JOURNALISM If you want to work hard and learn a lot, then Journalism, Room 210, is the place for you. Journalism is the course in which you learn a great deal of and about the newspaper profession, from proofreading copy to writing columns. The art of writing that is practiced and learned in Journalism will be an aid all through life no matter what the pro- fession is. Room 210 is always a beehive of activity. Mr. Ferguson is busily typing out a test and students are feverishly work- ing to beat the deadline. Journalism is interesting and a lot of fun, there are always special treats in store, such as, one day Mr. Ferguson will talk, walking in with a gleam in his eye and announce, Sure as I'm standing here there will be a quiz tomorrow! There are also his constant reminders of You're going to write till you arm falls off! Journalism is one of the most interesting and valuable courses in Roosevelt High. 41 Left to right Row I: Judy Bussey, Joan Rowbottom, Pat Shodan, Sharon Grefenberg, Carolyn Rodarago, Kathy Vondarhaar, Mary Jo Jania, Gratchan minan, Carol Pfremmer, Sheryl Paterson, Lynn Heikkila, Kay Jacobson, Marline Johnson Row 2: Shirley Scott, Janet Koski, Joyce Manninan, Marcy Kishal, Susan Marks, Linda Willberg, Jean Wouri, Julia Scherkenbach, Judy Milavetz. Tears came to many eyes while reminiscing over the three years of membership in Tri Hi. Through the efforts of the members and the wonderful guidance of Miss Beckstrom. Entre Nous had a very reward- ing and successful year, including a Christmas party honor- ing six welfare children. Its float for homecominq. with the theme Devil's Raid Kills 'Em Dead.'' led the club to winning first place. This victory was accented by the crowning of an Entre Nous member. Rae Jenia, as the 1962 Football Homecoming Queen. The purpose of Entre Nous is to introduce its members to careers after high school. This has been promoted by the various speakers the club has had during the year. A glorious farewell banquet was held for the graduating seniors. Secretary-Jeanne (Joan) Laituri, and le tris'or, Guillaume (Bill) Cauchy, had a busy year. The club held a bake sale December I.. With money raised during this year, plans were made to aid U. N. E. S. C. O. and the Red Cross in foreign lands, particularly Espana and France. In the future they hope to communicate with langu- age clubs in these two countries. They had a Christmas party December 17. They distributed small gifts among the mem- bers. broke the traditional pinata of Spain, sang French and Spanish Christmas songs, ate French and Spanish food, played traditional Christmas games and had a rollicking time! Spaench surely has been busy this year! The highlight of the school year for the FHA members was the annual District 2 FHA Convention, which was held this year in Virginia on October 20. Christmas caroling at the Infirmary provided sheer enjoyment for the many pa- tients. The Mother-Dauahter Tea in February was financed through the club’s funds. It was looked back upon as very rewarding for the girls and their mothers. Other club projects were the selling of cook books and ribbon. Installation for new officers marked the end of another year and presented the club with new girls, who pledged to continue the task for the recognition and expansion of the Virginia FHA. After the business meeting a pot luck supper was held. Under the direction of Miss Kangas. Miss Peterson, and Miss Bitker. the club experienced a wave of prosperity throughout the school year. Where do you get buttons for the Homecoming? Who do we play tomor- row night? Either a Pep Council member or one of their pens haves the answer! This year the Pep Council has sold pins for homecoming and pens with the hockey and basketball schedule printed on them. It has arranged assemblies and taken care of many other vital functions. Advisors Mr. Olson and Miss Elliott, and President Mary Jo Jenia and the other officers have led the club and the school in many activities, and provided a sportsmanlike leadership for us all. Football, Hockey. Basketball, Swimming, Golf. Track. Tennis, and Baseball are the major sports in which boys earn their letters. Any boy who has lettered at least once in any of these sports is eligible to join the Lettermen's Club. The purpose of the Lettermen's Club is to promote sports- manship not only among the team members themselves, but also among the student body. It's main money-making projects were a car wash and refreshment concessions at Basketball and Football games. They sponsored a Lettermen's Ball and had the duty of electing a Winter Festival Queen. Girl's Glee Club, and the Madrigal Group completed a very successful year under Walter Meissner Jr., director. Although new this year the Madrigal Group gave many wonderful performances along with the other