Although Virginia’s 1959 opening football game with Duluth Denfeld ended with defeat 30-6, the Devils,” under the expert coach- ing of John Beste and staff, proved that this couldn't discourage them as they gave the most impressive showing of outstanding ability in VHS football since 1942. The most damaging record against Virginia’s IRC football reputation was broken as the Blue Devils defeated International Falls 19-7 for the first time since 1950. The third loss of the season was suffered when VHS was defeated by Hibbing. This loss cost the team its chance of winning the IRC championship. Virginia defeated Grand Rapids 28-14. The entire football season was highlighted for Vir- ginia when the Devils” defeated their chief rival, Eveleth, 6-0. Pre - Homecoming activity culminated with a Homecoming As- sembly Friday afternoon. October 2. Mary Gianlorenzi. escorted by Jim Young, was chosen the 1959 Football Homecoming Queen. Guest speaker at the assembly was the VHS football coach, Mr. Beste. He commented on the Timberwolves' newfangled formations. After the assembly the traditional Homecoming parade was held. The parade featured floats by the Girls' Clubs, Tri-Hi, G.A.A., Hae- W, and Entre Nous. These floats were judged as they proceeded down Chestnut Street. The Hae-W float won first place. The parade also consisted of the high school band, the high - stepping majorettes and the Girls' Drill Team. The highlight of the parade was Queen Mary and her attendants, Peggy Tuominen, Sally Oakman, and Monika Lindqvist. Undaunted by rainy weather, a record crowd watched the Blue Devils trounce Ely in a decisive 33-19 game. At half-time Queen Mary and her attendants were escorted onto the field by members of the Lettermen's Club. Other half-time activities included showing of the Hae-W float. The majorettes performed and a fine exhibition was given by the Girls' Drill Team. Homecoming activities ended with a dance held at the Miners Memorial Building with the queen and her court as honored guests. Queen Mary waves a royal greeting as her reign begins. 10 Mogi. (yMc n4£uCcitio te Seacard The class of '60 sold $1,500 over their goal of $5,200, making a new record in the annual senior magazine drive of $6,700. Since the goal was surpassed, there was no need to extend the length of the drive, as has been done in previous years. This year prizes were given to the top salesmen in- stead of the usual steak dinner. Dan Bishop, first prize winner, was given 500 points for selling over $300 worth of magazines. Second prize. 300 points, was given to Leonard Richards, and third prize. 200 points, was given to Jack Matala. These points enabled them to receive merchandise or cash. Joe Angelo won the mystery student prize envelope which contained $50. Fred Lanari won 500 points through a drawing held at the end of the drive. The drive started on October 9 and continued until October 26. In spite of local strike conditions, the goal had been surmounted by $300 on Friday the twenty- third. A sign was posted in the front corridor to sell over $6.000 and really set a record. On Monday over $1,000 was turned in and the drive officially ended. Cheerleaders We can find our five cheerleaders at any game — out on the muddy football field, out on the basket- ball floor or out on the ice where they don their skates to lend their support to the hockey teams. V for victory is their cry, but V also stands for the vim. vigor and vitality that these girls must have to arouse even the dullest crowds. This year the cheerleaders were joined by Debbie Pauletti who assisted them with their cheers. Debbie is Cheryl's sister and plans to become a cheerleader just like Cheryl, who. along with Betty Bodovinitz. served through all four of her high school years. Yes. our cheerleaders who lead the spectators in countless pep yells deserve our recognition. So let s give three cheers for our cheerleaders! This year’s striking, talented, and hard-working majorettes have entertained us regularly at parades, tournaments, bands shows and sports events. Each outfit was highlighted by spotless white boots with long tas- sels swinging in time to such songs as Seventy-six Trombones. Raunchy. Gillette Look Sharp March. and Peter Gunn. GAA Lettermen's Club The 1959-60 school year brought a new advisor, Miss Anna Pechacelc. to join Miss Theresa Moroni in making sports popular and useful to girls in RHS. With the beginning of school, the ever-popular bowling began and the girls were seen trotting off to the Virginia Bowling Gar- dens for ten weeks. Basketball, volleyball, recreational sports, and softball were played after Christmas vacation until the end of school. The advisors also trained a large group of girls in marching for the drill team. They performed at various athletic events. Plans were made early in the new year for a potluck supper for the new initiates and for participation in an assembly during basketball season. The purpose of the Lettermen s Club is to pro- mote sportsmanship and fair play among the stu- dent body. Any boy who has earned a letter in one