Under the direction of Miss Moroni and Miss Elliott, the girls devoted many hours of practice after school to learning the various steps. During the winter these high - steppers appeared in outfits of black velveteen high- lighted with silver sequins, and blue cordu- roy outfits trimmed with white fur. For summer wear they chose blue and white sailor uniforms with box pleated skirts and sleeveless sailor tops. Each outfit was com- pleted with matching tassels and spotless white boots. Every day during fourth hour band hall, these girls are busy practicing or making changes in their rhythmical routines. Their long hours of practicing and planning have given V.H.S. something to be quite proud of. (MjrrrUaftrrs Cheerleaders are the objects of praise, criticism, and admiration from all sides. The eyes of the school and of the community are constantly upon them. They must try to be model teenagers. This year's squad, which is constantly working to deserve the honor of repre- senting V.H.S.. consists of head cheerleader Char Orazem. Gail Gunderson. Mary Jo Jenia. Mary Jo Scherkenbach. Nancy Rich- ards. and Nancy Vanderbloom. On a rainsoaked football field, a crowded basketball court, or a frigid hockey rink, they are always there — six cheering, blue and white-clad girls. Proudly they back the team, good or bad, win or lose, and in that sense V.H.S. is never a loser. Football, basketball, hockey, swimming, track, tennis, baseball and golf are the major sports at RHS. If you are a boy and have lettered in any of these why not consider joining the Lettermen s Club? By joining this you will have a chance to make new friends, and also to help promote sportsmanship in our school. . This year under president Gary Lillesve. the boys selected a new style jacket that is royal blue with white trim. Also, as in the past years, the boys entered a float in the homecoming parade, heloed olan the Lettermen's Ball, and elected a queen to reign over the Winter Festival. The boys also had some money-making projects such as a car wash, concessions at the football games, and a concession and coat check at the basketball games. Smti 1961 brought to a close another successful year for the VHS band. Although they took many trips throughout the ranqe. the one considered the most exciting was the trip to St. Paul where they performed in the State American Legion Convention Parade and took the third place honors. The annual band show, Music 1961, sponsored by all band members and under the supervision of Jerry Willen- bring. student leader of the stage band, also proved to be a great success. Robert Beverly, clarinet virtuoso, from Du- luth, Minnesota, was guest performer. Under the direction of Mr. Geary, the band once again supported the Blue Devils at football, basketball, and hockey games, with their usual rhythmical songs and marches. Much hard work and practice is put into their various sonqs during the fourth hour band hall so they can present VHS with a band they can be proud of. ©rrljratra Don’t be alarmed at the weird noises which emit from Malone Hall. They could well be used as sound effects for a haunted house. It is the Virginia High School orchestra practicing again. All kidding aside, these students practice often and very hard and produce some fine performances under the direction of Mr. Keith Davis. There are twenty- five members playing about ten different instruments. A part of the orchestra are members of the String En- semble which plays for special civic dinners, teas and other affairs. The students and general public enjoy the excellent music of these talented members between the acts of school plays and at the Commencement Exercises. The district Music Festival finds the V.H.S. orchestra holding forth with the best of them. The annual Spring Concert is the climax of their yearly musical performances. The orchestra and Mr. Davis are to be congratulated for their exceptionally fine work this year. Jlrji (Cornuti Pep! Athletes! Cheerleaders! Sportsmanship! These malce up the Pep Council of VHS. The Center is comparatively new. but already has a reputation for the fine physical therapy work being done for patients from all over the Iron Range. Another trip which was out of town to the State Institution at Moose Lake was limited to senior students only. There they visited the State Hospital for the mentally ill. The trip was very interesting, even though some- what depressing. The annual Christmas party for two welfare children was financed by contributions from each member. They arranged transportation to and from the party for both children. The children received gifts, but were too excited to eat much of the lovely food at the party. Run. Jip, Run may have been one of the sentences read by any one of the first graders which were used in the second year Future Teachers project at VHS. Senior student teaching was started last year with much success and was tried again this year. Under the direction of Mr. Tiplady the Roosevelt FTA wasn't very busy this year as in previous years but it's hoped tkat it will grow next year. One new thing was started this year and that was evening supper meetings. At these meetings the girls would hear talks on the teaching profession and see slides and movies on col- leges and activities. Six boxes of rummaqe were donated to the Salvation Army. Red Cross presi- dent, was the master of ceremonies for this year's assembly. A group of girls put on a skit and a few talented members of our student body played instruments or sang. During tne year, a bake sale was held to raise money for next year's treasury. This money was also used to make a chest filled with useful supplies to be sent overseas. Their first bake sale was a great success so they put on a few more sales which profited them around $30 each. After Christmas they visited the Infirmary and presented the patients with gifts. This year was very profitable and interesting for the Red Cross Organization. Ro-Hi-Theps, with the guidance of Miss Healy, combined dramatic activities and fun in an active year from start to finish. Thespian members appeared in the cast or worked on the crew for Stage Door, the all-school production. Twenty-nine students presented pantomimes or speeches at the initiation in November. Why I prefer a woman president'' a.nd an imitation of the famous spy, Mata Hari, were just a few of them. At the Honor Assembly, speech letters were awarded to deserving Thespians who earned 75 points by participation in speech meets, radio broadcasts, plays, assemblies, and other dramatic events. The drill team completed another successful year marching for football games. Special congratulations go to Sandra Skustad and her team members because they have been a champion of all sports since ninth grade. Swallow Everything But De-Feet was the slogan for the Entre Nous' 1961 Homecoming float. The large white whale, with his mouth open, and boots protruding, caused many a chuckle. As in previous years the club decorated the halls of VHS. This year the front hall was made into a big football field. Under the direction of Miss Beckstrom the Entre Nous Girls' Club, with the purpose of informing girls of the opportunities for work in different fields, completed a very successful year. Many talks given by local people on different occupations made up the programs for many of their evening meetings. As in other years the girls put on their Christmas party for four small welfare children. The children were given many small gifts which made them starry-eyed and made tears come to the eyes of many of the girls. This party included gifts and a dinner. At the conclusion of the school year the seniors were hon- ored at the annual spring banquet where they received cor- sages in the club colors and were the center of attention all evening.