two Choirs. The year's performances included a Christmas concert, a spring concert, and a pop concert up at the park. The choirs also took part in a clinic held in Eveleth last March. Just before Christmas the choirs joined forces and took part in a caroling party. To make sure each of the engagements was a complete success the choirs worked very hard during the course of the school year. With Mr. Meissner to guide them the choirs were a credit to our town and to our school. Sersha, Don Skarp, Kan Saar!, Mika Wainionpaa, Calvin Molray, Bob Koebensky. Pat Fortun, Wilber Geary, (director) Band Orchestra The Virginia High School Band came shining through an- other year of fun and excitement in spite of the fact that it snowed at some of the football games and it rained on several parade engagements. The band marched in the State American Legion Convention Parade in Duluth where it won second place. Band members held a candy sale, and the proceeds of over $ 1,000.00 will be used to finance an overnight trip to Minneapolis this summer. Besides playing for all home basketball, football, and hockey games, the band performed on the basketball court under the student direction of Robert Birnstihl at the first district bastkeball tournament at Eveleth. The High School Band, under the direction of Wilbur Geary, won a triple A rating at the District Mu lc Festival held in Gilbert. One. two. three, four, ONE! And the strains of The Gypsy Overture or On the Trail rise from the bandhall. It's the high school orchestra with its twenty talented mem- bers. working on its new numbers for the program or contest coming up. The orchestra, under the direction of Keith Davis, has had a very busy and successful year. It has provided music for school programs, as well as participating in the annual Spring Concert and entering the district music contest. Besides the ordinary orchestra activities, the string instru- mentalists have played for choir programs and city and civic doings. The various members of the orchestra have com- peted in the Solo and Ensemble Program. The orchestra, always to be counted on for a spirited and excellent performance. FNA At the beginning of the school year, many new mem- bers were initiated into the club at a supper meeting. Throughout the year, speakers, from a number of fields in nursing, held the close attention of the girls at regular meetings. FNA members visited the Range Rehabilitation Center to view the fine physical methods. Many members also vis- ited a Virginia clinic to learn more about the equipment used and how the clinic performs its duties. Another trip slated was to be toured around the State Institution at Moose Lake, which proved to be very rewarding yet somewhat despon- dent. TalJcs and personal experiences helped the girls become acquainted more completely with the nursing field, including its disadvantages and advantages. Under the guidance of Mrs. Mattsfield and Mrs. Wrolsted. the club members par- ticipated in a year program, which proved to be very re- warding. Ro Hi Theps The production of “The Miser shows clearly just what Ro Hi Theps may accomplish under the expert guidance of Miss Healy. This year proved to be very entertaining for the club, because Gordon Jennings, president, really kept the par- ticipants “on their toes . Ro Hi Theps is a club organized to introduce students to the field of dramatics. Throughout the year, speech meets, participation in assemblies, plays and working on the Radio Broadcasts gave everyone a chance to discover this wonderful and exciting art. Members that earned 75 points by participating in the above, received a Thespian letter at the Honor Assembly. To end its active year, the annual banquet was held and the new officers were announced. Talented members of our student body played instruments or sang. Money earned during the year is used to build and fill a chest to be shipped overseas. These chests contain health and educational supplies and toys. Other accomplishmennts during the year were visits to the Pioneer's Infirmary, a bake sale, and participation in the International Art Exhibit. F. T. A. was organized as an opportunity for students interested in teaching to investigate the profession. Many interesting and enlightening talks were given to the group throughout the year by various V. H. S. teachers. A trip was made to St. Cloud State Teachers College where the annual F. T, A. convention was held. Practice teaching in Virginia’s elementary schools was one of the ways the senior club members became acquainted with the profession. This year exciting, close games were played: mainly in volleyball. The sophomores proved to be good players and close competition went on, especially when they play- ed with the senior girls. If one watched a G. A. A. basketball game in action