As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly clearly and listen to others even the dull ignorant they too have their story. - to Avoid loud aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain bitter; for always there will be greater lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. 3 Keep interested in your own career, however humble: it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and every where life is full of heroism. 4 Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love: for in the face of all aridity disenchantment, it is perennial as the grass Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. 6 You are a child of the Universe, no less than the trees the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is dear to you, no doubt the Universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your tabors aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. 8 With all its sham, drudgery broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Football 58 Although the J.V. team did not win a great number of games, they did show some great invididual efforts. 'I'hey didnât lose all their games, the other team just scored more points than the Roughriders did. Some fine-individual efforts were shown by Bob Bonnot, Joe Dclk, Ken Purnell, Jim McDonald, Dan Bilyeu, Steve Manser and Phil Erceg, and the Roughrider fans will be seeing plenty of action out of these men next year. Darrell Humphrey, Rick Bradley, Dwight Knapp, show promise for the future. Mr. Hardin, the coach, did as much as he could to give the team the incentive they needed to keep trying. This was his first year at Roosevelt and with the players. He is looking forward to next year because the majority of the players on next yearâs team will be experienced and will have a pretty good idea of what will be expected of them. With the prospect of most of the freshman football team moving up to Junior Varsity. Rooseveltâs Junior Varsity team could present the rest of the Roosevelt student body with a pretty successful season. J.V. With their team work and the understanding of Mr. Hush. Eric Christiansen and I om Christiansenâs discipline, they came out ahead. In the first game with Wilson. Roosevelt proved its offense well by keeping their ball under control for most of the game. Rooseveltâs âAâ team ended up with a score of 24 - Wilson 0. B team 44 - Wilson 0. In the game with Washington, Roosevelt lost with 40 seconds remaining when Washington received a touchdown. The score, Roosevelt 0 - Washington 8. All in all the defense was great too. With their team work and discipline the frosh gridmen are a winning team for Roosevelt in the future. Mr. Hush patiently waits for Roosevelt to score. Hottom of f Jim Deane. Art Dewey. John Heaverlo. Swimming The 1971 swimming season ended with the girls finishing 3-3, defeating Washington, Jefferson, and Monroe, while the boys lost all their meets. This record is due, in part, to the lack of adequate practice facilities and the lack of a large number of participants. In spite of this, the team always finished, worked hard and developed a team as well as an individual sense of competition for personal excellence. Becky and Bobbi Poulin represented RHS at the city and then the state meet. Connie Buckles and Mark Loughccd received the Roosevelt Inspirational trophies. Several varsity and J-V letters were awarded this year. Six Swimmers and hopefully new talent will be found among the new Freshmen. Well done team. Rooseveltâs 1971-72 basketball team ran up the best record for a Roosevelt basketball team since the 1959-60 season as it posted a 13-9 won and loss record. The team was composed of ten seniors and one sophomore. 'I'he team was paced in scoring by Bruce Mineau and Brian Smith. Bruce averaged over 20 points a game and Brian averaged 18 points a game. These two players gave Roosevelt its best one-two scoring punch in its history. All of the players made valuable contributions at some time during the season. Other starters were Robby Gross, Rickie Malone, and David Oten. Lettcrmen from the previous year were Craig Montag and John Brune. Craig and John started some games during the season. Other members of the team were Bryan Reeves. Mike Lordos, 'Tom Schmitt, and Ron Hackenburg. The team got off to a gi od start by winning its first five games. After, the competition became very tough because the Portland Interscholastic League had some very good teams this year. Despite a strong league. Roosevelt was able to hold its own at times against any of the teams. JV. Basketball This yearâs J.V. Basketball Team was composed of 5 juniors. 3 sophomores, and 5 freshmen. Due to the fact that we were such a young team, we had a lot of basketball to learn. The team lost its first twelve games of the season. The guys got it together the second half of the season, however, and played some outstanding defense and became one of the better J.V. teams in the city. The freshmen on the team gained a lot of valuable experience playing with the J.V.s, and this experience will be of great value to them in the coming years. This team was characterized by good spirit and desire, proven by the fact that after being down 12 losses in a row. they came back to be very respectable the second half of the season. âTip it to a Rough Rider! 