M 'af A season record long to be remembered in the annals of Virginia basketball was established this year as the local squad won the district and regional championships and was runner-up in the state tournament. In coaching his first season here, Mr. Slcalbeclc was assisted in his fine work by John Uriclc. During the regular season, Virginia won twin victories over both Ely and Evelethg single victories over International Falls, Au- rora, Chisholm, Biwabilc, Hibbing, Mt. Iron, and Towerg and lost two games to Gilbert. In the first game of district play, Virginia disposed of Ely by a 20 to 14 score. Mt. Iron next fell before Vir- ginia in a contest ending at 29 to 15. By winning the champion- ship, Virginia upset the favored Gilbert team in a 26 to 19 tri- umph, which indeed was a sweet victory for local fans. Followed by throngs of rooters, Virginia displayed grit and fight in nosing out a 25 to 24 victory over Keewatin in the final moments of the regional opener. The next night Virginia defeated Carlton 26 to 17 to win the regional championship. Again Virginia fans fol- lowed their team, this time to Minneapolis. There they experi- enced another thriller in winning from Rochester 28 to 26 pggg after being almost hopelessly behind. Virginia won the . semi-finals by easily defeating Thief River Falls 37 to I 17. Although swamped in the state finals by Edison s ft , High in a 37 to 24 tussle, the Virginia team was deservant of all praise for establishing itself in second-place position. Enjoying one of the most successful seasons in recent years, Coach Boardman developed a swimming squad that was runner-up in the range, champion in the state, and second-place honor-holder in the northwest. David Robin- son and Leonard Thomas, co-captains, guided the team through a tough regular schedule to win nine of the eleven contests: Virginia 43, Eve- lerh 32, Virginia 42, Ely 30, Virginia 35, Hibbing 36, Virginia 48, Eveleth 27, Virginia 49, Ely 26, Virginia 47, Chisholm 28, Virginia 52, Gilbert 23, Virginia 53, Duluth Central 22, Virginia 31, Hib- bing 44, Virginia 59, Duluth Y. M. C. A. 23, and Duluth Cen- tral 20, and Virginia 47, Chisholm 28. Virginia upset the defend- ing Hibbing Champs to win the boys, state championship meet held at Virginia. The final results were: Virginia first with 53 points, Hibbing second with 50 points, Gilbert and Ely tied for third with 16 points each, Chisholm fourth with 10 points, and St. Paul Central fifth with 8 points. David Robinson won first and third places in the 220 and 100 yard free-style races, respec- tively. Seven other men placed in the different events. They include Williams, Froehlingsdorf, and Carlson, second places, Thomas, third place, R. Hill and McKenzie, fourth places, and,Mittan, fifth place. Froehlings- dorf, Williams, and Thomas broke the state rec- ord in winning the 150 yard medley relay, and Robinson, Thomas, McKenzie, and Freeman won the 200 yard free-style relay.