he would see determined girls pouncing all over the floor. In order to receive a letter, 1.000 points must be earn- ed and to receive a pin, 1,500 points are necessary. The President for this club this year was Lois Rowbot- tom. The advisers were Miss Moroni and Miss Elliot. Radio Broadcast Do you listen to the radio often? Have you often wished that you could be a radio announcer? Well if you have, then you should be a member of Radio Broadcasting. Every Friday afternoon throughout the school year, a complete account of Roosevelt High can be heard over WHLB between 4:15 and 4:30. The program is given by two members of the Radio Broadcasting staff, which is headed by Nancy Norri. The members do a great deal of work to make these programs a success. Each member must get his information for his articles, write them up, and then read them over the air. Radio Broadcasting is an activity which can teach you a lot of things. Learning how to handle a great deal of responsibility, developing a better speaking voice, and gaining poise are just a few of the things that can be learned. Belonging to this club may also show you what career you want to go into or in what field you are best suited. VHS can well be proud of Radio Broadcasting and its worthwhile activi- ties. s T C U 0 D U E N N C T 1 L First row lift to right: Judy Hunnsinger. Lois Rowbottom. Nancy Norri. Karen Larsen. Library National Honor Society The Roosevelt High School library, under the supervision of Miss Gunvar Wadd. contains over I 1,000 books of wide and varied interests. Included in this variety of material is the reference collection and the 80 magazines to which the library subscribes. The library is open before school, each hour during the day. and for an hour after school. With the help of paid clerical workers and students volunteers. Miss Wadd keeps the library up-to-date, adding new books to its shelves, and discarding the worn out and obsolete ones throughout the school year. A library is the greatest source of knowledge a student can have while attending school, and the Roosevelt High School library is a good one in which to acquire some of that knowledge. The National Honor Society, which was founded in 1921, gives recognition to exceptional students. The students must be in the top quarter of their junior and senior classes scholastically and must be active in extra-curricular activities. Each teacher rates a student on four qualities: scholar- ship. leadership, character and service. Final selection is made by a faculty committee. The members of this club aid students who are having trouble with school work. In a spring assembly, the society initiates new members at a candlelight ceremony which is followed by a reception. THE LIVELY ONES Providing us with entertainment at our football, basketball, hockey games, and parades this past year were the Virginia Hiqh School Majorettes. Their many hours of strenuous practicing were well worth their while. Head majorette for her second year was Sheila Hansen. This was her fourth year as a majorette. For Elizabeth Remus, it was her third year. It was their second year for Judy Bussey, Carrie Lou Malnar, and Cheryl DeYoannes. Being twirlers for their first year were Patricia Fortun and Gloria Mihevc. From their performances, it can truthfully be said that this was one of their finest years. On a cold, snowy football field or in a warm basketball gym, our cheerleaders will be there leading the Virginia fans, be they one or one thousand, in their many cheers. These Yell Queens were elected by the student body in the fall of the year. The Senior Co-Captains who sparked the other four cheerleaders into peppy yelling were Mary Jo Jenia and Gail Gunderson. This loyal job of cheering plus their many fine pep assem- blies ignited our teams into their many victories. Majorettes: Gloria Mihevc. Lix Remus. Cheryl DeYoannes. Homecoming was a major success in the 1962-1963 football season as Virginia trounced the Aurora-Hoyt Lake's Black-Hawks before a cheering Virginia crowd. Virginia's homecoming sloqan MAKE THE HAWKS TURN CHICKEN seemed to in- spire the fans as well as the players. Coach Beste did his usual good job with Vir- ginia's gridiron players. Coach Noel Olson and Assistant Coach Halunen BASKETBALL The Virginia Blue Devils fulfilled preseason forecasts as a district power by compil- ing a season record of 13 wins and 7 losses. Tournament aspirations were cooled by an upset defeat at the hands of the Ely Timberwolves in the district quarterfinals. Coach Noel Olson molded his title contenders around the talents of center Al Williams and guard John Nelson. The starting five was wounded out by guard Dave Lindberg, forward Jim Wovcha, and forward Larry Barrett. The Devils opened the 62-63 season with an impressive 54 to 36 victory