The Basic Tool: English According to George Orwell in his book 1981, a person can only think of such ideas as his native lan- guage or knowledge of language can express. Me uses this idea in describing his negative utopia where the government uses a language designed to keep the people from independent thinking. George Bernard Shaw had a similar view in mind when he wrote the play Pygmalion”, w'hich became the basis of the musical “My Fair Lady.” He wanted to prove that a person is classified by the language he uses. The vast majority of students at VHS do not have as serious an accent as Shaw’s “murderer of the Eng- lish longue , Eliza Doolittle, or the ominous govern- mental threat of Orwell’s character. Winston Smith, hut the illustration will suffice to prove a point: with- out a formal, regimented study of one’s native lan- guage to increase one’s ability to communicate profi- ciently, a student would be ill-fit to live or prosper satisfactorily.
