The sound gaThered volume and developed inTo a Tull-Tledged snore. Joe was sound asleep. We glanced aT Mr. Pedagogue. He looked remoTe and as yeT unaware oT Joe s visiT inTo dreamland behind The shield oT an opened TexTbook. One ThoughT hif his pals in The class-Joe musT be saved. Proceeding on The Theory ThaT The besT way To Tigh+ Tire is by Tire They began an organized campaign oT noise. Ben dropped his pencils Jack rubbed his head wiTh a piece oT paper. Pages oT TexTbooks were Turned Turiously TeeT shuTTled a cold or Two developed. No avail. Above and beyond all oTher sounds rose ThaT unmisTakabIe snoring sound. Mr. Pedagogue rose walked sTraighT down The aisle pasT Joesdesk Turned came back. We waTched wiTh baTed breaTh. He reTurned To his desk picked up an enormous volume sTrode back and held iT ThreaTeningIy over The sleeper s head. Sudden- Iy he glanced aT The worried Taces abouT him grinned and TipToed quieTIy back To his desk. The Ten- sion snapped and ThaT grin spread ThroughouT The room. Wonder if Mr. Pedagogue ever realized how much ThaT biT oT horseplay endeared him To us ThaT day. He d earned The supreme commendaTion a Teacher can receive Trom a pupil- Say he s human . Remember wiTh whaT skepTicism we seT aside our TavoriTe comics and dime Thrillers and reluc- TanTIy Tollowed our English Teacher s lead inTo The Tield oT classics and LiTeraTure . We knew we d be bored-we hoped To skim IighTly over The surTace wiThouT disTurbing our comTorTabIe ThoughT paTTerns or airing The pages oT The old masTerpieces. Amazing buT Those dry pages began To live wiTh Torce color and beauTy as our ears became aTTuned To rnasTerTuI phrasing. We sTood beside Mark AnTony and spoke Those subTle words To our Roman counTrymen. We lived in a rough lumber camp wifh Thomas Hardy. We TelT The charm oT Poe's haunTing play on words. Suddenly we realized ThaT here in These dusTy volumes Iay an inTriguing world To which we'd been handed The key. Digging ouT ThaT old dime novel , we suddenly Tound iT awTully dull reading. ThaT canTankerous, conTradicTory hisTory Teacher is anoTher To remember. Scarcely a day passed ThaT he didn'T dispuTe some TacT we voIunTeered. He TIaTIy denied sTaTemenTs we had long Taken To be esTabIished TruThs and challenged us To prove him wrong. This was open war. Our sTaTe oT indiTTerence disappeared and we pledged ourselves To a duel oT TacTs. We spenT hours in The library searching Through reTerence books, encyclopedias and period- icals To Tind TacTs To subsTanTiaTe our argumenTs. We quesTioned, we probed, unused secTions oT our brains groaned, creaked and sTarTed To TuncTion againsT our will.
