A, . f ROOSEVELT HIGH SCHOOL VIHOINIA MINNESOTA .Q 9 in 1 .1 O t 1 K . 1 1 E 1 Zine 1950 Raluhn I Looking back through the past years we recall blurred memories of the good and bad episodes in our childhood days. We remember our first day of school. It was a solemn occasion as we trudged along holding our mothers' hands. Some cried. Others were happy. And still others were indifferent. Physically, of course, we all grew up. This can be measured with a ruler. But how can mental and emotional growth be measured? Now high school is to become another phase of the past. We enter the adult world the moment we receive our diplomas. Overnight we must act and think as adults. This world is one that must be faced with confidence. Education now, for most, will take a new form-experience. And again there will be differences. Success for each will be different. Failures painful for all. And the promise of hope the foundation to begin anew. It is to parents, teachers, friends, janitors- all the people who have stood at our side ready to help us over the rough spots the class of 1954 dedicates this annual. In erience ak s Its all It was a long. long. basketball season. As a team. the Blue Devils eould not seem to mateh the performanee reeord of their two predei-essors. For the first time in three years, the squad did not have experieneed veterans returning. Left from last year's regional runner-up team were only five lettermen. of Ilierse. only Ferrell and liarrio had any eonsideralile game experienee, For float-h Stovlx, this meant developing' a eomplete ness style of play. Yirginia's starting Eve eonsisted of eo-captains, Ken llarrio and Tom Fer- rell. lilen Bertelson, jim Nelson, and john Nigro. Offensive-ly, the team's front line averaged 6 feet 3 inehes with the over-all team height 6 feet 1 ineh. Alter- nates int-luiled: jerry Baland, Arland Averill. Dave Cline, Larry Jaksha, Dir-k johnson and Donald Wirtanen. ln their first eight starts, the squad won six. and dropped the remaining two lay a romhined total of three points. Here. as later. a movealile mid 1-ourt line nas an important far-tor in defeat. Evidently. Distriet 127 sr-outs dis:-overed a weakness in the Virginia team. for after the Grand Rapids vietory, the squad dropped its next four out of tive starts. 'lihen eame the District Play-Offs. and what had up to this time lieen a so-so learn suddenly loomed in the tournament as a giant killer.. As an unseeded en' trant N irginia staged a eomehaek against tivo teams ivhieh had managed to de- feat them during the regular season. iloaeh Stoek, revising the line-up. saw his team defeat 'liower-Soudan. 46 to -il. This same line-up took Aurora into f-amp 52 to 18. Both vietories reprea sented revenge for the Blue Devils. The ninth time 0111 lfhopp's efforts were oflicially recognized. his time in the event 1:02.5 which was 201.5 seconds lietter than the old state record set in 1944 Following this. Mike was invited to attend the national AAU meet at Chennev Washington. Students, teachers. husiness and professional men, and friends had 48 hours to raise the money to finance the trip for Mike and his coach Mr. l.. 1 Michels, At Chenney Mike was in competition with the best in the nation. Entered against him were five college swimmers and a Portland high school student Trailing for three laps Mike turned the pressure on his opponents to win the event in l:03.2 minutes. The victory was remarkable for another reason: the West Coast swimmers were using the Dolphin Kick , illegal in Minnesota, which provides the swimmer more power and speed in the water. Mike used the con ventional kick . Usually churning up the water behind Lhopp, was co-captain, Pete Johnson lliver. Don Erickson, consistently won a first or second in his event, until he was forced to drop from the team. Coach Michaels' usual lineup included: llon Erickson and Bill Cundy, 50 yard free style: Mike Chopp and Pete Johnson. 100 yard lmreast stroke: Jerry Bodovinitz and Ronnie McKinnon, 200 yard free style: lim Bursch and Jerry Ramponi, 100 yard back stroke: lay Williams and Bill Bergman, 100 yard free style: Don Erickson and Bill Johnson, diving: and Phil Sjoherg in the indi vidual medley. The occasion, the all-school play, HA Kiss for Cinderella , by James Matthew Barrie, directed by Miss Jean Healy. Taking the lead in Barrie's three-act fantasy was Marcia Johnson, portraying Miss Thing and Cinderella. Cast opposite her was ,lim Williams, who portrayed an English Bobby and Prince Hard-to-Please. Surprisingly enough, in spite of the recognized quality of the play, it has seldom been pro- duced by any organization because of the difficulty in casting the lead characters. The fantasy sequences written into the play by Barrie requires abrupt and skillful personality changes on the part of the leads if the complete plot of the play is to be put across to the audience. In Marcia Johnson and Jim Williams Miss Healy discovered that by nature they were accustomed to the sharp changes in character the plot of A Kiss for Cinderella called for. A matinee performance of the play was given before the toughest kind of audiences any group of actors can face-grade school age children. The 350 children, while at times noisy, did express appreciation for the fantasy humor Barrie wrote into the play. Probably the part most appealing to them was the pompous i'Lord Mayor of London . Supporting actors were: Jay Forsman, Dr, llodic: Dewey Rokala, King: Bill Johnson, Lord Mayor, Bob Curtiss, Lord Times. Choregraphy for the entire production was handled by Nancy Aysta. Miss Ann Moberg was responsible for scene construction and artistic effect of the play sets. The most colorful of the five scenes in the play was the dream sequence in which Prince Hard-to-Please eventually selected Cinderella for his bride. A surprise ending was provided by Jim Williams, who planted an unrehearsed kiss on Marcia's upturned face as the final curtain dropped. Her reaction-MI shoulda' hit him.