68 â Row I: Jack Marion, Gary Harshaw, Bruce Smith, Neal Lordos, Wade Nelson. The team has done a good job on the floor and some individuals have been consistent strong ball players. With the core of freshman playing J.V. ballâwe will see some fine basketball out of this group as seniors. The team along with spirit and the will to play ball had great sportsmanship, in their lost games. 70 Front row left to right: Coach DcSylvia, Gary Brown, Ben Langford, 'Fom Johnson, Marshall Reed, Jimmy Dean, Ben Howard, 2nd row: Tony Kelly, Alvin Smith, Leonard Buel, John Jones, Stan Manser, Stan Asonavic, David Pcnwcll. Not pictured: Pat Ryan. Wally Mello, Mark I ews, Daryll Humphrey, Bob Bonnet. This year was a building year for the Varsity Wrestling Team. We had a number of wrestlers who did very well and gained that necessary experience needed to be a real city contender next year. We started with 7 sophomores. 5 juniors, and 1 senior on the team, so inexperience and youth summed up our win-loss record. We had two all-city wrestlers, Mike Martinez, who was runner-up, and Wally Mello who placed 3rd. We feel that these two fellows, along with Pat Ryan. Steve Smith. David Leland, Bob Barron. Bob B o n net, Darryl Humphrey, and Chuck Horton should lead our team to one of the best seasons Roosevelt has seen in many years. We also have a number of outstanding freshmen who will fill in any weaknesses we might have. 71 98 lbs., David Lcland - a much improved wrestler this year by beating some very tough opponents. He will be a strong varsity contender next yar. 106 lbs., Mike Martinez - a main stay on the varsity team this year. He was a runner-up in the city tournament and did a fine job representing Roosevelt at the state tournament. 130 lbs., Bob Bonnot - as a first year junior did a remarkable job winning bis first two matches in the city tournament, a feat seldom achieved by a first year wrestler. 136 lbs.. Bob Barron ⢠a person who is a real worker and shows promise for the future. Bob came a long way this year, and will be a good leader next year. 11 5 lbs.. Steve Forncrook - the only freshman to fill a varsity slot permanently. Steve will be a real asset to our team next year. He has the ability to be a champion. 123 lbs.. Wally Mello - has the ability and attitude to be a state champion. This year, he had the opportunity to wrestle against the South African and Japanese all-stars. 136 lbs., Scott Wolfe - showed real desire while picking up valuable experience. Scott should be a real contender for a varsity slot next year. 141 lbs.. Pat Ryan - a team leader this year and won against some very tough opponents. He should have a great deal of success next year. 148 lbs., Gordon Locke - the only senior on our team was a silent leader, showing great determination and internal fortitude. 1 56 lbs., Steve Smith - a junior with a lot of potential, and should be a city contender next year. He has a great desire to win. 156 lbs., Alan Stewart - his attitude makes up for his lack of experience. Alan is a credit to any team. 167 lbs., Charles Horton - He has a tremendous desire and is looking for a city championship and a place in state next year. Charles has the tools to do the job. 177 lbs., Darrell Humphrey -gained valuable experience on varsity this year. Filling in at upper weights, he should have a good season next year. Heavy Weight - Mark Tews -Mark's injuries and inexperience hampered him this year. He has the potential to do very well next year. He should be a strong junior for us. 73 J.V. Wrestling 'Phis year was a building year for the Roosevelt J.V. Wrestling Team. The numbers werenât great but the team attitude more than made up for this. The team gained the experience they needed to fill some varsity spots next year. Scott Wolfe, Steve Manser, and Allan Stewart were 3 individuals who show promise for the future-Ken Jones also did a commendable job as a first year senior. We arc proud of these and the rest of the freshmen who made our J.V. team go. Front Row: Scott Wolfe, Mike Martinez. David Poland, Alan Stewart. Second Row: Ken Jones, Darrel Humphrey, Steve Manser. This yearâs freshman team was exceptional. Their attitude, desire, and ability were great. They suffered from injuries but always bounced bade tough. Several individuals sported fantastic win loss records. Namely, Steve Conn, David Smith. Jimmy Espinoza, Paul Sullivan. John Radio, Steve Forncrook, Ron Griff, Steve Weir, and Danny Espinoza. Many of these, along with others from the freshman team will fill varsity slots next year. This group has the potential to bring a city-championship home to Roosevelt. You will see much of them in the future. Dean Haggar, David Kight. Darrell Mapclthorp, Steve Peterson, and Joe Kwann were also very strong competitors for us. The whole team proved that Roosevelt can have a winning wrestling team. Frosh Wrestling Rack row, left to right: S. Weir. S. Forncrook. S. Conn, D. Espinoza, P. Sullivan. R. Griff. Front row, J. Among the men gymnasts we have three returning lettermen from last years team. These gymnasts include senior Jim Buck who competes on the High Bar, Parallel Bar, and Still Rings. Junior 'Pom Hascall competes in all six mensâ events. Sophomore Doug Patterson is Roosevelts second all around gymnast and shows a great deal of potential. Our new gymnasts have really given the team a tremendous lift. These include Terry Kelsey a senior who has the ability and desire to compete in just about all forms of mensâ competition. Another senior with that extra talent is Steve Sutton who performs on the Horizontal Bar. Joel Hodges rounds off our seniors. Joel, an extremely strong individual competes on