes that being a senior means responsibility. 2. SCHOOL BOARD: Vernon Saxhaug, Edward Pakola, Bert Slade, Elder Metsa. Lloyd Sakrison, Edward Kerola, William Bergman. 3. While awaiting help from our counselors, Jim Jarvi examines the bulletin board. Administration 115 1972 lets loose Anyone sneaking a peek into the art room was really left with an eyeful. Of what? Everything imaginable and unimaginable! Twisted globes of clay, splatters of paint on canvas, and bright posters cluttered the room, as ingenious art students put on their thinking caps, and really let loose. Administration 116 Orchestra comes forth All groups should have a goal, stated Mr. Frandsen. director of the A Cappella Choir. Achieving this goal—appreciation of music—were the A Cappella Choir and the Mixed Choir directed by Mr. Groves. The A Cappella Choir not only sang, but also sold the inevitable soap which financed their annual trip to Minneapolis. The VMS Band pepped up all fans at pep assemblies, and joined in the uproar at basketball, football, and hockey games. Orchestra members displayed their skill by performing in November at the three one act plays. Said Mr. Frandsen: All music is good, some is just better than others. The above musical groups made good music better as shown by their concert performance. 1. Art students learn that cleaning up is as important as their project. 2. Gwen Carlson devotes her spare time to perfecting her art project. 3. Paul Richards displays the choir's salesmanship. 4. Mr. Groves shows the choir the right way. Mr. Davis Orchestra Mr. Frandsen Choir Mr. Geary Band Administration 117 Computer “tilts” on schedules A broad area of study was offered to the serious math student in Roosevelt High. Geometry books were brought home every night as we were introduced to the intriguing world of lines, planes, triangles, and theorems. Higher Algebra increased our knowledge of working with unknowns. We often faced a problem like—FACTOR: 2 10 + a20 + 1909114 +T1 2 3 + (TMR)7 Advanced Senior Math perhaps was the “crowning glory of our math study. We never were quite sure what we were doing, but test time surprised us—we knew more than we thought we did! Computer math, a recent addition to the curriculum, provided a challenge to the student who was aware of the important role of computers in our society. Besides class use, the computer also planned our class schedules, and helped in all the figuring accompanying the Magazine Drive. 1. Mark Drobac looks on as the result of his program are typed out. 2. Dan Peterson points out to Rocky Serra that exactness is important on the triple beam balance. Mr. D. Johnson Higher Algebra Geometry Mr. Knoll Advanced Math Computer Math Higher Algebra Administration 118 Water clock proves faulty Biology was the first exciting glimpse into science at the senior high. We peeked at unrecognizable bottled specimens, studied plant and animal life, and stared at the pulsing heart of the frog we had just brutally and clumsily dissected. “The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.” Abraham Lincoln must have had in mind the chemistry students at Roosevelt when he composed these famous words of the Gettysburg Address. Who will forget how many times bunsen burners burnt fingers, bubbling acid shot from over-heated test tubes, and litmus paper turned a disgusting yellow when it should have turned blue? Physics, although classified as a science, was really fun in disguise. Through experiments and math problems, the student learned the physical properties of phenomena around him. This learning experience necessitated memorizing countless equations, and conducting bizarre experiments. Weights were tossed out windows, while other weights whirled around the classroom. Water clocks occasionally broke—leaving water on the floor, which any intelligent physicist could and did clean up. Administration 119 18 year olds vote As sophomores, we began with World History. In our junior year we winded our way through U.S. History. And as seniors, we reached the top with Problems of Democracy. World History was a general study of man, from the very beginning to the present. We were introduced to Neanderthal Man, said ''Hello to Confuscious, waved at the Greeks, and traveled through the grandeur of Rome. Concentrating just on our fifty states. U.S. History covered every political and social movement in our country, from its birth to 1972. Problems of Democracy included a study of sociology, government, and economics, with weekly time-outs for current events. In an effort to provide better facilities to business students, the entire section moved to the new annex at the start of the second semester. 1. Wayne Wilberg listens in as Mrs. Koebensky tells Tom Rubenstein how to work a problem. 2. Pat Lambert and Mrs. Brandt go over his test mistakes. 3. Cindy Causin is a good example of the correct way to sit when typing. 4. Keeping the eyes on the book is an important part in preventing typing errors. Administration 121 Creative Writing gave students a chance to express themselves in the form of essays, short stories and poetry. Weird music floated through the classroom as inventive writers got “charged up. Current Literature was an in-depth study of modern novels. Besides daily class discussions, we wrote dreaded papers, done the night before they were due, which unbelievably increased our understanding of the twentieth century novel. Brand new for 72 were the courses studying Drama and Short Story, created for the student seeking specialization in the field of English. Cinderella exploited Mr. Christiansen Spanish Miss Korpy German Miss Larsen Spanish Mrs. Proznik French A dash of foreign flair was added to VHS by the Language Department. French, German, and Spanish classes gave the student a chance to acquire a new language. Grammar and literature were the two basic fields of study. Verbs were conjagated, innumerable tenses learned, and short stories deciphered. Movies, records, tapes, and plays—both original and nonoriginal (French certainly made Cinderella hard to understand) supplemented the text books and guidance of our teachers. Mrs. Bonicatto Family Living Consumer Clothing Mrs. Sipola Clothing Sewing machines hummed, needles broke, and thread flew as the girls in sewing became first-class seamstresses. Walking past the kitchen in the junior high, a lucky person could catch heavenly aromas filtering from the ovens—delicacies to satisfy the pickiest eater were created by these master chefs. In Family Living, a recent addition to the Home Economics Dept., girls examined the family structure. These girls pursued their studies earnestly—for they would be the future homemakers. Administration 125 Special education Students in Special Education classes attended courses in Industrial Arts, Home Economics, First Aid, Physical Education and Typing. Subsidized by state and federal funds. Special Education built basic skills, in an attempt to return the student to regular classes as soon as possible. Mrs. Ahlin Special Ed. Mr. Spencer Special Ed. Richie Olson named athletic director Being physically fit at VHS involved more than being able to escape the unearthly fumes of the change rooms in the gym. Along with exercises we were taught the skills and techniques of volleyball, basketball, soccer, and tumbling. SOMEHOW, we kicked our way through soccer, sweated through basketball, tumbled our way through tumbling, and even had fun doing it. Co-rec gym and swim classes offered both boys and girls a chance to get exercise in a relaxed atmosphere. Bowling, volleyball, and skating were all enjoyed by those in Co-rec gym. A new athletic director, Mr. Olson, took over his duties in 1971. 1. Concentration is necessary at all times in Special Education. 2. Tapping the ball lightly in volleyball makes it easier to pass to a teammate. 3. David Eilola listens intently to his instructor. 4. Mr. Olson thinks about the challenges of his new job as athletic director.
