Assisted by Archie Skalbeck and John Urick, Pepelnjak began a week before school started to mold a squad from eleven returning lettermen. Headed by Harold Paulsen, the Virginia squad gained a strong claim to a much disputed range football championship by virtue of winning five of its seven games. After losing the first game, 13 to 7, to a scrappy International Falls team, Vir- ginia came back with a surprise element to take Stan Kostka's Chisholm prodigees to the tune of 22 to 0. The next week, Pepelnjak' s boys traveled to Grand Rapids to win a 12 to 0 victory. The score, 26 to 6, proved to be Virginia's measure over a fighting Ely team. Virginia's gridders then continued their threshing by cutting down Eveleth, 13 to 0. On the following Friday night, Virginia, attended by a large delegation, took the measure of a strong Hibbing team on a snow-covered field by a 21 to 13 score. Playing under its new field lights, Virginia lost its final and homecoming game, 6 to 0, to Gil- bert, for the Blue and White's second defeat of the season. Paulsen, Hedenstad, and L. Thomas were placed on the mythical all-range first team. M 'af A season record long to be remembered in the annals of Virginia basketball was established this year as the local squad won the district and regional championships and was runner-up in the state tournament. In coaching his first season here, Mr. Slcalbeclc was assisted in his fine work by John Uriclc. During the regular season, Virginia won twin victories over both Ely and Evelethg single victories over International Falls, Au- rora, Chisholm, Biwabilc, Hibbing, Mt. Iron, and Towerg and lost two games to Gilbert. In the first game of district play, Virginia disposed of Ely by a 20 to 14 score. Mt. Iron next fell before Vir- ginia in a contest ending at 29 to 15. By winning the champion- ship, Virginia upset the favored Gilbert team in a 26 to 19 tri- umph, which indeed was a sweet victory for local fans. Followed by throngs of rooters, Virginia displayed grit and fight in nosing out a 25 to 24 victory over Keewatin in the final moments of the regional opener. The next night Virginia defeated Carlton 26 to 17 to win the regional championship. Again Virginia fans fol- lowed their team, this time to Minneapolis. There they experi- enced another thriller in winning from Rochester 28 to 26 pggg after being almost hopelessly behind. Virginia won the . semi-finals by easily defeating Thief River Falls 37 to I 17. Although swamped in the state finals by Edison s ft , High in a 37 to 24 tussle, the Virginia team was deservant of all praise for establishing itself in second-place position. Enjoying one of the most successful seasons in recent years, Coach Boardman developed a swimming squad that was runner-up in the range, champion in the state, and second-place honor-holder in the northwest. David Robin- son and Leonard Thomas, co-captains, guided the team through a tough regular schedule to win nine of the eleven contests: Virginia 43, Eve- lerh 32, Virginia 42, Ely 30, Virginia 35, Hibbing 36, Virginia 48, Eveleth 27, Virginia 49, Ely 26, Virginia 47, Chisholm 28, Virginia 52, Gilbert 23, Virginia 53, Duluth Central 22, Virginia 31, Hib- bing 44, Virginia 59, Duluth Y. M. C. A. 23, and Duluth Cen- tral 20, and Virginia 47, Chisholm 28. Virginia upset the defend- ing Hibbing Champs to win the boys, state championship meet held at Virginia. The final results were: Virginia first with 53 points, Hibbing second with 50 points, Gilbert and Ely tied for third with 16 points each, Chisholm fourth with 10 points, and St. Paul Central fifth with 8 points. David Robinson won first and third places in the 220 and 100 yard free-style races, respec- tively. Seven other men placed in the different events. They include Williams, Froehlingsdorf, and Carlson, second places, Thomas, third place, R. Hill and McKenzie, fourth places, and,Mittan, fifth place. Froehlings- dorf, Williams, and Thomas broke the state rec- ord in winning the 150 yard medley relay, and Robinson, Thomas, McKenzie, and Freeman won the 200 yard free-style relay. Flrmly establishing itself as the Invincible , the Virginia girls' swimming team has swum its way through another successful season. For the eighth consecutive year, the Virginia team has reigned in the state, both by suf- fering no defeats in dual competition and by winning the state meet. Under the captaincy of Patsy Bailey, the team showed its capability by maintaining an average of 45 points per meet throughout the season. Although comparatively weak in the baclcstroke field this season, the mermaids had a goodly number of consistent point-getters in every other event. Climaxing the season's aquatic schedule, Virginia