the Still Rings. The rest of our squad is made up of Freshmen who are progressing very nicely. front row from Left to Right: Cireg Hauson, Mark Loucks, Mike Karsterdike, Mike Meany, Mark Snook. The IM.L. had over 18 rained-out dates. This is, as far as can be remembered, the worst season in the last 20 years, plus the shortened tax year. The roughridgers finished second in league play to Wilson with a league record of 10 wins and 5 losses and a 15 and 5 over all record. This fine record was also highlighted by one of the best hitting teams Roosevelt has had in a long time. Teddies team average was 302. This included two 300 hitters, Mike Lordos 310, and David Beck 316 and three 400 hitters Craig Montag 463. and Alan Hoffman 426 and Bruce Mineau 419. The last three will represent Roosevelt in the IM.L. all star game. Credit for such a fine season goes to a lot of hard work by players and coach in the summer when the team practices each morning and plays games at night. 78 Front row from Left to Right: Dirk Richards, Al Hoffman. This year's Freshmen Baseball team did very well in their season, as they had a 6-1 win-loss record. Coached by Mr. Stan Bozich, the boys were taught discipline and leadership. On the team this year, there were some pretty good batting averages. The top five were: Bruce Jones, Joe Calhoun, Dave Smith. Steve Allan, and Benny Howard. The teamâs average was about 300. The closest game played was against Jackson, where at the end of 6Vi innings Roosevelt was behind, 3-0. The Jackson pitcher then got nervous and Roosevelt scored 3 runs, with bases loaded and only one out. John Hcaverlo went up to bat and was walked to bring in the winning score for Roosevelt. Discipline and attitude were characteristic of this years program. Due to lack of weight men the dual meet schedule was winless with the running events showing good strength. Three school records were either broken or tied. John Bilyeu's 880 record of 2:00.5; the mile relay of Oscar Casey, Les Pope, Robert Barron; John Bilyeu ran 3:28.1 in City Meet; with a 440 relay tying the school record in 43.9. When the season came to an end statistics proved Roosevelts girls were on the top-winning all eight games. J.V. and Freshmen tennis players were stymied by Portlandâs .typical rains and by the shortened school year. Ten freshmen turned out for tennis this year. We lost close matches to Madison, Lincoln and Benson. The team had one senior, Ron Hackenberg. Ron and Bud Fowler alternated as our best golfer. Bud as a sophomore was our most consistent winner. Jim Lemaick, number three was our most promising, new member of the team. He is a junior. Bob Downey, a junior, played 5 and 6 position, and scored wins during the first of the season. Dean Hager who alternated for 5 and 6 with Bob, won his letter and is only a freshman on the team. Our number four man for part of the season, Steve Smith, quit for a job. His place, part time was taken by Steve Purcell, who really went out for track but wanted to help out and he did, winning his first match and dropping two. Students self-scheduled their classes and chose their teachers; study halls were discontinued; a fifteen-minute daily morning break as well as a daily hour lunch period came to be and a greater variety of courses were offered. Our new Career F.ducation shop opened; students began the construction of a house and our reading program received local, state and national acclaim. And so another year has elapsed in the life of the school with âA Heritage of Prideâ. We are planning for our Golden Anniversary during the 1972-73 year. We all enjoy our successes and learn from failures. We wish all of our seniors a successful future and we look forward to our fiftieth year with out returning students. 204 Mr. Wienecke Principal W r . Hartvra MfS Media Centers Mrs. Roscnau M rs. He came to Portland, Oregon in 1943. In 1945 he was the first person of his race to be hired to teach in the city of Portland. After having taught in one of the elementary schools for seven years Mr. Ford came to Roosevelt in 1952 and through many years of hard, dedicated work among the youth of our country, he was recognized for this, and chosen teacher of the year (1970-1971), a great honor for a great guy. Mr. Livcsay first came to Roosevelt in 1945 as a Social Studies teacher. He has also taught at Madison, Marshall, and at a high school in Idaho. Mr. Livcsay has. taught almost all high school subjects. He also has coached basketball, track, and baseball. His favorite subject is Social Studies, and his favorite sport is baseball, and his favorite school is Roosevelt. Mr. Livcsay said he likes to see and hear of the success of his exstudents. or of his students now. Itâs my greatest reward in teaching. Mr. Livcsay After twenty-seven years of teaching at Roosevelt Mrs. Robinson is retiring. Before coming to Portland, Mrs. Robinson taught all levels of English and History. Home Economics. Dramatics and Business Education in Lane and Wallowa Counties. At Roosevelt she has taught History, Typing. Bookkeeping and Office Practice (B.O.P.). She organized the latter class twenty-five years ago. and has been its only instructor. In fact she is proud to say that many of her students are daughters of former students that she has had the privilege of teaching here at Roosevelt. We are all sorry to see such a fine teacher leave us, but we would like to wish Mrs. Robinson all the luck in the future. Mrs. Robinson 218 Molly Burgct, Student Teacher.
