To Mrs. Mildred Boyington, on behalf of the 1964 Ranger Staff, we dedicate this book. 8 KATHE SONDERMAN Bottrop, Germany 'I'o my friends. It is hard to believe that my time in America is almost over, a year I had been looking forward to for so long and I know I shall never forget it. I remember vividly the first days when I kept asking you Can you tell me please where.. Yes, in the beginning, Roosevelt seemed to be very large and confusing but there was always someone who liked to help me. I’ll show my friends in Germany my Pep uniforms and tell them about games, rally and school spirit. When I think back to my first football game, I have to laugh at myself. I was so confused by the yelling and the game that I wasn’t sure who had won. I hope that many of you will have the opportunity to visit Europe and that your impression of the Europeans will be as good as mine is of Americans. I believe that everyone of us can help to take a step away from war by getting to know other peoples, live with them, understand them, and respect them. Now I would like to wish Teddy High , its principals, faculty and students all the best for the coming years. I know I am not able to thank you but I want to tell you this, you have given me the most wonderful experience of my life. I’ll never forget you. With best wishes. Kathe Sonderman A.F.S. 1963-1964 from Germany E YirtTi ■ . sJi ncipal Don W. James The Region III Student Council Association is addressed by Mr. James. Although Mr. James is a member of the Superintendents' Curriculum Advisory Council, Portland Schools Vocational Education Committee, Portland Schools Communications Committee, the Committee for Cooperation between School District No. 1 and Portland State College, and Portland Schools' High School Building Committee, he continues to devote his time to Roosevelt as a well informed and well liked principal. Mr. James accompanies Spring Student Council representatives to the Region III meeting in Tillamook. As principal of Roosevelt and a member of many organizations, Don James is an Educational Leader in our District, Region, and State. As president of the Portland High School Principals' Association, Chairman of the Curriculuc Commission of the Oregon Association of Secondary School Principals, and a member of Oregon Association of Secondary School Principals’ Executive Committee, Mr. James is kept busy with a number of responsibilities. He is Chairman of the Region III Student Council Association and a member of the Oregon Association of Student Councils' Advisory Committee as well. Miss Leola Craig Miss Craig, administrative vice principal, supervises all girls functions. She is also in charge of Rally, Pep squad, the Junior Class, cap and gown committees, supervising the prom, ticket and student body card sales, and school finances. Vice Principals 14 Mr. Jack McLeod As classroom visitation supervisor, Mr. McLeod spends much of his time touring classes and compiling reports on the teachers. Freshman Class activities, library services, bookroom rentals, A.V.A., class programs, and schedules are also under his supervision. Mr. George Hysmith Administrative vice principal in charge of discipline of the boys at Roosevelt is Mr. Hysmith s main job. He is also in charge of all Sophomore Class activities. Supervising Baccalaureate seating, processional, recession, anti parroting assemblies also fall under his jurisdiction. Counsellors Counselors give much of their time to help students map our the courses they will rake during their years in high school. Counselors are always on hand to give needed advice on any matter and to help students to choose subjects which they, as individuals, will get the most benefit and enjoyment from. The guidance students receive from their counselors help them to develop more fully during their high school years. Freshmen English is combined with the social studies class. Sophomore English includes drama, poetry and short stories while Juniors also study drama, poetry and the American novel. Seniors study World literature or English literature depending on whether or nor they are college bound. John Hatpin finds that consecration and study are the first steps in acquiring good grades. Team teaching was experimented with in past years and has been quite successful. Team teaching allows each teacher more time to prepare lessons. These lessons are more specialized and provide more variety for students. It is in the combined class that the freshmen arc introduced to the rigors of high school. Here is where they get their start. Carl Schwab English, Social Studies Earl Youncc English, Social Studies Ann Moyes Lang. This is the basic question the faculty and students of the Science department attempt to answer. The unraveling of man's questions about man and his surroundings is a never ending quest. The students are able to travel from the wonderous spaces of the universe to the magical world of the microscope. Attentive pupils watch as Mrs. Duncan explains a geometry problem. Mathematics 4.0iUjs on A game to the intellectual, a perplexing problem to the student, a tool to the engineer, an indispensible aid to the physicist, and an evil to be avoided in the minds of the uninitiated — such are the concepts of mathematics. Truthfully can it be said that future mathematicians, as well as future citizens, get a good send off from the Roosevelt mathematics department. Mr. Cheshire stresses a point in his World History Class. The students listen attentively; they know they will have to use this information — on an exam. Social Studies There is a four year sequence course in Social Studies beginning with a world civilization course on the freshmen level and