of the major sports offered in school may join this club. These sports include: football, basketball, swimming, hockey, track, golf, tennis and baseball. Some of the club’s activities this year were oper- ating refreshment concessions at football games, sponsoring the Lettermen’s Ball, and also rendering their services to help the G.A.A. and Pep Council make the Winter Festival’’ a great success. Tri Hi Under the supervision of Miss Moberg, Tri-Hi ended another year of high times. To start the year off. Tri-Hi sponsored a style show as a money-making project. The other clubs were invited, and invita- tions were sent to the girls' clubs in surrounding areas. They also sold stationery and Christmas candy. Tri-Hi's float came in second in the Homecoming parade. Along with the other girls’ clubs, they helped put on the Turn- about. During Christmas time they had a party and s nt gifts to needy children. In February, during basketball season, Tri-Hi girls put on a pep assembly. They put on the Senior Girls' Tea. and at the end of the year had a banquet. Enthusiasm was the word for the Pep Council this year. The pep assemblies proved to be a good example of this spirit. The whole student body took part in the cheers. Interest was the highest it has ever been, according to Betty Bodovinitz, president. The boys took a much greater interest in the meetings this year and the attendance was better. Betty was in charge of the 1959 Football Homecoming and Vice-president Cheryl Paulette was in charge of the Home- coming Pep Assembly and the coronation of Queen Mary Gian- lorenzi. Members of the Pep Council sold the Homecoming pins and assisted the Lettermen and G.A.A. in planning the Winter Festi- val that took the place of the Basketball Homecoming. Under the guidance of Miss Amy Beckstrom, the club has witnessed many successes. Make the Wolves Howl was the theme for Entre Nous' football homecoming float. A highlight of the annual Turnabout Dance was when Mike Blaeser, Entre Nous' candidate, was crowned king. In December the girls held their traditional Christ- mas party, entertaining four welfare children. Along with May and the end of the school year came Entre Nous' final social function: the farewell banquet for the seniors. The happy moments and the sad moments will linger in the memories of Entre Nous' graduation members for many years to come. FRONT ROW, FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: Gladys Johnson (sacratary-traasurar). Spaench Sp iench club had a very successful year under the guidance of Me. Turner and the leadership of Dan Bishop, president. The school directory was the big money-making project of the year. It listed all the students’ names and telephone numbers. The pep assembly, put on in the first semester, proved to be a lot of fun. A comical skit was pre- sented imitating the panel show, To Tell the Truth, and it was well received. Many new members were taken into the club at the initiation held in January. The new initiates' only requirement for joining was to be or to have been a student in one of the three foreign lan- guages: Spanish. French, and Latin. The spring banquet, attended by most of the members, climaxed a wonderful year. FRONT ROW. LEFT TO RIGHT: Cheryl Pauletti, Renee Vukelich. Anita Fayon (representative to Student Council). Under Miss Healy's guidance, this club has gained prominence not only in Roosevelt High, but all over the Range. In our storehouse of memories we glance through the pages of time. At Christmas, the new initiates were welcomed into the club. The three act production of the comedy-drama Melody Jones, was the main project given by the Thespians. By par- ticipation in assemblies, plays, and speech meets, those who earned 75 points were awarded the Thespian letter at the Honor Assembly. The election of new officers took place at the close of the year, and was followed by the annual banquet which, through its inter- mingling of joys and sorrows, highlighted the year. The mixed choir, composed of seniors, juniors and sophomores, has finished a very successful year under the direction of Mr. Eddie Burk. Besides the main choir there are a few small groups: the Ro-Hi Lows, composed of boys, and the Triple Trio and Sextet, both com- posed of girls. The traditional Christmas concert was a presentation of the Christmas Messiah by Handel on December 15. On the same pro- gram, the senior high school and Junior College Thespians presented Good King Wenceslaus. an old Bavarian folk play. Many Range towns participated in the annual vocal clinic held in Virginia during the second semester. Also on the agenda was the District 27's Spring Festival in Eveleth on March 30 and the annual Spring Concert on April 2. Choir WI? NT OWVLEFI ]° A'GHT; Russell Lundstrom. Herb Anderson. Vice- NOT National Honor Society Every year students having outstanding traits in scholarship, character, leadership, and service are initiated into the National Honor Society. To be eligible for membership, a student must rank in the upper-fourth of his class, and must possess the four