over the Cook Gophers but found themselves on the losing end in a hard fought contest with Aurora-Hoyt Lakes. Beginning with a victory over Eveleth the Devils rolled to six consecutive wins before being defeated by the Hibbing Blue Jackets. However, the Devils bounced back with a 5 game win streak. The season ended with the Devils dropping their last home game. Assistant coach Halunan speaks at pre-tourna ment pep assembly. “Is that the Bird you're doing. Barrett? “Ouch, an eyelash in my eye! Barrett, you clean the locker rooms. Patka, the gym floor, and the rest of you guys mop the entire area. Look who is trying for Glee Club. Athletic Director, Art Stock; Student managers: Charles Lutkevich and James Koski, Coach John Beste HOCKEY The VHS pucksters, under coach John Beste, made 1962 one of the best seasons Virqinia has had in hockey for many years. After a respectable 4-2 loss to powerful Eveleth, the team jumped right back into title contention with many splendid perfor- mances. Joe Urick, captain of the 1962-63 team, played his role well as he sparked the team to victory in many close contests. Returning lettermen from last year include: Joe Urick, Tom Kintner, Dave Miller, Dick Ratai, Rick Stickney, Dennis Chilcote, Bill Beste, Eric Norri, Mike Sertich, Garr Thomas, and Reggi Carlson. The Devils, with an ever vacillating, potent front line, were able to score consistently throughout the season. Many an opponent found him- self thwarted in a possible scoring play by our able defencemen. All in all it was a very fruitful season brought forth by a very hustling team. Good work boys, VHS is proud of you! Co-captains Jarry Graanfiald and Bob Johnson with Coach Allison SWIMMING Splash . . . Gurgle . . . C'mon team. We won! We won! This was a familiar cry that we shouted during our swimming exhibitions. This was a very rewarding season, since we faced tremendous competition on the Range. All of the tankers did their best to make this year's record a good one, and it would be unfair to name any one outstanding swimmer. However, all of the swimmers are an outstanding example of Coach Allison's emphasis on good all around swimming. Hey. Dad. that' my shirt your wearing! cc C c Chalk up another successful season for the VHS sod- buster” squad! The golfers were hit hard by gradua- tion, but Joe Urick, Jack Cohn, and Don Schibel returned to anchor the 1962 team. Coach John Urick, rebuilding around these veterans, came up with a hard swinging, winning team. In their '62 debut, the Devils trounced Eveleth badly. The season that followed, abundant in victories, scarce in defeats, was largely the result of hard work by both coach Urick and his players. During the season, the Devils travelled to Bemidji and Duluth, making respectable showings in both places. The season was climaxed by the capturing of the District 27 title. Competition was keen, but the Devils placed three men in the top five, including first place and a tie for second. Lettering this year in golf were: Joe Urick, Jack Cohn, Don Schibel, Buddy Johnson, Dave Youngman, Dave Miller, Doug Chase and Jack Urick. Devils, you have hacked well! Coach John Urick, Joe Urick. James Deutch. Stanton John son and Jack Urick TRACK Captain Bruce Branigan represents the track team's eagerness. 61 The VHS tracksters have completed a very successful season this year. Paced by captain Bruce Branigan, the trackmen pounded around the track with success in al- most every race. Track officially started April 2 with light workouts in the Technical Gym. Returning letter- men for the Devils were: Mike Laukka, Eric Norri, Dave Chiarello, Fred Novak, Jim Sersha, Bruce Branigan and Dave Lindberg. We were well represented in the weight events all season long, this being a deciding factor in many of the meets. Four seniors ended their careers as Blue Devils this year. However, it is hoped that some of the fast-improving underclassmen will make next year's team as potent as this year's by filling some of the vacant spots. Coach Rodney Halunen and assistant coach Tom Mahelich. TENNIS Please don't sit on my racket! Our fighting boys in bermudas are braving all kinds of weather to bring victory to our school. Each one should be congratulated for the work he has done throughout the year. The boys have completed another success- ful season under the careful direction of Mr. Turner. Good exercise and plenty of rest seem- ed to be what the doctor order for the boys . Co-captains Tom Truai and Gary Lillasva BASEBALL Watch it! I've got it. Drat that sun any- way!” This is a good excuse for many of the players on Coach Rog Scheldroup's team. Scheldroup's “nine will have to qo a long way to gain the championship of District 27 again this year. But with hard practice and a few regulars back this year, they should do pretty well.