climaxed with an American problems class in the senior year. Certainly no-one can deny that to grasp the world problems that face us today one must have a firm grip on the happenings of the past. With this in mind, the teachers of the Social Studies department strive to help the students not only understand the past but also prepare for the future. Allen Epp Social Studies Charles Harris Social Studies Budd Gronquist Social Studies Ralph Bergstrom Social Studies 21 Edgar Smith French Judith Newell German JoAnn Olsen Spanish Foreign Languages Students have the opportunity to learn to read, write and speak three languages. In the French, German and Spanish classes the students also study the geography, history and culture of the country involved. Aides used in teaching arc records, earphones and movies. These help the students learn the subject matter faster and make the classes much more interesting. Mr. Smith's students, Lynda Powers, Carolyn Currie, Nancy Killz and Patti Shanks, try out their creative talents by-presenting a skit... done in French. Special Education The special education department is designed to give help to students who have trouble in learning so that they may do their school work in a group where they will succeed and be happy. General art offers drawing, painting, and elements of designing. Commercial art students study lettering, poster design and layouts. Metal art, preferred by the boys, teaches them to apply designs to metal and develop skills in the use of tools. There arc also courses in art photography and art ceramics. Understanding and enjoyment of all art forms is a goal shared by all members of this department. Music Miss Eubanks and Jim Branun mold a face mask on a willing (?) subject. Business For students going into business, a number of courses are offered. There arc semester courses in typing, business law, record keeping and briefhand. These are all offered for personal use. These courses, along with general business, shorthand, bookkeeping and office practice are offered for a full year. Many students get valuable experience from the Distributive Education Program. Home Economics The skills acquired from our homemaking courses have proven to be valuable in home and social life. In the four year course offered to students, instruction is given in sewing, cooking, home management, grooming, child care, family relations and nursing. There were two experimental courses offered to seniors this year. The first semester was for students not planning on going on to college, and is concerned with home management, buying problems, and relationships with other people. The second semester was designed for the college bound student. Discussed were wardrobe plans and problems which might come up in college. This organization is comprised of about 65 Oregon schools and meets three times a school year. Five members of the student council attended these meetings to discuss common school problems. (Claudia Johnson was elected Region 3 treasurer). Region III sponsored a dance here at school and shared sponsorship of another one with our own student council to raise money for the student fund. Among the other projects undertaken by the council was a March of Dimes Campaign, one of the most successful in the school's history. They hope that this will help prepare the incoming freshmen for their four years here. This council also arranged the visit of Governor Hatfield to our school. When he arrived he was met by Greg White and Paul Crogan and then greeted by the rest of the council. The council also proposed a clean up week to help give our school a Spring Cleaning. These activities were a part of an over all plan to make the Student Council a stronger and more helpful organization in school. Annual Staff Class section editors Marsha Hr stad, Pam Swartz, and SoreiAi Cook crop the pictures to a uniform size. Hard work and little play, could be the rheme of the yearbook staff this year. They started the school year eagerly with the challenge they knew was before them, but as the weeks rolled by they realized their job was nor going to be easy. Terms such as: negatives, layouts, galley proofs, white space, copy, repros, glossies, dummy, bleeds and flush became familiar words as each student began their section. A group decision was made on the rheme and cover scheme but the rest of the work was done individually for each student had his or her own section to prepare. Page by page layouts had to be organized for the dummy book and pictures ordered. Staff photographers cover all school events, develop and print the vast number of pictures required by the staff. W'hen the prints have been selected by the section editor, they are cropped, or cut to proper size and pasted up on graph paper. Copy and captions for each picture must then be written and sent to the printers. A galley proof is made and proofread. It is then the job of the printer to photograph and make an aluminum plate of each page. Reproductions of each page arc made off of the plate. Many headaches and heartaches are suffered by each staff member but the reward comes when the book is distributed to the Student Body and those happy and approving words are heard by all. Chief photographer Art Chandler checks on negatives. Not pictured are photographers John Tooley and David Drenkbahn. Editors Betty Chemung tnJ Brenda Holmes list ideas for the coming edition. On deadline day copy is proofread for mistakes and sent to the printers. When the copy comes back the following week, the page editors paste up their pages on dummy sheets. The finished papers come back from the printers on Wednesday morning, and is distributed to the classrooms third period.