essential qualities. No more than fifteen per cent of a class may be in National Honor Society. The new members are initiated every sprina. They are sworn in at a candlelight ceremony and after- ward. the initiates and their parents are honored at a reception in the Social Room. NHS does not function as regular clubs do. It is an honorary society which acknowledges exceptional students. Student Council put in a successful year under the supervision of Mr. Rukavina. Highlights of the year were sponsoring various assemblies and reporting on the problem of cheating. Major Robert Jones of Duluth was the guest speaker at the Armistice Day Assembly. Also, two talent assemblies were held during the year. In December, a list of fifteen methods used by cheaters was presented to all teachers in an attempt to curb cheating. In November. Georgene Koskela and Margaret Peterson, soph- omores. were chosen to represent Virginia at the St. Paul Voca- tional High School, a state-wide convention of all high school student councils. They came back with information that proved helpful in the Council's activities in later weeks. Student Counci FRONT ROW. There were twenty-four efficient students assisting Miss Wadd, our high school libra- rian. in the RHS library this year. The assistance that the students gave was on a voluntary basis and was not credited on their student records. The only reward that is gained is the feeling that you were able to help someone. Most of the stu- dents gave their services during their li- brary periods. These students helped with various jobs as checking in and out books, finding and recording magazines, and shelving books. Miss Wadd or one of her cheerful library helpers was always on hand to assist the students. Library Orchestra Let us give a round of applause to Roose- velt High School s orchestra, a small but efficient group of musicians. This organi- zation, under the leadership of Mr. Keith Davis, provided music for many of the more formal school functions such as commence- ments. plays, assemblies and concerts. The members diligently strived at their Tuesday evening rehearsals to achieve the high guality performance that can be wit- nessed whenever they play. With the combined efforts of the board and the orchestra, the school year was cli- maxed with the memorable spring music festival. This festival was looked forward to to by each musician as a yearly feat of achievement. LEFT SECTION. FRONT ROW. LEFT TO RIGHT: Mary Gianloranzi. Thaolynn Patarson. Loi McBrida. Future Teachers of America is for students going into the teaching profession and also for those who are seeking information about this field. In FTA many questions are answered and much valuable information is obtained. It also gives its members the chance to meet other students who are also interested in teaching. At each meeting teachers of different subjects and of different grade levels are present and speak to the students about their specific work. According to custom, each year the FTA Seniors go on a trip to UMD in the spring. A chance for FTA members to take over a class for one hour sometime during the year was also included in the plans for the year. FTA FNA The Future Nurses of America held their initiation November 10, in a candlelight ceremony. Twenty- eight girls were initiated and pledged themselves to faithfully promote FNA activities. FNA, under the guidance of Miss Smith, and Mrs. Mattsfield, school nurse, held a Christmas party for a group of welfare children and purchased Christ- mas presents for them. Later in the year the members made a field trip to a hospital and saw the nursing profession in action. Speakers were invited to each of the FNA night meetings held twice a month in the Social Room. Hae-W started the year with a bang by win- ning first place with its Homecoming float, theme of which was Tumble the Timbers. Hae-W kept busy throughout the year. In October the club held a Halloween masquerade party. Turnabout followed with Dave Viezbicke as their king candidate. Thanksgiving brought about Hae-W's usual tradition of presenting a food basket to some needy family. A Christmas party was held in the Social Room on December 16. The members sold ribbon and stationery to earn money. Miss Ellig. the club advisor, guided the girls during this wonderful and exciting year topped off by a banquet. Hae-W Red Cross The Red Cross is an international organiza- tion devoted to the welfare of neighbors and neighboring countries. A few of the activities they participated in this year were: taking part in the Junior Red Cross Enrollment Assembly, making favors for the Pioneers' Infirmary, sending out an inter- national correspondence album, and filling the Red Cross Chest. The Red Cross Enrollment Assembly was the kick-off for the yearly enrollment drive held from December 14-19. The money collected was used to buy material to fill the Red Cross Chest which was sent overseas. FRONT ROW, FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: Mary Vitzthum. Bob Wennen (rep. to Student Council), Priscilla Chase.