swept through the state swimming meet held at Biwabilc, to emerge 10 points ahead of its nearest competitors, the Biwabilc tanlcsters. In each of the free-style events, Virginia entered four girls. This entire group placed in the preliminaries in the relay swim, the 50 yard free-style and the 100 yard free-style swims, and, in the fin- als, copped the relay trophy and three places in each of the other two events. Virginia,s most promising mermaid, Doris Novotny, an eighth grader, won first in the 50 yard breast-stroke. The total number of points amassed by the locals in the state A d k, Cudmore, uha, Maltxon, Murphy Kline, Brandt, P ilipx, Iohnmn, Bergxtro 31 WWW MZMWJMAZM Crisp, snappy weather greeted twenty-two girls as they stood tense before the referee's shrill whistle started the ball into action. Exhausted athletes surged into the fieldhouse with bruised shins, but with radi- ant faces. The star fullback dashed down the field to block a well-aimed pass, only to be cruelly stopped by a heart-breaking plunge into a slippery mud pud- dle. Fifty girls answered Manager McKenzie's call for soccer enthusiasts. Peggy Eaton, Margaret Haw- kinson, Elva Mae Brandt, jane Phillips, Elaine Eng- man, and Ruth Slade captained the six teams which battled throughout the season. Peggy Eaton's 12th grade team emerged the victors. Thirty-one girls, under the leadership of Manager Betty Waananen, received their points after a short season of archery art, which was terminated by Old Man Winter, who had definite ideas about closing the season before the championship tournament was played. A yellow-trimmed hockey stick struck a new white ball with apparent unconcern. Surprised gasps floated across the athletic field when a resounding crack announced that another stick had split. Re- sponding to field hockey Manager Jaksha's call were fifty-four enthusiasts. Four teams, captained by Mar- cella Ring, Mildred Davidson, Albina Jaksha, and Rose Pecarina, fought through a successful season, which resulted in a tie for the championship between Marcella Ring's and Albina Jaksha's teams. To suffer the clouts of pendulum arms or to desert it all by dis- charging emphatic shrieksv scuttled through the missing link's head at the Hi-Y initiation. Pigskin Commander Harold Paul- sen signs Marie and Betty Lou,s sports memo books. It is a colorful John Hancock with red the predomi- nating color, for Babe is blushing and Pee-Wee's hair is aglowing. Brawny athletes are forced to as- sault the delicate lassies' autograph books with scratching signatures. Back to the farm. Hi-Y members lose their usual sophisticated and ur- banified expressions and gaze with awe upon the feathery physique and poise of Cype Pearsall's Plymouth at their fall initiation. Topping New Orleans' Mardi Gras was the G.A.A. Carnival, puff- ing with harum-scarum booths, lea- ther-lunged sporties shouting the odds, flippy jiggling, flashes of the Rogues' Gallery of infancy, and bur- lesquing Time Marches Back- wards . Bouncing, brisking, hoboes swung hopping, hot-footing hoboesses to and fro to the raging, rangey rhy- thms of Tiny Specht's orchestra at the Bums' social hour. Lois smiles at a sparkling snap of classroom caprice and a stage-struck Thespian as she peeks at a Star of the North yearbook. 60 IW sBuM'5 PAHAMJF GL gfomecoming glound-Cup Even the toppling garbage cans of Hallowe'en rolled aside in Qcto- ber to make room for the Battle of the Fair Sex, testing whether this girl or that girl could endure and reign as Queen of the Reunion in Virginia. The Big Parade inched its way to the field with Eaton's dray as one of the floats. The lambs to see the slaughter were our champion swim- ming team, which invariably brings home the mutton. Ol Qbramatic gnterlude Moot point: Music is the speech of angels. Development: The girls' glee club has acquired the speech. Snake in the grass: The glee club- bers are not angels. Ergo: Word- lings gone astray. Notebooks are flipped through as inky-smelling exams leer balefully. Conscience-pricks reassure one of the living nightmare, the usix-weelcsn. Not so for drama students, how- ever, exams call for just play act- ing. A senile spinsterss lofty morals hoisted her sparse eyebrows to the first wrinkle at the puckish antics of her fellow-mime until his wiles vamped her into the arms of Mor- pheus. Unbesmirched honor gathers up celibacy, bird cage, and starched dignity. Thus, with charms safe, she directs withered glances at the kit- tenish advances of plus-foured, by- Joveing, waggish Lynch. Drama spins the roulette wheel at Monte Carlo. Delineators of suave metropolitan gamblers stoop to toss cards for the longest name. Barto- letti or Froehlingsdorf?
